Memphis football has been quiet on quarterback Grant Gunnell's transfer to North Texas. On Friday, Tigers quarterback Seth Henigan provided some insight onto Gunnell's departure. Henigan, who started all but one game last season as a true freshman, went on Sports56 on "Mornings with Greg & Eli" and was asked whether Gunnell's decision was surprising. Henigan said the two always chatted about how they were evaluated during spring practice. "We're constantly communicating about what either other of us wou ld do and we could see it. I was getting all the reps basically with the ones (first team) throughout the whole entire spring," Henigan said. "(Grant) made some great plays in the different spring games that we had. He had a great spring game. But in my opinion, he just felt like he knew I was going to be the guy so he was like, all right, I'm going to try and go start somewhere." Henigan, who praised Gunnell as his best friend and mentor, added he believed Gunnell wanted a chance to start given his exp erience starting two seasons at Arizona before transferring to Memphis in December 2020.Henigan also understood Gunnell's decision because if he had lost the job, he would have decided to transfer. "For Grant and I both, we've played collegiate fo otball, we've been the guy before, we've started games in college football before," Henigan said. "That film, coaches love that film and they're like 'Oh he's played before so he can play here' and then they come after you. That's the nature of it all no w, especially with teams with money and stuff like that. It's just a whole new era of college football with NIL (name, image and likeness)." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The former Arizona Wildcats quarterback, who sat out last season at Memphis with a leg injury, committed to North Texas after entering the transfer portal this season, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Gunnell, a Houston native, set Texas' all-time passin g yards and touchdown records at St. Pius X High School, and was one of Arizona's highest-rated commits during the Kevin Sumlin era. Gunnell, a previous Texas A&M commit, also held offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU and Michigan as a four-star prospect in 2019. Gunnell played for the Wildcats from 2019-20, playing eight games as a freshman and starting for the UA in the condensed pandemic-influenced 2020 season. - Arizona Star News

Memphis quarterback Grant Gunnell entered the transfer portal Friday (April 29) just one week after competing in the Tigers' spring game, a source familiar with the decision confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. The source requested anonymity because no of ficial announcement has been made. Gunnell is also no longer listed on the Tigers' roster The news comes as a surprise after Gunnell had a strong performance in the spring game where he threw two touchdown passes on his two opening drives.Gunnell , a junior, missed last season with a right leg injury that required surgery. But his play in both the spring game and the open scrimmage in Nashville showed why the Tigers re-opened the quarterback battle despite Seth Henigan being named a Freshman All- American after starting every game last season. Gunnell showed no issues with his mobility in either open practice. He led three scoring drives in the Nashville scrimmage, including two touchdown passes. With Gunnell's departure, Henigan likely remains t he starter when preseason practice opens in August. The Tigers' only other options include freshman Tevin Carter, who enrolled in January, and junior Hunter Hulsey, who walked on last season. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Grant Gunnell is still a Cat, just not the one that wears red and blue, but one that dons royal blue and Tiger stripes on their helmets. The former Arizona Wildcats quarterback, who left the UA after two seasons in Tucson, following the dismissal of head coach Kevin Sumlin, reportedly transferred to Memphis on Thursday, according to 247Sports' Christian Fowler. Gunnell formerly was committed to Texas A&M when Sumlin was still in College Station and maintained a close relationship with offensive coordina tor Noel Mazzone, who often compared Gunnell to former protege Brock Osweiler. The 6-foot-6-inch, 228-pound Gunnell completed 165 of 248 passes for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns, and went 1-7 as a starter in two seasons. The 6-2, 203-pound Curry had 16 c atches for 157 yards. - Arizona Star News

Arizona fired football coach Kevin Sumlin following a blowout loss to rival Arizona State that extended a record losing streak. Sumlin was fired Saturday, less than 24 hours after a 70-7 loss to Arizona State that stretched the Wildcats' losing streak to 12 games spanning two seasons. "When we hired Kevin three years ago, we had very high hopes for our football program," Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke said in a statement. "Unfortunately, we simply have not seen the results and upward trajectory in our program that we needed to, and I believe now is the time for a change in leadership. I thank Kevin for his service to the University of Arizona and wish him the very best in the future." Heeke said the school will honor the terms of Sumlin's existin g contract, including a $7.5 million buyout. Sumlin entered this year on the hot seat after the Wildcats closed the 2019 season with seven straight losses. - AP College Football

The status of Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell remained unclear Monday afternoon when Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin addressed the media ahead of the Territorial Cup. Gunnell hurt his shoulder on the first play of the UCLA game on Nov. 28. He did not retur n and sat out last week's loss against Colorado. Gunnell could be seen stretching and working with a trainer during pregame warmups, but he did not throw any passes. The Wildcats practiced Sunday evening. Their latest meeting with rival Arizona State kic ks off Friday, so the team - and Gunnell - will have one fewer day to get ready.Asked if he had an update on Gunnell, Sumlin said: "Not yet. We'll probably know a little bit more today and tomorrow, let's just put it that way. He didn't do anythin g last week. So we're going to defer to our medical team and see where he is later on in the week." Sumlin added that Gunnell would need to practice in order to play. After starting three games as a freshman last year, Gunnell took over the No. 1 job in spring. In two-plus games, he has completed 52 of 76 passes (68.4%) for 547 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. - Arizona Star News

Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell's status for the Colorado game Saturday is still being evaluated, Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin said. Gunnell injured his right (throwing) shoulder on the first play from scrimmage in Arizona's loss at UCLA last week. He d id not return. "We'll see where he is," Sumlin said during his weekly news conference Monday. "If he can go, he can go. If not...I think it's too early to even talk about that." Sumlin declined to go into detail about Gunnell's injury. He landed on his r ight shoulder after releasing a pass. He was not wearing a sling while watching the remainder of the game from the sideline. "I'm not going to go specifically on where he is right now," Sumlin said. "He wants to play. But...we're going to do the best thi ng for him and his career." Freshman Will Plummer replaced Gunnell and likely would start against the Buffaloes at Arizona Stadium. - Arizona Star News

Pressure? Grant Gunnell welcomes it. Not necessarily the in-your-face pressure from a blitzing linebacker. No quarterback likes that, including Arizona's. We're talking about the pressure that comes with leading an offense and becoming the face of a prog ram. It can be daunting, especially when that program has lost seven games in a row, has an embattled head coach and lacks depth and experience at key positions on defense. Gunnell wouldn't have it any other way. "There's always pressure when you're play ing football," the sophomore said. "That's not a bad thing to me. I see and feel pressure as something that drives me. If you're not feeling pressure, those butterflies in your stomach, you don't love football. You can ask anyone." Arizona is asking a lo t of Gunnell. Although he has only three career starts, he is the undisputed starting quarterback for 2020 and beyond. He was tasked with keeping the team together when they couldn't physically be together in the spring and summer. He represented the Wil dcats during the virtual version of Pac-12 Media Days.Only two of the 12 players were sophomores: Gunnell and Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. UA players recently voted for team captains. Gunnell was the only sophomore to make the cut. Th e other four were fourth- or fifth-year veterans. "He's a natural-born leader," Wildcats cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace said. Although there's still work to be done - Gunnell showed great promise as a freshman, but it's a small sample size and he st ill has much to prove - the record-setting quarterback from Houston has toiled to reach this point. He's the starting QB for a Power Five program, piloting an offense built around him. "Grant has unbelievable passion for this game, and he wants to be rea lly good at it," said offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Noel Mazzone, who recruited Gunnell to Texas A&M before both made their way to Tucson. "This is something that he's worked (for) basically his whole young life up to this point, to play m ajor college football. It's just very, very important to him." - Arizona Star News

Teammates and coaches have noticed a change in the second-year passer, who played well in a part-time role as a freshman last year. Gunnell shared time with senior Khalil Tate. Gunnell led the offense at times but was never truly in a position to lead th e team. He is now. "It's hard to be a vocal leader when you're a freshman," veteran center Josh McCauley said. "That's something he'll … continue to pick up as we progress and as we grow as a team." While the Wildcats were forced to be apart because of the coronavirus pandemic, Gunnell made a concerted effort to check up on his teammates - on both sides of the ball. He'd regularly send out text messages with a goal of "staying on top of guys, making sure everyone's OK, off the field, on the field," Gu nnell said. "Making sure everyone's getting their work in in the weight room, not slacking."Gunnell spoke out through social media and other channels when the Pac-12 football season was in limbo. He participated in the player-driven #WeWantToPlay movement in August. In September, Gunnell wrote and published a letter to California Gov. Gavin Newsom asking him to help clear a path for the four Pac-12 schools in that state to begin practice. "I had no idea he did any of that stuff; he just did it," said Noel Mazzone, Arizona's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. "He's a very unselfish person. I think that just shows that what was important was not just, 'Hey I want to play football this year.' What it shows is his love for the game and hi s overall concern for all of college football, how important it is to our communities. "I think he sees that, and I think that was a pretty mature thing for him to do." - Arizona Star News

Arizona sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell, on the behalf of UA football players, sent a letter to California governor Gavin Newsom to support USC's appeal - issued on Tuesday - for the state to loosen health guidelines in order for the Pac-12 to play f ootball in the fall. Gunnell, who was also a part of the Pac-12 players' movement, "We Want To Play," in August, said, "Not only are you the governor of the state in which four of our Pac-12 universities reside, but you are also the governor to more than 30 football student-athletes at the University of Arizona who hail from California and whose families remain your constituents."Citing California's four MLB and three NFL teams currently having seasons in the state, the letter said, "It's difficu lt for us to understand why we cannot find a path forward even the Pac-12 has consistently made the well-being of student-athletes its top priority." After the Pac-12 announced its partnership with Quidel to provide efficient daily testing kits, which ca n yield results in 15 minutes, commissioner Larry Scott said he was hopeful for a change of course to play football before the calendar year. However, health guidelines in California and Oregon suggest participating in football activities is unsafe. - Ar izona Star News

Arizona played without its starting quarterback and its most productive running back, a combination that would have likely led to disaster last season. This year's Wildcats have a different kind of swagger to them. Back-up quarterback, multiple running b acks having to carry the load, young players in key positions — doesn't matter to them. Grant Gunnell threw for 352 yards and a touchdown in his first career start and Arizona held on to beat UCLA 20-17 Saturday night after JJ Molson missed a 39-yard f ield goal in the closing seconds. "These guys are learning on the run, they're growing up," Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said. "To play in the last two games the way they've played down the stretch, for a young football team (it's big)"Arizona (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) played without its two best offensive players with quarterback Khalil Tate and running back J.J. Taylor out due to leg injuries. Gunnell had seen spot action earlier this season, but was making his first collegiate start. The freshman played like he had been the starter all along, keeping his poise while completing 29 of 44 passes. "I have full confidence in Grant," Arizona linebacker Tony Fields said. "He deals with us in practice every day and somehow, some finds a way to make plays like he did tonight." - Arizona/AP College Football
