Kenan Christon, San Diego State, Player News

When he began workouts at San Diego State last week, Kenan Christon did not do so with the expectation that he would instantly be regarded as SDSU's No. 1 running back. "I think you should earn the spot you want," said Christon, who transferred to SDSU last month after three years at USC. "Nothing should be given." Christon is confident, however, that he will prove himself to be the Aztecs' top running back - as well as a potential return man - by the time the season opens on Sept. 3. "That's always the expectation," he said of being a starter. "If that happens, great. If not, then I'll go back to the drawing board and keep working."

Christon possesses the confidence - what some call athletic arrogance - that comes with success and faith in his abilities. Asked what he brings to the table, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Christon said, "My speed is unmatched, for sure. Not to say that anyone else on the team isn't fast or powerful, but I just think I'm a great addition to the team..."I'm a very versatile back. If you need me to carry the ball 25 times, I can do that. If you need me to catch the ball 25 times, I can do that. Whatever it is, I can do it." - San Diego Union Tribune

San Diego State announced Tuesday running back Kenan Christon has joined the Aztecs' football program. Christon's transfer from USC was reported last week in the Union-Tribune. It became official when his grant-in-aid paperwork was received and processed by the university. Christon, a Madison High graduate who also was a sprinter on the USC men's track team, rushed 78 times for 443 yards and two touchdowns (5.5 yards/carry) and added 13 receptions for 126 and three TDs over the 2019-20 seasons. Christon played in USC's 2021 season opener against San Jose State, but was suspended by the school and missed the remainder of the season for an altercation with another USC student. Christon entered the NCAA transfer portal in mid-December.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Christon, who was not made available for comment, will be listed as a junior on the SDSU roster, although he could potentially have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Running back is perhaps the deepest position on the SDSU roster with the addition of Christon. The Aztecs have not yet identified the back who will get the most carries following the departure of lead back Greg Bell, who exhausted his eligibility following the 2021 season. Super seniors Chance Bell, who carried 72 times for 341 yards and four touchdowns last season, and Jordan Byrd, who had 37 carries for 246 and three TDs, are the most experienced returners. They came out of spring camp listed as co-starters at the position. - San Diego Union Tribune

Former Madison High running back Kenan Christon is expected to transfer from USC to SDSU, according to multiple sources. Christon did not immediately respond to messages requesting a comment. Christon, a 5-foot-10, 185-pounder with sprinter's speed, adds even more depth to perhaps the deepest position on the roster. The Los Angeles Times reported last year that Christon was suspended following an altercation with another USC student. USC officials said Christon had seven violations of the student code of conduct, and he was suspended from campus and university activities until December 14, 2022 (the suspension later was shortened to May 12). - San Diego Union-Tribune

USC running back Kenan Christon's university suspension following a September altercation with a fellow student has been reduced on appeal, activist Najee Ali confirmed on Tuesday. Christon will now be allowed to return to campus on May 12 and resume his academic career at that time. His original suspension would have kept him away from campus until December of 2022. The junior running back has been removed from team activities for both football and track since the September altercation as the university went about its investigation and judicial process. He missed the entire 2021 football season following the incident. Though it remains unclear if or when Christon will rejoin the football team, Tuesday's decision keeps open the possibility that he could play for USC in 2022. Later Tuesday night, Yahoo! Sports reported that Christon had entered his name into the transfer portal, though he could still choose to remove his name and return to USC if given the opportunity to play again. - Orange County Register

USC wants to move away from the running back-by-committee approach it's used the last three seasons. The goal is for one main back and a change-of-pace option to take on the lion's share of carries. With just two jobs on the line, that makes running back the most crowded competition at USC. Texas transfer Keaontay Ingram was the best back throughout the spring, breaking tackles and bursting through holes. If he's the physical work horse (which is still TBD until after fall camp), how does USC complement him? Vavae Malepeai plays with a similar style to Ingram, but has been USC's starting running back the last two seasons when healthy. Stephen Carr is more of a contrast with Ingram, with speed being his primary weapon. Kenan Christon is the most dynamic option, with his combination of speed and ability to make plays in the passing game, but he missed spring competing with the USC track and field team and faces an uphill battle. - Orange County Register

Kenan Christon had made just three total carries this season when he took a third-quarter handoff Saturday, broke through to the second level and was off to the races. The sophomore speedster sprinted 47 yards before he was finally caught - long enough to remind everyone of the breakaway speed he used to burst onto the scene last season. "He's been waiting for that moment, to have that chance to make that big play," Helton said. "As soon as he took off, I thought, oh gosh, I thought he was gone." - Los Angeles Times

Kenan Christon only got in the game because the first three tailbacks on Southern California's depth chart were all hurt and the fourth-stringer had just fumbled. With the eye-popping speed that made him California's 100-meter high school champion last May, the freshman scored two blazing touchdowns to clinch a blowout win over Arizona. Although the Trojans are barely outrunning their injury woes, they've still got talent that can burn. They're also still leading the Pac-12 South after a 41-14 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday night.

Christon rushed for 88 of his 103 yards in the fourth quarter of an electrifying debut for the Trojans (4-3, 3-1 Pac-12). The San Diego native flew past the Arizona secondary on a 55-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter, and he added a 30-yard TD sprint down the middle less than five minutes later. "There's a lot of great football players on this team, so it's hard to judge his speed," USC coach Clay Helton said. "But it's nice to have that feeling and know that when the play breaks, if he's even, he's leavin'." Kedon Slovis threw touchdown passes to Michael Pittman Jr. and Tyler Vaughns as USC remained unbeaten at the Coliseum this season and atop the division alongside Utah, which lost to USC last month. - USC/AP College Football
