Tennessee gave coach Josh Heupel a big raise that puts him among the highest-paid coaches in college football after he led the Volunteers to their best season in more than 20 years. Heupel will make $9 million per year through the 2028 football season under the contract extension announced by the school Tuesday and signed Jan. 19. That's an increase from the $5 million extension signed last July that pushed his deal through 2027. Athletic director Danny White said Heupel's results speak for themselves with an 18-8 record, including 11-2 last season, capped by a win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

White said Heupel and his staff have energized the program and fans with his aggressive style of football. "We just needed an innovative leader like Josh Heupel to reignite the spark," White said of program that dealt with what he called a brief period of dormancy. "It’s been fun to crash the party, but as Josh said after our Orange Bowl triumph, the best is yet to come." The Vols have beaten seven Top 25 teams since Heupel was hired in January 2021, which ranks third nationally among FBS head coaches in that span. Tennessee went 3-7 in 2020 before Heupel was hired to replace Jeremy Pruitt. Tennessee finished Heupel's second season ranked sixth by The Associated Press college football poll, the Vols' highest finish since 2001. The pay increase features a $225,000 base salary with $8.725 million in supplemental pay. - AP College Football

It appears Tennessee football will finish preseason practice with Southern Cal transfer wide receiver Bru McCoy still not eligible. "There are some things that are out of my control and Bru's control and our administration's control in this process," coach Josh Heupel said. "Everybody on our side is working as hard as they possibly can to make sure we come to a resolution as quickly as possible and give the kid an opportunity to go play." McCoy must receive a release from USC or get a waiver from the NCAA to become eligible immediately. Either way, cooperation from USC would move the process along.

McCoy's multiple transfers in the past is the obstacle. The NCAA allows players to transfer once without sitting out a season. In January 2019, McCoy enrolled at USC, transferred to Texas several weeks later for spring practice and then transferred back to USC that summer before playing a college game. "Our administration has done everything that they possibly can," Heupel said. "They've been great throughout the entire process from the very beginning, and they're still working as hard as they can to give him the opportunity to play." - Knoxville News Sentinel

Southern Cal transfer wide receiver Bru McCoy is not yet eligible to play for Tennessee this season, Vols coach Josh Heupel said at SEC Media Days on Thursday. "There's another hurdle that we've still got to clear for him to be completely eligible," Heupel said. "Our administration and department are working on that. And we'll find out when we find out." The NCAA allows players to transfer once without sitting out a season. In January 2019, McCoy enrolled at USC, transferred to Texas several weeks later for spring practice and then transferred back to USC that summer before playing a college game. Tennessee starts preseason practice Aug. 1 and plays Ball State Sept. 1. McCoy, a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder, would compete to start at outside receiver. The Vols return 1,000-yard receiver Cedric Tillman, but they must replace Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Bru McCoy has dropped his legal action challenging a 2021 emergency order that removed him from the USC campus a few days after a felony domestic violence arrest involving an ex-girlfriend. McCoy, a talented wide receiver from Santa Ana Mater Dei High, transferred to Tennessee in May. He played for USC as a freshman in 2020 but sat out 2021 because he was barred from campus. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff dismissed the case Tuesday, four days after McCoy made the request in a court filing. McCoy had filed the legal action in August, stating that the university had no evidence to support its contention that McCoy posed an immediate threat to the physical health or safety of anyone and that his indefinite suspension was not supported by the facts of the case.

USC had kept the suspension in place through the 2021 season even though the Los Angeles County district attorney's office declined to file charges in August, citing insufficient evidence in a case it referred to as "he said, she said domestic violence." McCoy and his accuser met in high school and dated periodically since. The incident that led to his arrest for domestic violence occurred at his off-campus apartment July 24, 2021. In the woman's application for a temporary restraining order against McCoy last August, she wrote that McCoy "kicked and punched me multiple times in the ribs, strangled my neck then head butted me in the nose fracturing it, spit in my face repeatedly, pinned me down and used my arms to force me to hit myself in the face and head." - Los Angeles Times

Bru McCoy sat out his sophomore season after being accused and arrested of domestic assault. The case was eventually dropped, but McCoy left the Trojans for a second time anyway - in 2019 he departed Southern Cal and went to Texas briefly before returning. Since he had already used his free transfer, McCoy will need a waiver from the NCAA in order to play this season. If he does receive it, he could be a big boost to Tennessee's stellar offense. McCoy is a former five-star recruit and the No. 9 player in the nation out of Mater Dei High School in California.

