Utah Utes tight end Brant Kuithe will be returning once again. Kuithe announced on social media Monday morning that he will play for the Utes in 2023 instead of entering his name in April's NFL draft. The news comes as Kuithe, Utah's most important recei ving target, played in just four games in 2022 after he tore his ACL Sept. 24 against Arizona State.Kuithe returned to the Utes in 2022 after it appeared he could have been a relatively high draft pick last spring. The 2023 season will be Kuithe's fifth as a Ute. A native of Katy, Texas, the 6-foot-2, 219-pounder was named to the All-Pac-12 second team for three consecutive seasons from 2019-2021 before getting hurt this fall. In his career, Kuithe has tallied 148 receptions for 1,882 yards with 16 touchdowns. - Deseret News

When Brant Kuithe tore his right ACL on Sept. 25 at Arizona State, the assumption was the three-time All-Pac-12 tight end's college career was over. After all, he is a fifth-year senior who has already flirted with leaving for the NFL twice, but the fact that Kuithe only played four games this season and has never used a redshirt in his career left the door open for a return in 2023. Kuithe is with the Utes this week at the Rose Bowl, and on Saturday morning at media day, the door for his return remaine d open. "I still have a little bit of time, no rush right now," Kuithe said with a smile.Pressed on whether or not he has made a decision and just isn't ready to announce it publicly, the Katy, Texas, native indicated that was indeed the case. Kui the, Cam Rising, Devaughn Vele, Micah Bernard, and Thomas Yassmin are among the key Utes whose decisions on their respective futures will help shape what the 2023 season could look like. If, at a minimum, Rising and Kuithe return, the Utes would likely b e looked upon as a top-15 team to open the season and among the favorites to win the Pac-12 for a third consecutive season. College underclassmen have until Jan. 16 to file declaration papers with the NFL seeking special eligibility for the draft, which is scheduled for April 27-29. - Salt Lake Tribune

Despite the season-ending ACL tear he suffered last Saturday in the Utah Utes' win over the Arizona State Sun Devils, tight end Brant Kuithe made his weekly appearance on the "Bill Riley Show" in Salt Lake City by phone on Tuesday, and naturally the inju ry was the topic of conversation. "I'm doing all right," Kuithe said at the top, noting that swelling in his knee has to go down before the surgery to repair it can take place. Despite suffering a leg injury in high school, Kuithe said this is the first time he will have to undergo surgery. "It's all new to me, but trying to embrace it as much as I can and trying to stay positive," he said. "It's really the only thing I can do at this moment." Kuithe said that on the play in which he got injured (the la st of the first quarter), he made the catch and in an attempt to make the ASU defender miss, he tried to spin.As soon as he started to make a cut, he heard a pop. In a lighthearted moment, he said, "I still made him miss, which I guess I could say that I made someone miss with a torn ACL." Nevertheless, he knew something had happened and he tried to get to the sideline as soon as he could. Kuithe said that in a sense, the fact that he can't do anything to change what happened is helping him have a positive outlook about the recovery road ahead. "I kind of have a new perspective on football right now and trying to figure out what I need to do and how I can help this team without being on the field," he said. "Everything's all new and trying to ta ke it one step at a time." He also said he realized quickly that as unfortunate as it is, "I'm alive, you know? Like, I can't sit there and try to think that this is the end of the world, 'cause it's not. "Yeah, I'm missing a season, whatever. I'm not su re what's going to happen down the road (in terms of staying in school or trying to go to the NFL), but at least I'm still alive and I'm breathin' and I still have an opportunity to go play again. It's just another bump in the road, some adversity I have to go through." - Deseret News

Kyle Whittingham's worst fears from Saturday night have been confirmed. The University of Utah football coach on Monday morning announced that senior tight end Brant Kuithe will miss the remainder of the season with a lower leg injury. "That's a big blow to our offense," Whittingham said. "He was a huge part of what we do offensively. But we'll have to have guys step up and and pick up the slack." Whittingham added that if Kuithe wants to return next season, that option is available to him.Junior tight end Thomas Yassmin, who barely started playing American football in 2018, "will take most of the reps that would be typically for Brandt." On the final play of the first quarter, Kuithe came up gimpy after hauling in his second catch of the night, an 11-yard strike from Rising down to the Utah 28-yard line. The three-time All-Pac-12 tight end was helped to the injury tent, where he spent 20 minutes of real time. He peeked his head out of the tent with 5:14 to play in the first half without his sh oulder pads and a towel over his head. Kuithe eventually emerged from the tent with his right knee wrapped in ice before taking crutches and having a seat on the bench. It is unlikely, but Kuithe does have the option to return for a sixth year in 2023 si nce this injury happened in his fourth game and he has not taken a redshirt during his career. - Salt Lake Tribune

