It's like musical chairs at the quarterback position in the SEC West, but according to Fisher, Auburn is one of the winners. Fisher raved about Calzada and the type of person he is and the type of player he is last week at SEC Media Days. "Zach is a trem endous human being," Fisher said. "I hated to lose Zach. He's a competitor. He has tremendous arm talent. He's competitive, he's tough, he's smart. He's a team guy. Zach will do anything in the world to win for his teams. "I think they're getting a great human being with a talented football player," he went on. "It's going to be a pain in our tail when we play them. I know that. I know he's in a battle right now, but Zach is a very talented guy, and they're blessed to have him. He will do a great job fo r them."Calzada famously quarterbacked Texas A&M's upset win over Alabama last season in College Station, highlighting a season of ups and downs. In Auburn, he's hoping to have more ups - but he has to find his way onto the field first. Auburn hea d coach Bryan Harsin has said it'll be an open battle going into fall camp between Calzada, who was limited in the spring with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, and returner TJ Finley, freshman Holden Geriner, and Hoover alum and Oregon transfer Ro bby Ashford. Calzada finished last season throwing 56.1-percent for 2,185 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. - Opelika-Auburn News

Zach Calzada's toughness is one of the lasting impressions he left on Fisher and his Texas A&M teammates before entering the transfer portal in the offseason. Calzada, who started 10 games for the Aggies last fall, transferred to Auburn in the spring and is firmly in the mix for the Tigers' starting quarterback job as fall camp approaches. That toughness he displayed at Kyle Field last November also left an impression on his competitors-turned-teammates at Auburn. "You want to play with somebody that go t that dog in him," Auburn running back Tank Bigsby said. "He didn't back down, he didn't give up, he didn't quit. I'd rather play with somebody that doesn't want to quit all the time." Calzada and offensive lineman Layden Robinson shared the Texas A&M t eam award for toughness at the end of last season, both of them being honored with that accolade during the team's annual December banquet.Robinson was part of the same signing class as Calzada and has long respected him as both a quarterback on t he field and a person off it. He admitted that it was tough to see Calzada transfer to Auburn, but he spoke fondly of the player the Tigers are getting. "Zach is going to be amazing for the Auburn Tigers; it's just going to make it even tougher when we p lay them," Robinson said. "…Zach has earned a lot of our guys' respect, and that's never going to change, because we know what type of guy Zach Calzada is, and we know what he brings to the table." - Birmingham News

Auburn's four-man quarterback battle is still as open as ever two weeks away from the beginning of fall camp, but some small updates were provided at SEC Media Days Thursday. Bryan Harsin offered a general timeline for when he'd name his starter, saying that decision will have to be made as the Tigers begin prep for their Week 1 game against Mercer on Sept. 3. "I usually say it's about 10 days out is kind of where it's happened," Harsin said. "But we'll name a starter when it's right. There'll be a time in camp where everybody knows, and then it's just a matter of how we want to roll it out."Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada, TJ Finley, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner are set to duke it out in Auburn's battle for the QB1 spot. All have all gotten opportunities to compete, Harsin said, and regardless of order, the quartet is likely to make up the Tigers' quarterback depth chart. Calzada, who transferred to Auburn in January, was sidelined during spring practices and not a full go until late May. In two years at A&M, he threw for 2,318 yards and 19 touchdowns with a 56% completion percentage. He played in 15 games and made 10 starts in 2021, making him the Tigers' most experienced quarterback. - Opelika-Auburn News

Zach Calzada, the Texas A&M transfer who joined the program in the spring, will be "full-go" for summer workouts after being limited in the spring due to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, head coach Bryan Harsin said Monday in Alexander City. Calza da is one of two candidates for the starting job - along with T.J. Finley - who has prior starting experience in the SEC. Auburn QB competition takes center stage at A-Day "He's good," Harsin said. "...He's really been pushing himself and studying and pr eparing, so now it's just a matter of letting him get out there this summer. There's going to be no contact, there's no helmets, no pads, anything like that, so he's going to get all the reps he needs in the summertime." Calzada's introduction, without l imitations, will inject some more intrigue into the race for QB1 this offseason. He spent most of the spring as the fourth quarterback in rotation for drills, behind Finley, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner. During the Tigers' 10th practice of spring, Calzada was seen receiving some reps with the first-team offensive line and running back Tank Bigsby, though those came during the final period of the day and limited to handoffs near the goal line. Calzada was also held out of Auburn's A-Day spring game, as Finley received the majority of the first-team reps, Ashford worked with the second team and Geriner engineered a late scoring drive in the fourth quarter. - Birmingham News