"Bru (has a) big catch radius, great hands, is very smart, very knowledgeable of the game," Hooker said. "He works extremely hard. He comes in every day to take care of his body...He takes it seriously. He wants to be a pro about things, and that's how we expect him to be." Tennessee had one of the best offenses in the nation last season, despite being in the most difficult conference in college football. Among SEC teams, the Vols trailed only Alabama in points while finishing second in the conference in rushing yards per game and third in total yards. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Wide receiver Bru McCoy is looking for a fresh start with Tennessee football just as more information about his turbulent exit from Southern Cal surfaces. McCoy's issues at USC were already widely reported. But a Los Angeles Times investigative report this week shed light on details of his departure, a process that began with his arrest and suspension from USC. McCoy announced his transfer to UT on May 3. But he told 247Sports that he informed UT of his decision in late March. Presumably, UT vetted McCoy's situation in the weeks in between. Per NCAA rule, the university cannot comment on McCoy, a commitment, until he enrolls or files financial aid paperwork, which should occur later this month. McCoy could not be reached for comment.

The circumstances of McCoy's exit from USC are notable in UT's decision to accept his transfer. But they also could factor into his eligibility to play for the Vols in the 2022 season. The NCAA allows players to transfer once without sitting out a season. In spring 2019, McCoy enrolled at USC, transferred to Texas a few weeks later and then transferred back to USC that summer. McCoy would need a waiver from the NCAA to play immediately after transferring to UT. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining. McCoy, a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder, is a talented wide receiver who could help UT's record-breaking offense. The former five-star recruit was expected to be one of the best wideouts in the Pac-12 before his 2021 season was derailed. - Knoxville News Sentinel

WR Bru McCoy's most likely last opportunity to prove himself hangs in the balance with Tennessee as the Vols hold out hope he can still become the player so many were convinced he would be. Here is his travel log: After Initially signing with Tom Herman and The University of Texas in 2019, McCoy, a one-time sure fire recruit from SoCal's Mater Dei High school, entered the transfer portal deciding to return closer to home and enroll at USC under Clay Helton to begin his collegiate career. After a productive redshirt freshman season in Los Angeles, McCoy appeared poised to live up to the hype entering his sophomore year but did not play a snap at USC during the 2021 season after he was arrested in July on suspicion of domestic violence.

Although the Los Angeles District Attorney's office did not file criminal charges against McCoy, USC decided not to reinstate the former five-star after concluding their own Title IX investigation before the beginning of last season. Now McCoy is set to join his third program in four years, aiming to rejuvenate a once promising career alongside Josh Heupel and his high powered Rocky Top offense. After losing Velus Jones and JaVonta Payton to the NFL, the Vols will have to replace over 1,200 yards and 13 TDs from last season, paving the way for a dynamic perimeter option like McCoy to excel. - 247 Sports/LA Times

Wide receiver Bru McCoy, a Southern Cal transfer and former five-star recruit, has committed to Tennessee. It could be a win-win situation, that is, if the nature of McCoy's exit from USC isn't an issue. The Vols get a talented 6-foot-3, 220-pound target to add to their offense, which was the highest scoring in program history last season. And McCoy gets a fresh start after a turbulent three years at USC that included a transfer, illness, arrest, removal from the roster, Title IX investigation and another transfer. In December 2018, McCoy was the No. 1 athlete, by position, and No. 9 overall player in his recruiting class when he signed with USC, according to 247Sports Composite. But he transferred to Texas and then back to USC in spring 2019.

McCoy redshirted in the 2019 season because of an unspecified illness. In 2020, he made an immediate impact with 21 receptions for 236 yards and two TDs in six games during a COVID-shortened season. In 2021, McCoy was named to the preseason Pac-12 team by numerous publications. But his July 24 arrest on suspicion of felony intimate partner violence derailed his season. The Los Angeles district attorney's office declined to file charges against McCoy, citing "insufficient evidence." - Knoxville News Sentinel

USC receiver Bru McCoy won't face criminal charges after the Los Angeles County district attorney's office declined to file a case following his arrest last month on suspicion of felony intimate partner violence. The district attorney's office cited insufficient evidence when asked about its decision but offered no further details. "We appreciate the careful consideration by both the district attorney's office and LAPD," Michael Goldstein, McCoy's attorney, said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. "We always trusted the process and the right decision was made." McCoy, 21, was arrested July 24 at 5:30 p.m. on suspicion of violating California Penal Code Section 273.5(a), which pertains to a person who "willfully inflicts corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition" upon a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant or dating partner. He was released the same night on $50,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Nov. 24. - Los Angeles Times

USC wide receiver Bru McCoy was arrested on July 24 on suspicion of felony intimate partner violence with injury, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed on Monday. McCoy, 21, was placed on $50,000 bail and released from jail the same night as his arrest. Police responded to the incident around 5:30 p.m. that evening. No charges have been filed against McCoy at this time, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office confirmed.