Brant Kuithe is listed as a tight end, and has been an All-Pac-12 selection at the position three times - most recently in 2021 before opting to return this fall as a senior. That said, anyone watching Kuithe the last few years knows that pigeonholing hi m as a tight end isn't really fair given his versatility, a notion Whittingham is on board with. "He's a hybrid, he'll be all over the place," Whittingham said. "To say he is strictly a tight end is a false statement. He's going to be in a lot of differe nt situations, a lot of different locations for us." Kuithe is coming off 50 catches for 611 yards and six touchdowns, not all of it coming at tight end. He can line up out of the slot, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. More than a couple of ti mes, Utah went to Kuithe on a jet sweep. Kuithe is the most dangerous, most versatile weapon Cam Rising has at his disposal this season. - Salt Lake Tribune

No one would have batted an eyelash if Brant Kuithe opted to leave the University of Utah following the 2020 season. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound tight end had a team-best 25 catches for 236 yards, while leading all Pac-12 tight ends in receptions per game (5 .0). He has led the team in catches among tight ends in each of his three seasons, the last two of which have yielded All-Pac-12 second-team honors. In 33 career games, Kuithe has 79 catches for 1,065 yards and seven touchdowns. Kuithe has clearly been o n an NFL track for at least the two seasons, so no, no one would have even shrugged if Kuithe opted against one more college season and instead entered the NFL draft. The thing is, a truncated, COVID-impacted, five-game season last fall was not enough fo r Kuithe to go out on, so he didn't. "I had a decent season, but we only won three games," Kuithe said during spring practice in early April, roughly three months after the Katy, Texas, native announced on New Year's Day that he would return for the 2021 season. "We haven't won a Pac-12 championship. That's most important goal. Every single year, we fall short of it. I came here to win that." - Salt Lake Tribune

Whoever winds up as the starting quarterback at the University of Utah, whether it be Charlie Brewer, Cameron Rising, or Ja'Quinden Jackson, there is some question right now as to who that person will throw to this fall. The Utes are thin at wide receive r, a problem coach Kyle Whittingham has addressed numerous times in the last two months in the wake of Bryan Thompson and Samson Nacua transferring. Whittingham has made clear he will hit the NCAA Transfer Portal in the time between spring practice endin g and fall camp beginning, so for now, wide receiver is a significant question mark for the program. As far as pass-catching options go, that's the bad news. The good news, though, is two-folded. One, Utah likes to utilize the tight end position. Two, th ere are no questions at Utah about tight ends like there are about wide receivers.Two-time All-Pac-12 tight end Brant Kuithe is back as a junior. Another veteran pass-catching option returns in junior Cole Fotheringham, and still, there is a third legitimate option in junior Dalton Kincaid, an FCS All-American as a sophomore in 2019 at the University of San Diego. "We have playmakers," Kuithe said this week a Zoom call with reporters. "Dalton is doing well this spring and I think next year, it's going to be a different story. He wasn't involved much last year, and only getting five games, the play was a little erratic. Getting a full slate of games, I think the tight end group is going to be really solid." - Salt Lake Tribune

The bad news for the University of Utah is that once mandatory summer activities and training camp begin, coaches still need to figure out who the starting quarterback will be. The good news is, whether it's South Carolina graduate transfer Jake Bentley or redshirt sophomore Cameron Rising, that signal caller is going to have more than a fair amount of pass-catching options. Entering the 2020 season, the Utes return seven players who caught at least 10 passes last season. Chief among them is junior tigh t end Brant Kuithe, whose emergence in the second half of the season was a revelation. His 34 catches for 602 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore mark him as one of, if not the top returning tight end in the Pac-12. Utah possesses a second starting-cal iber tight end thanks to junior Cole Fotheringham (16 catches, 156 yards, 1 TD). - Salt Lake Tribune
