Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson - who started most of last season for the Huskers - will be "limited" in NU's upcoming spring camp, coach Matt Rhule said Monday. Thompson is recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder after passing for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. "We're hoping he'll able to throw, but he'll be pretty limited," Rhule said. "And we'll err on the side of caution with all these guys, right? I don't see him being able to do very much other than potentially, at some point, being able to throw."Thompson has participated in parts of offseason conditioning, and is part of a large quarterback room that includes Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims and four more scholarship players in Chubba Purdy, Logan Smothe rs, Heinrich Haarberg and Richard Torres. Rhule said Monday that Purdy and Haarberg are among the fastest players on the team according to GPS tracking software. The 6-foot, 195-pound Thompson has a history of injuries - and playing through them. At Texa s, he toiled through a broken throwing thumb that didn't fully heal until summer 2022 surgery. During the 2022 season, he suffered elbow nerve damage that kept him out of 2½ games. The shoulder was its own problem. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska has signed Matt Rhule to an eight-year contract to be the Cornhuskers' next football coach, the school announced Saturday. The 47-year-old Rhule has been out of work for less than two months since getting fired by the Carolina Panthers. One of e ight Football Bowl Subdivision programs with at least 900 wins but more than 20 years removed from its 1990s heyday, Nebraska is pinning its hopes on Rhule to recreate his success at his previous two college stops. Rhule took over struggling programs at Temple and Baylor and built them into conference contenders in three years. He was 11-27 with Carolina and left with about $40 million remaining on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020. The contract made Rhule the sixth-highe st paid coach in the NFL when he signed in 2020, according to Forbes. Nebraska did not release terms of Rhule's contract. He will be introduced at a news conference Monday. - AP College Football

Casey Thompson threw for three touchdowns, and Nebraska ruined Iowa's chance to clinch the Big Ten West Division title outright with a 24-17 win on Friday. The Huskers (4-8, 3-6 Big Ten) snapped a five-game losing streak, and broke a seven-game losing st reak to the Hawkeyes (7-5, 5-4). Iowa had its four-game winning streak snapped. Thompson threw touchdown passes of 87 and 18 yards to Trey Palmer in the first half and a 14-yarder to Marcus Washington in the third quarter as Nebraska built a 24-0 lead. I owa had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes, getting the ball twice in the last 3:20 after closing to within 24-17 on a 45-yard field goal by Drew Stevens. But backup quarterback Alex Padilla threw incomplete on fourth down on the first posse ssion. Nebraska linebacker Chris Kolarevic's interception with 42 seconds left completed the Huskers' win.The Hawkeyes need losses by Purdue and Illinois on Saturday to have a chance at back-to-back West Division titles. Casey Thompson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Nebraska beat a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for the first time in 364 days with a 35-21 victory over Indiana on Saturday night. Thompson, benched for a series in the first half and sh aken up on a big hit in the third quarter, threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Trey Palmer early in the fourth to break a 21-all tie and followed with a 1-yard run to give the Cornhuskers a two-score cushion. The win ended a nine-game losing streak against Bowl Subdivision opponents - the Huskers' previous one was against Northwestern on October 2, 2021 - and was Mickey Joseph's first since he was named interim head coach following the firing of Scott Frost on Sept. 11. The Huskers (2-3, 1-1 Big Ten) brok e open the game in the fourth quarter as Thompson came through with big plays during what had been an up-and-down performance. Palmer had a couple steps on Phillip Dunnam as he ran his post pattern on a third-and-9 and caught the ball in stride for a 28- 21 lead with 13:43 left. The play gave Palmer the first 100-yard receiving game of his career. The fourth-year player, who transferred from LSU after last season, finished with eight catches for 157 yards. After Indiana (3-2, 1-1) went three-and-ou t, Thompson led a 12-play, 54-yard drive that chewed more than six minutes off the clock. He completed three short passes and handed off to Anthony Grant seven times for 31 yards before he ran in for the final margin. Grant finished with 136 yards on 32 carries. Thompson gave the Huskers a scare in the third quarter when he held his right shoulder area after James Head Jr. put a big hit on him. Chubba Purdy, whose fumble in the end zone led to an Indiana touchdown in the first half, took over for one pl ay on the next series and then Thompson returned. Thompson was 18 of 27 for 270 yards with an interception to go with his two TD passes. Indiana's Connor Bazelak was 22 of 44 for 223 yards with a touchdown and interception. The teams combined for 23 pena lties for 202 yards, one of the most flag-filled FBS games of the season. - Nebraska/AP College Football

