Hank Bachmeier came off the bench to throw for three touchdowns in his Wake Forest debut and Taylor Morin returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown and picked up 100 receiving yards as the Demon Deacons pulled away to beat North Carolina A&T 45-13 in Thur sday night's season opener. Running back Demond Claiborne rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown to help Wake Forest win its fourth straight season opener. Bachmeier, a former starter for Boise State and Louisiana Tech, finished 18-of-28 for 263 yards. Mic hael Kern drew the starting assignment at quarterback for Wake Forest, a decision revealed at game time.Kenji Christian scored a touchdown and ran for 121 yards for the Aggies. N.C. A&T quarterback Kevin White was 10-of-16 for 116 yards. Andrew Br own hit two field goals, including a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter. Four months after he announced he was transferring away from Boise State, Hank Bachmeier has landed at Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs, which play in Conference USA, went 3-9 last season, the first under head coach Sonny Cumbie. Its starting quarterback, fr eshman Landry Lyddy, entered the transfer portal just over a week ago. "I wanted to play in the Air Raid and in a pass-friendly offense," Bachmeier told ESPN. "I think Coach Cumbie and his track record are a great fit. It's an offense that any quarterbac k would want to play in." As many remember, Bachmeier hit the transfer portal after four treacherous games to start his senior season.The Broncos' four-year starting quarterback turned the ball over three times in the opener against Oregon State a nd was benched for Taylen Green. Then a few weeks later, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound former four-star recruit completed less than 40% of his passes in an embarrassing loss at UTEP. Offensive coordinator Tim Plough was fired the next day and Bachmeier was in the transfer portal not long after. Former Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier is heading to the Bayou State to finish his college football career. Bachmeier told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Wednesday that he's going to Louisiana Tech, a Conference USA school. He has two years of eligibility remaining. The four-year starter for the Broncos announced he was transferring last September, not long after Boise State lost to major underdog UTEP and offensive coordinator Tim Plough was fired.PM Bachmeier said he picked the program in Ruston, Louisiana, in part because of head coach Sonny Cumbie's Air Raid scheme on offense. The system routinely produced quarterbacks who passed for more than 4,000 yards a season when he was the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech. The native of Murrieta, Cal ifornia, won the starting job all four years he was at Boise State. He went 20-9 as the starter and ranks in the top 10 in program history in career passing yards (6,605, No. 7) and touchdown passes (41, No. 7). Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 is Boise State's Hank Bachmeier: He was a three-year starter for the Broncos who decided in September t his season to move on. He is most definitely not a dual-threat guy. Bachmeier finished his time at Boise with 6,605 passing yards and 41 TDs but also 19 interceptions from 2019-22. He battled through injuries and played behind an underperforming offensiv e line. Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier intends to transfer with the Broncos off to a disappointing 2-2 start. A spokesman for Boise State confirmed Tuesday that Bachmeier has filed paperwork to initiate the process of transferring. Bachmeier told ESPN he wants to find a situation that will allow him to win games and prepare for the NFL. Bachmeier will have two years of eligibility remaining. Boise State coach Andy Avalos said Tuesday that Taylen Green will be the starting quarterback for Friday's game a gainst San Diego State.Bachmeier has played in 29 career games at Boise State. His best season was last year, when he threw for 3,079 yards and 20 touchdowns. Bachmeier has started all four games this season for the Broncos, but he had seen some o f his playing time taken by Green. Bachmeier was just 13 of 34 passing for 93 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos' loss to UTEP last Friday. Boise State fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough on Saturday and replaced him with former college and NFL head coach Dirk Koetter for the rest of the season. Boise State head coach Andy Avalos announced the change after the Broncos were stunned in a 27 -10 loss to UTEP on Friday night. Long known for its offensive ingenuity and scoring points, the Broncos (2-2) have struggled on that side of the ball, even in their two victories. Koetter has been working as an analyst for the Broncos. "This was a diffi cult decision, but I believe it is in the best interest of our program," Avalos said. "Our team goals are still in front of us and we are focused on working to accomplish them. Tim is a good football coach and I have no doubt he will continue to positive ly impact the young men he works with in the future." Koetter was Boise State's head coach from 1998-2000 and was 26-10 in his tenure with the Broncos.His time at Boise State set the stage for the growth of the program that took place first under Dan Hawkins and then with Chris Petersen in charge. Koetter left Boise State for Arizona State where he was the head coach for six seasons and led the Sun Devils to four bowl appearances. Koetter went on to a long career in the NFL that included three se asons as the head coach in Tampa Bay where the Bucs went 19-29. He was also an offensive coordinator