A lot has changed for Theo Wease since he arrived at OU as a freshman in 2019. The redshirt junior wide receiver watched the other two wideouts in his class, Jadon Haselwood and Trejan Bridges, depart the program. Wease worked to become tied for the Soon ers' top passing target as a sophomore in 2020. He watched his role get reduced to a sideline spectator after missing all of last season with a lower leg injury. But as OU prepares for the 2022 season, Wease takes pride in being one of the team's most ex perienced, battle-tested players. "I'm the older guy now, which is crazy to say," Wease said. "I remember when I was just a freshman. It's crazy how college works. Some of your teammates who are with you in January might be gone by April. But I'm still h ere, standing tall and ready to finish the mission."Wease almost joined the list of departed Sooners. In an interview on The Podcast On The Prairie on March 9, Wease admitted that he nearly transferred to Ole Miss to join forces with Jeff Lebby, w ho was then the Rebels' offensive coordinator. But everything fell into place when Lebby was hired as OU's offensive coordinator last December. Now, Wease hopes to become a fixture in a system that he feels suits his playing style. "It's up-tempo and fas t-paced," Wease said. "I just want to go out there, compete to the highest level that I know I can and compete to my full potential." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma sophomore Theo Wease developed a habit of making important catches against Texas on Saturday. Most of them became difficult to remember as the game dragged deep into the afternoon and concluded with OU winning 53-45 in quadruple overtime. The ea rly ones were also easy to overlook, considering his final catch was a grab via quarterback Spencer Rattler that converted a two-point play in the fourth overtime period. His playmaking ability through the chaotic contest was something OU coach Lincoln Riley has been after all season - receivers that can make difficult plays. "A number of Theo's were really competitive," Riley said. "And he got a really nice ball from Spencer on his scoring play. Some key plays (from him)." Wease finished with a team-h igh eight receptions, accounting for 52 of OU's 261 passing yards.Wease had only seven catches over the Sooners' first three games ahead of Saturday's tilt with Texas. His performance, along with his fellow receivers, in a victory might be the mor ale boost the OU passing attack needed after consecutive losses to Kansas State and Iowa State. "I definitely think we're gonna take a big step the rest of the season," Wease said. "All the receivers, we played great together. I felt the chemistry. I jus t felt the energy that everything felt great with the team. "Spencer, he's definitely been leading this very well, it's definitely showing on Saturdays. Before the Peach Bowl, Oklahoma receiver Theo Wease was asked about his experience playing behind CeeDee Lamb. "When you're playing behind the best receiver in the country, there's no rush," Wease said. "Your time will always come." That time might arriv e sooner than expected. Entering his sophomore season Wease will be among those expected to pick up the slack if Jadon Haselwood is unable to recuperate before OU's opener. Haselwood is sidelined for the foreseeable future with a torn anterior cruciate l igament, according to multiple reports, leaving the Sooners' receiving room thinner than planned. OU was already trying to fortify one of its outside receiver positions with Lamb moving on to the NFL after a decorated collegiate career.The rebuild is even more important considering the playmaking Haselwood flashed as a freshman - his 19 catches for 272 yards didn't draw much national attention, but he averaged 14.3 yards per grab. Haselwood, at 6 feet 2 inches, was also one of OU's bigger targets outside. He and redshirt junior Charleston Rambo's were natural candidates to become OU's go-to names at the Z receiver position. Wease, who plays the same spot, had big moments as a freshman, including two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown in OU's 2 5-point comeback against Baylor. That experience looms larger with context of Haselwood's injury. "It was a blessing, honestly," Wease said in December. "My number got called, I stepped up to the plate.