In a statement when contacted about the arrest, USC athletics said that McCoy has been temporarily suspended from team activities. "USC does not condone violence of any kind. We are aware of the situation, and USC's Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX is reviewing it," the statement from USC read. "Because of federal student privacy laws, we are unable to share additional information at this time." McCoy is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24. McCoy enrolled at USC in 2019 for the spring semester after graduating early from Mater Dei. Soon after, he transferred to Texas and participated in spring practice with the Longhorns. But he transferred back to USC that summer. - Orange County Register

USC football's near-unthinkable post-Memorial Day transfer successes became official Tuesday night when the program announced the arrivals of Santa Ana Mater Dei wide receiver Bru McCoy and Bellflower St. A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed McCoy was arrested on July 24 at 5:30 p.m. on suspicion of intimate partner violence with injury. The violation, listed under California Penal Code section 273.5(a), pertains to a person who "willfully inflicts corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition" upon a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant or dating partner.

McCoy was released that same night on $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24. No further details about the incident were immediately available. After a tumultuous start to his college career that included a back-and-forth transfer saga and a mysterious illness, McCoy was expected to finally emerge this season as one of the top options in a high-octane USC passing game. Last season, he caught 21 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, positioning himself for a breakout season in 2021. McCoy now faces pending felony charges, just a few days ahead of the start of USC's training camp. - Los Angeles Times

First, it was a simple out route and a four-yard pickup on second down. Then, USC quarterback Kedon Slovis went back to one of his newer targets on an inside slant for 11 yards and the first down.' Two plays later, the big physical receiver ducked under a tackle and turned a short gain into 23 yards and an entry point in the red zone. It was a critical opening drive to the second half as USC attempted to build a two-possession lead over Utah, and on three out of four plays the Trojans went to redshirt freshman receiver Bru McCoy. In a position group filled with veterans and other young up-and-comers like himself, McCoy has established himself in the USC receiver hierarchy this year. Slovis and offensive coordinator Graham Harrell have trusted him to be the fourth man on the field, and he's shown up for those moments.

Like that drive against Utah, like his tipped touchdown reception in the wild comeback against Arizona State. "He's been kinda taking his role and just starring in it, whatever it is, if it's five plays, if it's 20 plays, if it's 30 plays, he just goes as hard as he can and he just tries to make plays," receivers coach Keary Colbert said Wednesday. "He's a very hardworking young man. Football means a lot to him." McCoy is fourth on USC in receptions (13) and receiving yards (142), behind last year's stalwarts Amon-Ra St. Brown, Drake London and Tyler Vaughns. - Orange County Register

After two years of waiting marked by a mysterious illness and a winding transfer saga, Bru McCoy was due a break. As it turned out, in his long-awaited debut Saturday for USC, he'd get two. Both of which would be crucial in securing a 28-27 comeback victory over Arizona State. The redshirt freshman wideout caught only two passes for 19 yards before the Trojans faced a fourth-and-13 with fewer than three minutes remaining. McCoy wasn't even the target when quarterback Kedon Slovis uncorked a throw toward the left corner of the end zone, knowing a penalty flag for offside against Arizona State had already been thrown. The target of that throw, Amon-ra St. Brown, was blanketed by defenders. But he managed to tip the ball into the air. Nearby, McCoy was conveniently waiting. As the ball fluttered in the air, McCoy snagged it. Then, he threw his arms up in celebration.

"It felt great," McCoy said. "More than anything, just happy to be out there, happy to help the team get a big win. It's been a long time since I've been able to play a game, so there were a lot of jitters heading into the game." But those jitters were well behind him when, immediately after his touchdown catch, the freshman was among the Trojans sent to recover a desperation onside kick. McCoy had never practiced onside coverage before. When freshman kicker Parker Lewis delivered a perfect attempt on his first-ever try, McCoy thought he'd messed up his assignment. "I thought I could attack the ball," McCoy said. "I was kind of waiting for that big one up to jump up and go get it, but it stayed low. It kind of fell inside and I was staring at the ball the whole time." - Los Angeles Times

The redshirt freshman's journey to actually suiting up on a Saturday has been a long one. He enrolled at USC early out of Mater Dei High, then transferred to Texas later that month. But before the summer, McCoy had transferred back from Austin to Los Angeles. He never played in a game as a true freshman, though, because he did not apply for a waiver from the NCAA and because of a fever that kept him off the practice field until USC's bowl preparations. McCoy can finally play in 2020, and the hype around the former five-star recruit has been big during training camp. Coaches have raved about his play. Defensive backs have talked about what a tough cover he is in practice. There are a lot of bodies for USC at receiver, but as Drake London showed last year, a freshman can earn his spot in the rotation and then some. - Orange County Register
