On Wednesday, Iowa football added one more piece to its team during the early NCAA transfer window; and it's at a position of need. Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson announced his decision to transfer to the Hawkeyes over Oklahoma. He will graduate this spring and join Iowa in the summer as a graduate transfer. He's regarded as a four-star transfer portal player according to 247 Sports. Jackson, a middle linebacker listed at 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, was a four-year contributor and three-year starter at Virginia, where he accumulated 352 total tackles including 100-plus tackles in each of the last three seasons.

His 2022 season was his best to-date with 103 tackles, five sacks and four pass deflections. He is entering Iowa's program with three all-ACC selection honors. Jackson is the seventh transfer portal addition for the Hawkeyes and the first defensive player. The next available window for players to enter into the NCAA transfer portal is May 1-15 at the conclusion of teams' spring practice periods. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Virginia's Nick Jackson is a three-time all-conference linebacker who entered the NCAA transfer portal after last season. He's still there. Jackson is just one of over 120 players who entered the NCAA transfer portal this offseason and have not found a new program yet going into Wednesday's national signing day, per a source with access to the database. Many of those, including the contingent from UVa and Virginia Tech, are backups and role players. But a few, like Jackson, were starters in 2022, while others, including Artis and Virginia running back Ronnie Walker, the former Hopewell High star, and defensive back Chayce Chalmers, saw decent playing time. Jackson was a three-time All-ACC selection who posted over 100 tackles each of the past three years. - Roanoke Times

All-ACC inside linebacker Nick Jackson, the unquestioned heart of the Virginia defense, has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal Monday, Jackson said Monday, becoming the fourth Cavaliers' starter to do so this offseason. "Hardest decision I've ever made," said Jackson. "And not ruling coming back to the Cavs out." Jackson led the Cavaliers with 104 tackles this season, his third straight year with over 100 stops. He also had a career-high five sacks and earned second-team all-conference honors.

"It's been nothing less than a dream and honor to play for the University of Virginia," said Jackson. "The support and everything has been more than I could imagine when I committed in 2018." Jackson joins quarterback Brennan Armstrong, cornerback Fentrell Cypress and left guard John Paul Flores as Virginia starters in the portal. In all, UVa - which went 3-7 in its first season under coach Tony Elliott - has 12 players in the portal as of midday Monday. That group includes backups in defensive back Chayce Chalmers, offensive lineman Zachary Teter, wide receiver Nathaniel Beal III and long snapper Lee Dudley. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Consecutive seasons with 100-plus tackles takes consistency and extreme effort above all else, Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson said Thursday. Jackson, the senior whose 117 takedowns topped the Atlantic Coast Conference last fall and whose 105 tackles were second most in the league the year before, can make it three straight campaigns with more than 100 tackles this coming season. "I just try to be mobile," he said. "I think I can make plays wherever the field is. I think I can make plays against the pass and I can run down running backs. I can make plays on the perimeter and then I can be fluid in the box. I just think being consistent and physical in the box has allowed me to make plays and maximize those opportunities."

This summer, Jackson said, he's prioritized running to increase his endurance in order to play at his best for the 70 to 80 snaps he expects to be on the field for each Saturday. "And you've got to play every snap like it's your last," Jackson said. "It's the matter of fact in this sport we're playing. Anything can happen at any moment and nothing is guaranteed, so playing every snap like it's your last is why. I want to play for my brothers and those guys over there are counting on me every single time to try and make the play, so if I'm not running as hard as I can, I'm doing something wrong." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson was named to the preseason All-ACC team Tuesday morning. He was the only UVa player to land on team. Jackson recorded 105 tackles last season, finishing second in the ACC and sixth nationally. Entering his junior season, Jackson is expected to be one of the most productive linebackers in the ACC. He finished last year on the All-ACC third team.

Jackson was named to the Butkus Award watch list earlier this week. The Butkus Award is awarded annually to the best linebacker in the country. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound defender excels stopping the run. Defensive coaches have stressed the need for better coverage from Jackson ahead of this season. There's room for improvement for the linebacker, but expectations are high this fall for the tackling machine. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

A connection dating back to the 1980s has resulted in one of the bright spots for Virginia's 1-4 football team. The Cavaliers' leading tackler is Nick Jackson, a sophomore linebacker from Atlanta who had 16 tackles, eight unassisted, in the Cavaliers' 19-14 loss Saturday at Miami. "Nick Jackson (6 foot 1, 235 pounds) is currently our best defensive football player in terms of his production, his consistency and how he's playing," UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall said earlier this week. "He's dynamic. He's fast. He's assignment-sound. He's an excellent tackler. Nick's jump from last year to this year has been the most significant [of] any player on our team this year. He's making lots and lots and lots of plays. "So, I really am impressed."

As a senior at the Lovett School in Atlanta, Jackson was rated the No. 58 prospect in Georgia by 247Sports and the No. 64 Georgian by rivals.com. He was listed with ACC offers from Boston College, N.C. State and Syracuse, but he was not the object of a nationwide recruiting battle. And that was fine for the Cavaliers, as well as the Jackson family. His father, Doug Jackson, was a Virginia graduate with ties to the program through his UVa fraternity brother, Tony Covington. Covington was a defensive back on the 1990 Cavaliers' team that was ranked No. 1 in the country and currently serves as an analyst on radio broadcasts of UVa games. - Roanoke Times
