Oregon led 14-0 at the half, but Idaho narrowed the deficit on Jack Layne's 36-yard touchdown pass to Jake Cox. After a fie ld goal by Oregon, Layne rushed for a 4-yard TD to make it 17-14. Gabriel found Tez Johnson with a 12-yard scoring pass midway through the final quarter to salvage the win. - AP College Football

At least one big offensive piece will return for OU football in 2023. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced his return on Twitter. "This island boy found a home in Oklahoma," Gabriel posted. In his first season with the Sooners after spending three season s at Central Florida, Gabriel threw for 3,168 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions in 12 games. It was the fewest passing yards for OU's starting quarterback - including the combined Spencer Rattler/Caleb Williams numbers in 2021 - over the pas t eight seasons, except for the COVID-truncated 2020 season where Rattler threw for 3,031 yards. It was the fewest passing touchdowns for an OU starter during the span, including 2020. There were high expectations for the Sooners offense when Gabri el transferred from Orlando, where he threw for 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns in 19 games from 2019-21 before suffering a career-ending injury. In Norman, Gabriel reunited with offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who was the Knights' offensive coordinator in 2019 when Gabriel threw for a career-high 3,653 yards. His performance was inconsistent at times - he completed only 43.8% of his passes against TCU on Oct. 1 before being injured, and threw three interceptions in the Sooners' Nov. 5 loss to Baylor, b ut he also threw for more than 400 yards twice becoming the first OU quarterback since Baker Mayfield in 2017 to reach the mark multiple times in a season. - Daily Oklahoman

Dillon Gabriel threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and sixth-ranked Oklahoma hammered Nebraska 49-14 on Saturday in the Cornhuskers' first game following the firing of Scott Frost. The game was put on the schedule 10 years ago as the back end o f a home-and-home series intended to celebrate what once was among college football's greatest rivalries. Instead, it was further confirmation the Cornhuskers are just a shell of the program that decades ago battled the Sooners for conference titles year -in and year-out. OU (3-0) posted its most lopsided victory over Nebraska (1-3) since a 45-10 win in 1990. The Sooners have won seven of eight against the Huskers. The next meetings are set for 2029 and '30.The Huskers have lost 19 straight agains t Top 25 opponents and nine in a row against Bowl Subdivision teams. Frost's tenure, which lasted four years plus three games, was marked by close games. The first one under interim head coach Mickey Joseph was never in doubt after the opening quarter, a nd Memorial Stadium began emptying at halftime. Oklahoma scored 35 straight points after Nebraska opened the game with a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive. The Huskers totaled just 71 yards on their next 37 plays in the first half and punted seven times, committed two turnovers and twice turned the ball over on downs before backup quarterback Chubba Purdy ran for a late touchdown. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

If it makes anyone feel better, Dillon Gabriel is not high among the quarterbacks listed in the myriad NFL Draft prospecti that flood the marketplace. Probably because Gabriel is 6-foot tall only on tippytoes. Not that being vertically challenged is an i nsurmountable curse. At the 2018 NFL Combine, Mayfield measured 5/8 of an inch over 6-foot. A year later, Murray measured 5-foot-10. Both went No. 1 in the draft. Gabriel is listed at 5-foot-11. "It's just something I was born with," Gabriel said Tuesday . "Can't control that one, right? But everything I do in the building and the way I work is what I can control, and just being really good at that, knowing I'm not 6-5, but shoot, I'm going to get it done whichever way I can." Not to wish ill will on Gabriel's future, but the best-case scenario for OU football is that he has the kind of season Lebby predicted - unmatched production, leadership and experience - while NFL decision-makers worry about his height. Either way, the scouts won't likely d oubt Gabriel's arm. "One of the greatest things Dillon does is throw the deep ball," Lebby said. "If you look at all of his throws on tape to his freshman and sophomore years and before he got hurt last year (at UCF), he can push the ball down the field. He's got great touch on it, understands how to get the ball out of his hand a little earlier if he needs to. That's a strength of his for sure." - Daily Oklahoman

The OU Spring Game was all Brent Venables hoped it would be. An OU football celebration, with former Sooner players returning en masse, a Heisman statue dedication for Baker Mayfield, a huge crowd and a spirited game. The new OU quarterback looked compos ed and agile, just as advertised, and his 19-of-28 passing, much of it against a ferocious south wind, was solid. Against the wind, Gabriel completed 10 of 13 for 130 yards. Gabriel threw a few passes behind his target, which the Sooners occasionally hav e seen in springs past but rarely in autumn. And Gabriel threw a pass intended for Jalil Farooq on a streak route, but cornerback Kendall Dennis had excellent coverage and intercepted. - Daily Oklahoman

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has committed to become a Bruin after three seasons at Central Florida. Gabriel was rated as a Top 5 transfer quarterback by 247sports and his commitment to UCLA brings him closer to his home state of Hawai'i. Gabriel is the se cond transfer to announce his commitment to the Bruins this week, joining former Duke receiver Jake Bobo. These additions follow coach Chip Kelly's approach to the transfer portal in recent years. Kelly mentioned Wednesday that the Bruins took on only 11 early signees Wednesday in order to allow the program to explore the transfer portal to land impact players. Gabriel's commitment may indicate four-year starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is unlikely to take advantage of his extra year of eli gibility. - Orange County Register

Gabriel has averaged 3,611 passing yards through his first two seasons and it's safe to assume when he wraps up the 2021 campaign, he could wind up holding several of the school's career records. He cut his interception percentage from Year 1 (1.76%) to Year 2 (0.97%) in half while increasing his touchdown-to-interception ratio from 4.14 to 8. To put it in perspective, during his Heisman Trophy season in 2019, former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow's interception percentage was 1.14% and his touchdown-to-int erception ratio was 10. Gabriel will be a junior so there's always a chance he returns in 2022 but another solid season could be enough to draw his interest at the next level. - Orlando Sentinel