with Jacksonville, Atlanta twice and Tampa Bay. Hank Bachmeier bounced back after he was benched a week earlier, throwing three touchdown passes to lead Boise State to a 31-14 victory over New Mexico on Friday night. Latrell Caples caught two of those scores for Boise State (1-1, 1-0 Mountain West). A shton Jeanty and George Holani combined for 139 yards on 32 carries for the Broncos. The Boise State defense held the Lobos (1-1, 0-1) to 123 total yards, with more than half of that coming on Geordon Porter's 69-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarte r. Through three quarters, New Mexico had 48 total yards. The Broncos led 10-0 at halftime before scoring three touchdowns in the second half, including one on a blocked punt. Wyoming is expecting a down year this season, but they are looking forward to good play at quarterback. Senior Hank bachmeier is consistent and plays with poise. He is one of only five returning MW signal-callers that started the majority of their team's games last season. Bachmeier didn't put up as gaudy of numbers as Utah State's Logan Bonner or Fresno State's Jake Haener, who led top-15 passing attacks last season, but his third year as a starter was plenty productive. Ten Boise State football student-athletes were unveiled on the Shrine Bowl 1000, the East-West Shrine Bowl's comprehensive list of the top-1000 all-star game eligible players, it was announced Wednesday. Boise State's 10 selections were the most among al l institutions in the Mountain West. Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier has met quite of few of his sports idols during his college career. Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, who has spoken to the team twice during Bachmeier's career, and Bo Jackson top his list, but he said meeting Denver Bron cos quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday ranks right up there. "It was a big honor for all of us quarterbacks to speak to him and be around a true professional," Bachmeier told the Idaho Statesman. "I was pretty star-struck. I took a lot of his words to heart, and the biggest thing I took away was how intentional and deliberate he was in everything he did." Wilson - a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, who traded him to Denver in March - was in Boise for an event wit h Alaska Airlines.Between appearances, he took time to meet with Boise State's quarterbacks and speak to a group of players and coaches. George Holani rushed for 102 yards, Hank Bachmeier passed for 225 yards, and the Boise State defense forced a late turnover to hold off upset-minded Wyoming 23-13 Friday night. Boise State continued its mastery of Wyoming, winning its fifth straight and 15th out of 16 games in the series. Wyoming (5-5, 1-5 Mountain West) lost its fifth game out of its last six after a 4-0 start. The Broncos (6-4, 4-2) won for only the second time at home this season, but it wasn't easy. The Broncos lost that snow-filled game in overtime and had to wait three years to get their revenge, but never trailed and took advantage of a sloppy night by the Bulldogs (7-3, 4-2). "Had a pretty good idea that they w ere going to be able to do this today because of how they worked throughout the week, their mindset, how they focused when we got down here," Boise State coach Andy Avalos said. "Nobody wavered from the plan." George Holani rushed for 117 yards on 21 car ries. Jonah Dalmas matched his career best with four field goals.Dalmas had a fifth field goal taken away when Fresno State was called for roughing the kicker. Three plays later. Bachmeier threw a 10-yard TD to Khalil Shakir. It was Boise State's defense, however, that had everyone buzzing after the game. "That was everything," Dalmas said. Hank Bachmeier threw for 172 yards and Boise State forced four turnovers in a 26-17 upset victory over No. 10 BYU on Saturday. Cyrus Habibi-Likio ran for a season-high 75 yards and a touchdown, and Andrew Van Buren added a season-high 60 yards and a touc hdown to help the Broncos (3-3) snap a two-game losing streak in the series. The Broncos held the Cougars (5-1) to a single touchdown over the final three quarters after blowing second-half leads in losses to UCF and Nevada. "We finally finished the seco nd half," Bachmeier said. "I think we've always been capable of doing it." Hank Bachmeier threw for two touchdowns, Boise State's defense frustrated Utah State and the Broncos won their 22nd-straight conference opener with a 27-3 win over the Aggies on Saturday. The back-breaker was a 3-yard pass from Bachmeier to Scott Matlock with 5:09 to play. That capped a 15-yard drive after a critical fumble by Utah State quarterback Andrew Peasley. Boise State (1-1) gave first-year coach Andy Avalos his first win and the program's 20th straight home opening victory, playing in front of a capacity crowd for the first time since 2019. While much of the country was focused on the third day of the NFL Draft on Saturday, the Boise State football team took some time to celebrate a local hero. Several Boise State players, including quarterback Hank Bachmeier, joined a car parade at Julia D avis Park put on by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to honor 2021 Idaho Child of the Year Jaleel Dodd. Dodd, 9, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia last July, and COVID-19 made his treatment even more difficult, as only one parent wa s allowed to be with him during treatment and no other visitors were allowed.He's a huge fan of the Broncos, and after they met on Saturday, Bachmeier is now Dodd's biggest fan. "It was just an honor to go out there and see him and how tough he is , and it just puts into perspective to be grateful for what you have," Bachmeier told reporters