 Zion Nelson, Miami, Player News

Jalen Rivers, who has played mostly guard at UM, again lined up as the first-team left tackle, while Chris Washington was the first-team right tackle. Left tackle Zion Nelson, who missed much of last season because of a knee injury, remains out for undisclosed medical reasons; Mario Cristobal has indicated he's optimistic that Nelson will be able to play this season. Rivers could end up starting at left tackle if Nelson doesn't win the job this summer, or if the Canes believe five-star freshmen tackles Samson Okunlola and Francis Mauigoa aren't ready for starting jobs. - Miami Herald

After making his season debut in the Hurricanes' close loss to the then-No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies in Week 3, Nelson didn't play against the Blue Raiders in Week 4 because he experienced "a setback," Cristobal said. Nelson, who garnered preseason All-America recognition, missed the first two games of the year after having surgery to clean loose cartilage out of his left knee in July. The star tackle is now questionable for Miami's next game. "We expect that it's going to be close," Cristobal said. The junior started every game at left tackle last year, but came off the bench in his lone appearance this season, rotating in at both tackle spots. Offensive lineman John Campbell Jr. has started all four games at left tackle and earned rave reviews from Cristobal. - Miami Herald

The biggest news of the day at the Miami Hurricanes' media day belonged to the biggest body - or at least close to it - in attendance. Miami Hurricanes left tackle Zion Nelson, a 6-5, 320-pound NFL prospect and projected first-rounder by several outlets, said he underwent surgery to remove "floating cartilage" in his left knee about three weeks ago and was given a six-to-eight-week timetable for making his return. Though he wouldn't give specifics, Nelson will likely miss the Sept. 3 opener against Bethune-Cookman. Nelson told the Miami Herald he would probably be in the weight room rehabbing and working out during Miami's opening fall camp practice Friday morning.

Nelson's backup, for now at least, is John Campbell, also 6-5 and 320 pounds. Campbell, a fifth-year redshirt junior, sat out the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL in his left knee that he said he sustained while falling during drills "just before fall camp." "These big guys need a tuneup every now and then,'' said UM coach Mario Cristobal, who noted that Campbell "is already in the groove. We expect John to be one of the best players in the conference, actually in the country. We think that highlly of him. He has a lot of the same traits that Zion has." "The position that those guys play, it comes with a lot. They both battled through some stuff." - Miami Herald

2022 PRESEASON OUTLAND TROPHY WATCHLIST: OT Zion Nelson, Miami,...A fourth-year junior from Sumter, S.C., Nelson has played in all 36 games since getting to Miami in 2019. The 6-foot-5, 316-pounder has started 32 contests, including all 12 in 2021 and all 13 in 2019. An All-ACC Honorable Mention last season, Nelson has helped the Hurricanes average 444.5 yards per game over the last two years. That figure includes 300.2 passing yards and 144.3 rushing yards per contest across 23 outings. - Miami Football

Miami offensive lineman Zion Nelson is not necessarily an unknown prospect. Most preseason previews have tabbed him as an All-American in some capacity or another. He has held down Miami's starting left tackle spot since he was a freshman, which is an incredible accomplishment in its own. The thing about 2022 is that Miami will be more under a microscope in Mario Cristobal's first year, which is great news for Nelson - if he can maintain his elite level of play. Blocking a whole season in an offense that should take a huge leap with Tyler Van Dyke established as the starter will give NFL teams a ton of quality film to look at for Nelson. - Miami Herald and online sources

Offensive tackle Zion Nelson and defensive tackle Nesta Silvera - two key pieces of UM's lines - haven't been spotted during practice media access this week, but there's apparently no cause for concern. Coach Manny Diaz said neither had surgery and both are on track to play in the Sept. 4 opener against Alabama. "Both guys are experiencing soreness from a previous situation," Diaz said. "Being held out, precautionary. Both guys have a lot of experience. I would expect when we start game prep next week, I would expect both to be back with us." Asked if everyone will be available for the Alabama game, Diaz said: "We'll have pretty much a full complement of our guys."

Nelson has not participated in at least the past four practices attended by media, going back to early last week. He was not at Tuesday's and Thursday's practices during the media's 40 minutes of viewing. Nelson, 6-5 and 316 pounds, started seven games last season at left tackle, including the last six of the season. He has been projected by various college football analysts as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. - Miami Herald
