Quincy Crittendon scored on a 25-yard run in the second overtime and Samford defeated Mercer 50-44 on Saturday for the Bulldogs' first outright conference title in 86 years. No. 9 FCS Samford's 10-1 record matches the 1991 team for the best regular-seaso n record in school history. The Bulldogs, who clinched at least a tie for the SoCon title last week, last won an outright conference championship in 1936 when then-Howard College won the Dixie Conference with a 5-3-1 record. After Samford (8-0 Southern C onference) and Mercer (No. 16 FCS, 8-4, 5-3) scored touchdowns on their first overtime possessions, Mercer missed a field goal to open the second overtime. Crittendon ended it on the second play of Samford's possession. Samford's Michael Hiers completed 43 of 55 passes for 454 yards with four touchdowns. Fred Payton was 30-of-51 passing for 514 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Mercer. NOV 14 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michael Hiers, Jr, QB, Samford, Birmingham, Ala.,...Samford quarterback Michael Hiers claimed his fifth weekly honor of the season and second straight after accounting for five touchdowns and 354 yards of total offense in the Bulldogs' 35-24 win over No. 12/11 Chattanooga on Saturday. The junior from Birmingham, Alabama, improved upon his FCS-best completion percentage by going 37-for-47 (78.7 percent) for 353 yards and four touchdowns through the air, completi ng scoring passes of 22, 16, 5 and 80 yards on the day. Hiers also called his own number for a 1-yard TD run. Samford, which clinched at least a share of its first SoCon title since 2013 and the league's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, was named the A thlon FCS Team of the Week and Stats Perform FedEx Ground FCS National Team of the Week on Monday. Michael Hiers threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score and Samford won the Southern Conference title with a 35-24 victory over Chattanooga on Saturday in a match-up between ranked teams. Samford (9-1, 7-0 Southern Conference), ranked ninth in the FCS coaches poll, collected its first title since 2013 and will look to sweep the conference schedule in its regular-season finale against Mercer next Saturday.Hiers threw three touchdown passes to Kendall Watson and also had a 1-yard TD run as Sa mford built a 28-7 lead late in the second quarter. Hiers tossed an 80-yard TD pass to D.J. Rias that made it 35-17 early in the third. Hiers was 37-of-47 passing for 353 yards. Rias made four catches for 100 yards. Chattanooga had just two possessions i n the fourth quarter that led to a punt and missed field goal. The Bulldogs kept the ball for the last eight minutes of the game. Ailym Ford and Preston Hutchinson each ran in for scores from short yardage in the third quarter for 12th-ranked Chattanooga (7-3, 5-2 Southern Conference). Michael Hiers threw a career-high four touchdowns passes and Samford overcame a slow start to defeat VMI 34-15 on homecoming Saturday, giving coach Chris Hatcher his school-record 48th victory. Chandler Smith had 10 catches for 134 yards with two touchdo wns and Jaylan Thomas added 97 yards rushing, including a 32-yard score for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs (8-1, 6-0 Southern Conference), ranked No. 10 in the FCS coaches poll, trailed 12-7 at halftime.In the third quarter, Hiers threw for touchdowns of 49 yards to Smith for a 14-12 advantage and later 70 yards to Kendall Watson for a 20-15 lead. Hiers added a second TD connection with Smith in the fourth quarter. Thomas capped the scoring with his 32-yard dash. Hiers finished with 322 yards passing on 30 completions in 38 attempts. Hiers, who had separate consecutive completion streaks of 11, 14 and 15 passes in the game, completed 88.2 percent of his passes on the day, good for fifth-best by an FCS player this season, while his 45 completions are the most for an NCAA Division I quarterback this year. Michael Hiers passed for 446 yards and four touchdowns and added 2-yard scoring run to help Samford beat East Tennessee State 55-45 Saturday night. Hiers completed 45 of 51 passes with no interceptions and finished with 50 yards rushing on 13 carries. The junior from Birmingham, Alabama, connected on 80 percent of his passes on the day, going 24-for-30 for 292 yards and four touchdowns. Hiers connected for scoring strikes with four different receivers, throwing for TDs of 20 and 34 yards in the first quarter before adding a 60- yard score in the third and a 15-yard TD pass in the fourth. Michael Hiers threw for two touchdowns, and Samford's defense kept Wofford in check for a 28-14 win on Saturday, the 16th-straight loss for the Terriers. It was a disappointing debut for Wofford head coach Shawn Watson, who stepped up from offensive coor dinator after Josh Conklin resigned on Thursday. The Bulldogs (5-1, 3-0 Southern Conference) limited the Terriers (0-6, 0-3) to 36 yards in the first half and took a 14-0 lead on Jay Stanton's 1-yard run and a 6-yard reception by Kendall Watson. Those dr ives only covered 48 and 47 yards, respectively.Hiers connected with D.J. Rias for a 54-yard score in the third quarter and Jaylan Thomas burst 37 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-7. Hiers was 31 of 42 for 251 yards. Watson had 10 receptions fo r 83 yards. Jimmy Weirick threw for a touchdown pass and Kyle Parson ran for one for Wofford. Conklin took his first two Terrier teams to the playoffs and was Southern Conference coach of the year after the second in 2019. Hiers completed 24 of 30 passes with an interception for Samford (3-1) in a Southern Conference opener. Hiers opened the scorin g with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Judd Cockett midway through the first quarter. The junior transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College, playing in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, went 18-for-24 through the air, completing 75 percent of his passes for 289 yards and turning in a pass efficiency of 231.15. Hier s had touchdown tosses of 28, 6, 15 and 31 yards, with the latter two coming in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs rallied from a three-point deficit at the end of the third quarter. Michael Hiers threw for four touchdowns in his Samford debut and the Bulldogs upset FCS power Kennesaw State 27-17 in a season opener for both teams Thursday night. Hiers, a junior college transfer, was 18-of-24 passing for 289 yards, completing two touc hdown passes each to Kendall Watson and Chandler Smith. Watson had nine catches for a career-high 187 yards. Hiers' two scores to Smith came in the fourth quarter, the final one a toss into the flat that the receiver turned into a 31-yard score with five minutes remaining and a 27-17 lead. Xavier Shepherd connected with Nykeem Farrow on a 72-yard pass play to the 7-yard line but was intercepted in the end zone by Kourtland Marsh with 3:41 left. Shepherd went over 1,000 rushing yards for his career but h ad just 64 yards on 35 carries with a score against the Bulldogs. The Owls fell in their first game since leaving the Big South, where they won three conference titles in seven years, including last season. They joined the Atlantic Sun this season. Both teams are headed for road games at ranked FBS teams on Sept. 10, Kennesaw State at No. 23-ranked Cincinnati and Samford at No. 3 Georgia. - AP College Football