on Sunday. "He's just fighting and it was awesome to see a smile on his face." Bachmeier said he caught a ride to the park with fellow quarterback Cade Fenneg an, and the duo presented Dodd with some Boise State gear, including a hat and poster. The last time Boise State sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier started back-to-back weeks was in early October 2019, when he was emerging as a young star. He's expected to do that again Saturday - 13 months later - and against the same opponent that dera iled his 2019 season: Hawaii. Bachmeier missed the Air Force win and BYU loss this season after testing positive for COVID-19, he told the media Tuesday. He returned last week to help the Broncos (3-1 overall, 3-0 Mountain West) beat Colorado State. "I c an't control injuries. I can't control a global pandemic," Bachmeier said. "They're all things that are kind of out of my sphere of control. It stinks, but they're things that I can't control. But I can control how prepared I am."Bachmeier went 6- 0 as the starter last season before he was injured in the regular-season win against Hawaii. He missed the loss to BYU, returned to beat San Jose State and got injured again, then missed the final four regular-season games and the Mountain West title gam e against Hawaii. Hank Bachmeier threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, George Holani rushed for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Boise State defeated Utah State 42-13 Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Boise State won its home opener for the 11 th straight time and hasn’t dropped a conference opener since 1999. New offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said improving Bachmeier's footwork will help him deliver passes on time, which will lead to fewer collisions. "He was a little all over the map last year," Kiesau told reporters. "How you play the game at quarterbac k is getting in a rhythm so you don't have to think about some of those fundamentals and just go play the game with your eyes downfield." Bachmeier spent plenty of time this offseason working on his own to make sure each step in his drop matches the timi ng of the routes his receivers are running. "All your footwork times up with a specific route concept," Bachmeier said. "Am I too slow? Am I too fast? Am I double hitching? We've been working on all those things to get the timing down."Avoiding a sophomore slump has been on the forefront of Bachmeier's mind, but spring ball was canceled and offseason workouts were limited because of COVID-19, which left him with a little more free time than usual. Quarterback Hank Bachmeier and running back George Holani were prized recruits in the Boise State football team's 2019 class, and neither has disappointed on the field. Despite the cancellation of spring sports in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said Monday that programs in the conference will be fine for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends June 30. But if there 's no football, he said the story changes dramatically. "If there's no college football this fall, there's very little likelihood there will be any other sports because 85% of revenue derived in college athletics comes from the sport of football," Thomps on said in a video interview released by the Mountain West.In 2018-19, Boise State football generated almost half of the $50,599,483 collected by the entire athletic department. Thompson hinted that Mountain West media days may be held in a virtua l format in July, but he said the date could get pushed back depending on when, or if, football season begins. He also said scheduling is going to be a challenge, as Group of Five conferences compete with the obligations CBS and Fox already have to the N FL and Power Five college football games. "There's a lot of games that might be in a very condensed fall, if we're playing football in the fall," he said. Chase Cord threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns in relief of injured starter Hank Bachmeier and No. 14 Boise State beat Hawaii 59-37 on Saturday night. The Broncos (6-0, 3-0 Mountain West) remained perfect at home against the Rainbow Warriors in seve n meetings, despite losing Bachmeier early in the second quarter when he was scrambling for a first down and spun to elude oncoming linebacker Kana'i Picanco. Bachmeier absorbed a hit in his lower back and promptly fumbled. He walked gingerly off the fie ld with the aid of staff trainers before going to the locker room. In the second half, he returned to the sidelines in street clothes.The nature and extent of Bachmeier's injury was not disclosed by the school. Hawaii (4-2, 1-1), which entered the game with the Mountain West's top passing offense and fourth nationally, fell behind early and never seemed to have an answer defensively for any of the three quarterbacks Boise State played. Boise State was looking for a fast start against UNLV, especially coming off a bye week. And, while second-half defense had been the key to the No. 16 Broncos' previous four wins, their first-half defensive work was near perfect Saturday. Hank Bachmeier threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns and Boise State rode a strong defensive effort to a 38-13 win over UNLV. "The whole mindset coming off the bye was how are we going to start fast," said Boise State coach Bryan Harsin, whose team led 17-0 at halftim e. "What's our mindset Friday, Saturday night, our guys came ready to play. It was a really solid defensive performance."Khalil Shaker caught seven passes for 111 yards and a TD, John Hightower had four catches for 105 yards, including a 76-yard t ouchdown reception that make it 14-0 with 13:38 left until halftime.