Central Florida hired Gus Malzahn as its football coach Monday, a little more than two months after he was fired by Auburn. Malzahn was 68-35 in eight years with the Tigers, never having a losing season and going 39-27 in the Southeastern Conference. UCF scheduled an afternoon news conference to introduce its new coach. UCF lost both its athletic director (Danny White) and football coach (Josh Heupel) to Tennessee last month. UCF hired Terry Mohajir as AD last week. It was an off night for UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who completed 28 of 51 passes for 330 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He started off hot, finding Jacob Harris for a 12-yard touchdown for the first score of the game. But Gabriel went 1 -of-8 during a stretch that included his second interception of the season on a ball batted up at the line of scrimmage and picked off by Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. Gabriel threw two interceptions against the Golden Hurricane during last season's 34 -31 loss. "I put this one on me," Gabriel said after dropping to 11-4 as a starter. "I've got to be better at QB play and we have to execute at a higher level. It shows when you don't do that what happens." Heupel said the entire team was responsible for breakdowns that cost the Knights a win. "Last year, we were 0-3 in those one-score games," he said. "You do the things we did tonight - coaching staff and players - that's how you end up on the wrong side of it." - Orlando Sentinel

It wasn't the way UCF wanted to start its road contest against East Carolina, but the Knights overcame mistakes and penalties to blow out the Pirates 51-28 Saturday. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw four touchdown passes for the second consecutive game a nd at one point completed a school-record 18 consecutive passes as the offense generated more than 600 yards during back-to-back games. It was the 41st straight game that the Knights scored at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. It was another inauspicious start for No. 13 UCF (2-0, 1-0 AAC), which gave up a touchdown after a 75-yard kickoff return to Georgia Tech on the opening drive last week. During Week 2 against East Carolina (0-1, 0-1 AAC), pre-snap penalties crushed the Knights ' early momentum. UCF committed false starts during its first four offensive plays of the game, a trend that proved tough to shake. The Knights set a school record with 19 penalties for a loss of 139 yards. UCF trailed in the first quarter for the second consecutive week after a 17-yard Darius Pinnix touchdown run gave East Carolina an early 7-0 lead. But it would be all Knights the rest of the way, with UCF scoring 41 consecutive points. A week after passing for a career-high 417 yards in the opener, G abriel connected with six different receivers for 408 yards. - Orlando Sentinel

Less than 48 hours after proclaiming his team as the best in Florida, UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel did what any pure passer worth his eye black would do. He held firm in the proverbial pocket. Gabriel stood by his proclamation during a brief session wi th reporters Monday, two days after his 417-yard, four-touchdown performance in the Knights' 49-21 romp of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The week before, the Yellow Jackets defeated FSU, 16-13. "I said what I said, and I was confident in it," said Gabriel, wh ose performance thrust him into early Heisman chatter. "It's up for you guys to feel whatever you guys want to feel. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but I still feel we're the best team in Florida, and that's all I've got to say." To this point, only four of the state's seven Division I-A programs have played a game. Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International are slated to open their seasons this weekend. Following UCF's win Saturday, it moved up one spot - to No. 13 - in the latest As sociated Press rankings, behind No. 12 Miami (2-0) and the fifth-ranked Gators. - Tampa Tribune

Dillon Gabriel made sure Central Florida didn't let another game slip away on the road. The sophomore threw for a career-best 417 yards and four touchdowns, leading the No. 14 Knights to a 49-21 victory over Georgia Tech in their season opener Saturday. It was a rewarding performance for UCF, coming off the uncertainty of the pandemic-affected summer and a bit of a disappointing season by its standards in 2019. The Knights lost three games - all on the road - by a total of seven points. After fall ing behind 28-7, Georgia Tech closed within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. But Gabriel led a dominating performance the rest of the way, finishing 27 of 41 to eclipse his previous career high of 365 yards in a game last season at East Carolina. "We had so many guys making plays all over the field," Gabriel said. "When that happens, you see what we can do." UCF bounced back after giving up a long return on the opening kickoff and falling behind less than a minute into the game. Tre Nixon and Ma rlon Williams each hauled in a pair of TD passes. Showing off its running back depth, UCF got touchdowns on the ground from Greg McCrae, Otis Anderson and Bentavious Thompson. Gabriel, a left-hander from Hawaii who claimed the starting job early in his f reshman year, is the one who makes the fast-paced offense go. - Central Florida Football

Dillon Gabriel burst onto the college football scene last season, setting UCF records for a true freshman quarterback. The southpaw went from a virtual unknown to a household name after earning the starting job during the second game of the 2019 season. As Gabriel prepares for his second season, there's plenty of room for improvement. "Year 1 to Year 2 for a quarterback, there's a ton of growth," UCF coach Josh Heupel said Thursday. "There is every year, but there's a ton of growth there that can happen ." Gabriel set the school's single-season record for passing yards with 3,653 while throwing 29 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He led the Knights to a 10-3 mark. Gabriel earned Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Gasparilla Bowl after passin g for 260 yards and earning three touchdowns during the Knights' 48-25 win over Marshall."He had a really good grasp of what we're doing, but just complete knowledge and control over what's going on," Heupel said. "His ability to check at the line of scrimmage when the play's not right, to understand those checks and to get us into a good play and to change protections. It changes what you're able to do offensively when your quarterback has that kind of command because he can get you out of the b ad situations. "Year 1 as a play caller, you're trying to protect him a little bit. We're ultimately still really aggressive but you want to make sure you put him in advantageous situations and try to allow him to feel comfortable." - Orlando Sentinel
