The Aztecs lose all three starters - Keshawn Banks, Jonah and Justus Tavai - on the defensive line, so that is the biggest area of need for next season. At linebacker, SDSU loses starter Caden McDonald and potentially Michael Shawcroft, the team's tackle leader, who has not yet decided if he will return for his "COVID year" of eligibility. The Aztecs have only one senior on the offensive line - center Alama Uluave - but they are young at the position and could use an experienced transfer or two to improve themselves there.

At wide receiver, SDSU loses starter Tyrell Shavers and potentially Jesse Matthews, who, like Shawcroft, has a "COVID year" of eligibility remaining. Matthews has said he doesn't plan to make a decision until after the season. Four seniors - quarterback Jalen Mayden, safety Cedarious Barfield, cornerback Dallas Branch and kicker/punter Jack Browning - indicated in recent weeks that they would be returning to use their COVID year. - San Diego Union Tribune

  10/28/22 - K Jack BrowningrSr/2024, San Diego State, 5-11, 190 (DS#4 K) + More +

San Diego State kicker Jack Browning is well positioned this year to set a school record for field goals in a season. Browning is 12-for-13 on field goal attempts through seven games, 10 away from SDSU's single-season record with as many as seven games remaining. That's good, and it's bad. "You're sitting there kicking field goals, and you're going, "Great job, Jack," SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said. "But let's get it in the end zone." Touchdowns, not field goals. That's the objective.

The Aztecs have struggled mightily getting the ball into the end zone. SDSU has just 10 offensive touchdowns this season, and four of them came in a 38-7 win over FCS opponent Idaho State. That means the Aztecs have averaged but one offensive touchdown a game against six FBS opponents this season. They are averaging 19.14 points a game, which is tied for 115th in the nation (out of 131 teams). - San Diego Union Tribune

Jack Browning kicked three field goals, including the go-ahead 26-yarder with 7 seconds to play, and San Diego State beat Hawaii 16-14 Saturday night. Dedrick Parson scored on a 22-yard run to cap a seven-play, 80-yard drive and give give Hawaii its first lead of the game at 14-13 with 1:19 to play and, after the ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, the Aztecs took possession at their own 35. Jalen Mayden was 5-for-5 passing for 50 yards as San Diego State quickly moved to the Hawaii 7 and then called timeout to set up for Browning's winner.

Browning made a 45-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the second quarter for San Diego State (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) and Mayden threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Byrd that made it 10-0 with 10:58 remaining in the third. Hawaii (1-5, 0-1) answered less than 3 minutes later when Brayden Schager hit Zion Bowens - who finished with nine receptions for 108 yards - for a 66-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Browning made a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter that gave the Aztecs a 13-7 lead. Mayden finished 24-of-36 passing for 322 yards. - San Diego State/AP College Football
