2022 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE THIRD TEAM: Quarterback - DJ Irons, Akron,...Irons, a team captain, became only the third Akron QB to earn All-MAC accolades with his selection to the all-league third team this fall. He joins James Washington and Charlie Frye, who garnered second-team all-conference honors in 2000 and 2005, respectively. Irons has started each of the 10 games he has appeared in for the Zips this season en route to throwing for 2,606 yards on the strength of a .668 completion percentage and 14 touchdowns, including 10 through the air.

Irons' 2,606 passing yards ranks as the eighth-best single-season effort in program history, while his 260.6 passing average stands as the fourth-best single-season mark. He has completed 25 or more passes in six of 10 games he has appeared, including a string of four straight for the Zips. He has completed 60 percent or more of his passes in seven of Akron's 11 games this season. Irons is rated eighth in the NCAA in completions per game (25.30), 19th in completion percentage (.668), 28th in passing yards per game (260.6) and 50th in passing yards (2,606), while ranking second in the MAC in completion percentage, passing yards and total offense (291.9) and sixth in overall passing (129.5). Additionally, Irons connected on a school-record 43 completions against Ohio on Oct. 8 finishing the game 43-of-54 for a career-high 418 yards passing. His 43 completions stand as the second-best single-game high for Division I this season and best the previous school-record mark of 37 set by Dalton Williams in 2012. - Akron Football

University of Akron football coach Joe Moorhead admits that he liked a lot of what he saw during spring practice, mostly because of his what he saw in his team's attitude. The offense may not have much of a problem buying what Moorhead is selling. His focus as a coach has come on that side of the ball and it's led to prolific scoring teams such as Oregon, where the Ducks averaged better than 33 points per game. Past success doesn't lead to future fortune, but there's reason to be hopeful. The Zips offense evolved through the course of last season, being the reason the team came close to pulling out a couple of close games. Still, that was then and players realize that and understand questions surround this year's team.

Here are the three primary ones for the UA offense: Can DJ Irons take the reins of the offense and hold them? Moorhead recruited Irons at another college, so if anyone but him is under center to start the season, it would be earthquake level shocking. Irons, at 6-foot-6, 215 pounds, has the size for the position. He also possesses the arm strength and legs to get out of sticky situations. He's a legitimate dual-threat quarterback. At times last season, he flashed at the position, but in eight appearances, he also took a beating leading to some issues. "I felt like I started not to have fun a little bit last year," he said. "Now, I feel like I'm getting my confidence back and I'm just ready to be on the offensive side of the ball and get in the end zone." - Akron Beacon Journal

Junior quarterback DJ Irons was one of the standouts on offense for the Blue Team with three touchdown passes - one apiece to sophomore Alex Adams, senior Shocky Jacques-Louis and sophomore Blake Hester. Irons, a returning quarterback who played for former Zips coach Tom Arth last season, completed 13-of-21 passes for 112 yards Saturday. "I felt like I played straight, but I could have done some things better," Irons said. "I will take this, listen and just add on and keep getting better every day." Adams hauled in a 30-yard dart by Irons for a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Blue Team a 10-3 lead. Irons connected with Jacques-Louis for a 5-yard touchdown to put the Blue Team ahead 17-10 four seconds before halftime.

Irons found Hester for a 25-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Blue Team a 24-17 advantage. "He started a little bit slow," Moorhead said of Irons. "There were some things early on that he either misread or held the ball a little bit long, but he collected himself from there. I thought the line held up and protected well and did a nice job run blocking. "We have got a pretty solid arsenal of receivers to get the ball to. He has got to be just like a great point guard, identify who to get the ball to and let those guys play with great speed in space." - Akron Beacon Journal