Nebraska fired Scott Frost on Sunday, the situation so dire in the once-proud football program that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before the coach's contract buyout would have been cut in half. The Cornhuskers lost 45-42 t o Georgia Southern as a three-touchdown favorite at home Saturday night, and the student section chanted “Fire Frost" at the end of the game. Frost was 16-31 three games into his fifth season, and his .340 winning percentage was second-worst among Nebr aska coaches who lasted more than four years. Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season. The Huskers play No. 6 Oklahoma at home this week.Joseph, 54, is the first Black head coach at Nebraska in any spo rt and among four new members of the staff this season. Like Frost, he is a former Nebraska quarterback, having played from 1988-91. "Earlier today I met with Coach Frost and informed him we were making a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately," Alberts said in a statement. "Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska football program both as a quarterback and a head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication. After the disappointing start to our season, I decided the best path forward for our program was to make a change in our head coaching position." Joseph returned to Nebraska as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator after coaching receivers at LSU from 2017-21. He also was LSU's assistant head coach his last two seasons there. Alberts made a surprising move last November when he announced he would bring back Frost after what turned out to be a 3-9 season. Frost fired four offensive assistants, had his pay cut from $5 million to $4 millio n and agreed to having his buyout drop from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct. 1. - AP College Football

All of the pieces were there for Nebraska's offense early in the game against Northwestern. A clean pocket? Check. Quick, accurate passes from Casey Thompson? Check. Tough yards on the ground when they needed it? Check. But, the challenge in all of those arenas is doing it consistently for all four quarters, something that failed Nebraska's offense in a 31-28 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. Head coach Scott Frost turned over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, and a pass-heavy o pening drive might have been the result of Whipple's typical offensive system. However, second-half struggles led to an interesting response from Frost after the game. "I think we're going to have to learn as an offensive staff that you have to be a litt le creative in this league," Frost said. "So, we have some things that we can work on. I thought we did a lot of good things, but it's got to be more of a complete game."In the run-heavy Big Ten, creativity can mean finding the right moments to po und the rock and the right moments to air it out. When the pocket held up, Thompson showcased the arm talent that helped him land NU's starting job in the offseason. Thompson completed eight passes to Trey Palmer and six to tight end Travis Vokolek, who would have played a big role in the second half if he wasn't forced from the game due to an injury. Thompson's pair of fourth-quarter interceptions were certainly game-changers, but so was a controversial fumble call on Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. The wideo ut appeared to have a knee down at the same time a Northwestern defender ripped the ball out, and a video review upheld the call of a fumble on the field. - Lincoln Journal Star

Casey Thompson will start as quarterback for Nebraska's season opener in Ireland, NU coach Scott Frost announced Thursday night on his monthly radio show. "Casey's going to be the guy," Frost said on the Huskers Radio Network while complimenting the othe r four scholarship QBs on the roster including backup Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers. Frost said he "wouldn't be surprised" if more than one plays. But it's the high-profile transfer from Texas who will get the first rep overseas against Northwestern. T hompson threw 24 touchdowns last season for the Longhorns. He's the most experienced QB on the roster, and he's had the edge since arriving for spring camp. His accuracy and velocity improved after a surgery on his hand this summer; Thompson played the l ast half of UT's season with torn ligaments. "There's no substitute for having played a lot of college football and there's been fewer mistakes from him," Frost said. "It really was a big jump too from spring ball to fall and I think that thumb was proba bly bothering him worse than he let on. He's throwing it way better now in fall. He threw it well in spring but he's got a lot of zip on it now." - Lincoln Journal Star

Thompson is the most notable transfer Nebraska has added so far because of the position he plays. He started 10 games for the Longhorns last year and led the Big 12 in touchdown passes with 24. He'll be considered the favorite to win NU's starting quarte rback job under new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. He'll be on campus for this semester. - Lincoln Journal Star
