Marcel Brooks, Texas Christian, Player News

TCU linebacker Marcel Brooks is "probably out for the rest of the year" after undergoing surgery today, according to head coach Sonny Dykes. "We're sad to hear [Brooks is out]," said Dykes. "I really hate it for Marcel. He's just had a hard time staying healthy and there's nobody that's worked any harder than he has to get back out there. Disappointed about that but I know he'll come back and do everything he can to participate in Spring ball and certainly be ready by next fall." In three games this season, Brooks recorded five tackles. He missed the first three games of the season due to a rib injury. Brooks being sidelined puts more pressure on linebackers Johnny Hodges and Jamoi Hodge to carry the load defensively. - Dallas Morning News

Senior linebacker Marcel Brooks has had quite the journey. From a five-star recruit to promising freshman at LSU to having to switch positions at TCU. Brooks has been through it all. The former blue chip recruit is back at linebacker and looks to have added on some much needed weight to his frame. Brooks is listed at 194 pounds on the roster, but could be closer to 200 after committing to the strength and conditioning plan. Brooks ran with the second team during 11-on-11 and brought Blair Conwright down for a nice tackle. - Fort Worth Star

Two defensive players were granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, including former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks and former New Mexico defensive end Dylan Horton. TCU is expected to start its season against Iowa State on Sept. 26 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. A non-conference opener against SMU next Friday has been called off amid a coronavirus outbreak among the Horned Frogs football team. Brooks is the headliner from Friday's developments. He's a former five-star recruit out of Flower Mound Marcus who has the ability to line up as a pass rusher, linebacker or safety. He recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in a backup role for LSU last season. He had one sack against Florida, and a half-sack against Texas A&M. Horton, meanwhile, provides much-needed depth along the defensive line. The Frisco High product had 23 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, in five games for New Mexico last season. - Fort Worth Star

TCU will get help on defense as Flower Mound Marcus alum and former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks is expected to join the team. A source confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Brooks is expected to enroll at TCU. Brooks was a 5-star prospect coming out of high school, according to 247Sports, ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker and the No. 32 overall prospect in the 2019 class. He recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in a backup role for LSU last season. He had one sack against Florida, and a half-sack against Texas A&M. Brooks, who entered the NCAA transfer portal in June, was expected to play a bigger role for the Tigers in 2020, but will now hope to do so for the Horned Frogs.

The 6-foot-2 defender will have to obtain an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA to play for the Horned Frogs next season. If not, he'll redshirt in 2020 and have three years of eligibility left starting in 2021. Brooks' exact position in Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense is not determined yet. He's a hybrid-type player who has the ability to play linebacker and safety, as well as a pass rusher. That's how gifted of an athlete Brooks is. - Fort Worth Star

Former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks entered the transfer portal in late June, and he is now reportedly headed to TCU, according to 247Sports. The sophomore was expected to build on a 2019 season in which he showed flashes of his playmaking ability inside former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's pass rush packages. Now, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Brooks will return to his home state at the program that's near his home town in Fort Worth, Texas, where he attended Marcus High. Before Brooks entered the transfer portal, he was positioned to contribute as a diverse linebacker inside the 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Brooks played in 11 games and recorded eight tackles and 1½ sacks, including a crucial sack against Florida that led toward the go-ahead touchdown in LSU's 42-28 win over the Gators in Tiger Stadium. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Sophomore linebacker Marcel Brooks entered the NCAA player transfer portal Friday, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Advocate, potentially removing one of LSU's most athletic players from the team. LSU expected Brooks, who showed flashes of potential last season, to contribute as a linebacker and help lead its pass rush. Brooks' decision was first reported by 247Sports. Reasons for the move are not yet known. Brooks had emerged as one of the most promising young players on LSU's defense, which switched to a 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Last season, Brooks recorded eight tackles, 1½ tackles for loss and 1½ sacks.

All four of LSU's regular starting linebackers last year - K'Lavon Chaisson, Michael Divinity, Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen - left for the NFL, making Brooks a possible successor after he moved to linebacker before spring practice. "As we all know, he's very fast," coach Ed Orgeron said in March, "and once he catches onto the scheme, I think he's going to be an excellent linebacker." Brooks, who's listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, arrived at LSU last year as a five-star recruit out of Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas, where he played outside linebacker, safety and wide receiver. - Baton Rouge Advocate