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings. No 6 - Zach Calzada, Auburn (from Texas A&M). The lean here is Calzada ultimately gets the nod over Ashford and Finley thanks to experience. The former Aggies has a win over Alabama on his resume, but also 10 other career starts. Still, much like Finley, accuracy issues (56.1 completion percentage in 2 021) are a real concern. Can he show a better propensity of not throwing the ball 99 miles per hour every time? Calzada may not open Week 1 as Auburn's QB1 but he stands a strong chance of logging multiple starts in what could be a musical chairs-like co mpetition. - On3.com

During a speaking engagement this spring Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher used colorful language to proclaim his team would beat Alabama during coach Nick Saban's career. He fulfilled that promise in his first try since that vow Saturday night, handing the d efending national champions their first loss since 2019 in a thrilling upset. "Our team beat a really good football team...and that's what's important to me," Fisher said. Seth Small made a 28-yard field goal as time expired and Texas A&M stunned top-ran ked Alabama 41-38 to end the Crimson Tide's winning streak at 19 games. The victory came on Fisher's 56th birthday and is certainly Texas A&M's biggest win since Fisher took over in 2018. "I didn't know what to get him, so we thought as a team that we sh ould get a win for him," Small said. Alabama (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) had scored 21 straight points - capped by a TD reception and 2-point conversion grab by Jameson Williams - to take a 38-31 lead with five minutes to go.Texas A&M (4-2, 1-2) tied it at 38 when Zach Calzada connected with Ainias Smith for a 25-yard touchdown with three minutes left. Calzada was hit as he threw the strike and had to be helped off the field but returned for the next drive after a visit to the medical tent . Calzada returned after the Aggies forced a punt to orchestrate the winning drive, highlighted by a 17-yard pass to Isaiah Spiller before Small finished it off to send fans streaming onto the field to celebrate. "I'm proud of our guys," Fisher said. "We made plays at critical times." Calzada threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns, as the former backup played like a star. Devon Achane returned a kickoff 96 yards for a TD in the third quarter and A&M's defense got after Bryce Young all night. - Texas A &M/AP College Football

Zach Calzada threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to power No. 7 Texas A&M in a 34-0 rout of New Mexico on Saturday. The victory extends A&M's winning streak to 11 games and gives the Aggies a 3-0 start for the first time si nce opening the 2016 season with six consecutive wins. Calzada was thrust into the job last weekend against Colorado when Haynes King was injured on A&M's second possession. King had surgery this week to repair a broken right leg, leaving Calzada to run the offense.Calzada looked more comfortable, and the Aggies moved the ball much better Saturday than they did last week while scoring just 10 points in a win over the Buffaloes. They eclipsed their total points from that game in the first six minu tes of this one and built a 24-point lead by halftime. Terry Wilson, a transfer from Kentucky who had 559 yards passing in the first two games, threw for just 33 yards Saturday for New Mexico (2-1) while being hurried and harassed all day. He had an inte rception, was sacked four times and had three passes broken up by A&M's stingy defense. Texas A&M extended the lead to 21-0 when Isaiah Spiller shed three defenders on a 5-yard scoring run with about six minutes left in the second quarter. Spiller had 11 7 yards rushing to bounce back after running for just 20 yards last week. - Texas A&M Football/AP College Football

Freshman quarterback Haynes King's backup started out slowly, finished precious few drives and even fumbled the football a whisker from the goal line. Sophomore Zach Calzada came up clutch in the end, though, throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to running back Isaiah Spiller with 2:41 remaining to help fifth-ranked Texas A&M edge Colorado 10-7 Saturday. "The one thing you can say he made the plays on those drives that mattered, right there at the end," Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher said. And Fisher didn't wa nt to hear about how his Aggies should have walloped the Buffaloes, either. "First and foremost, Colorado played a heck of a football game. We got a very good football team," Fisher said. "They were a lot of the reason why we had issues today. We can sit here and say we blame it on ourselves, but they did a really, really good job, physically and schematically. "We were fortunate to come out of that one." Unbeaten if not unscathed.Spiller's TD gave the Aggies (2-0) their first lead on a day in wh ich they lost their star freshman starting quarterback to a lower right leg injury and eight of their first nine drives were three-and-outs. Colorado's hopes of an upset over the 17-point favorite Aggies ended when Brendon Lewis' pass to Dimitri Stanley on fourth-and-13 from his 22 covered just 12 yards before he was smothered by a bevy of defenders. "It gives us an identity," Spiller said of the hard-fought victory. "It was our first adversity game, it was a great challenge for us." Maybe it'll give th e Buffs an identity, too. - Texas A&M/AP College Football
