  02/25/23 - QB J.J. McCarthyJr/2024, Michigan, 6-3, 219 (DS#4 QB) + More +

There is no quarterback controversy at Michigan heading into this season as J.J. McCarthy returns from leading the Wolverines to a 13-1 record last fall in his first year as full-time starter. By no means is McCarthy a finished product and will use spring practice to further develop his game under the tutelage of new Michigan quarterback coach Kirk Campbell, who was elevated to the role after one season as an offensive analyst. He replaces Matt Weiss, co-offensive coordinator/QB coach, fired last month amid an ongoing police investigation into alleged computer access crimes. Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy completed 65% of his attempts for 2,719 yards and 22 touchdowns, against five interceptions, last season. He also had 70 carries for 306 yards and five touchdowns. The good news for McCarthy is he actually gets to practice this spring after missing last year while rehabbing a labrum injury in his right (throwing) shoulder. He won the starting job following the second game of the season last fall after Cade McNamara, who helped lead the Wolverines to a 12-2 record that included a Big Ten title in 2021 and a College Football Playoff appearance, started Game 1.

McCarthy led Michigan to the program's first win at Ohio State since 2000, a second Big Ten title and another CFP appearance The junior-to-be completed 65% of his attempts for 2,719 yards and 22 touchdowns, against five interceptions, last season. He also had 70 carries for 306 yards and five touchdowns. "Tremendous physical ability and athletic ability and in every single way that you would want your quarterback," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday at a news conference. "The rare thing is that he would sacrifice anything for any player on this team. Personally, he's just so willing to do whatever is best for the team. I would follow him anywhere. Happily. I suggest that all players on our team do the same thing. He's just really, really good at it. "As far as anything you tell him, I mean, any coaching point that you give, he just he absorbs it and will make the correction immediately. It's tremendous." - Detroit News

The Wolverines' 11-0 mark in McCarthy's starts represents the most consecutive wins to begin a starting quarterback's career in school history. McCarthy has led the Wolverines while completing 65.3 percent of his passes (177-of-271) with 17 passing touchdowns to two interceptions, plus another four scores rushing and 4.4 yards per carry. Drives led by McCarthy end in points 62 percent of the time, and the team has a 92.3 percent scoring rate in the red zone in his 11 starts. - Michigan Football

Michigan moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, with TCU at No. 3 and Southern California at No. 4 behind top-ranked Georgia after four top-10 teams lost on the final day of regular-season games. The Bulldogs (12-0) are No. 1 for the eighth straight week and 11th time this season in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. Georgia received 58 first-place votes and Michigan received the other five. The Wolverines (12-0) reached a season-high No. 2 after beating Ohio State, which dropped the Buckeyes three spots to No. 5.

TCU (12-0) has its highest ranking since reaching No. 2 in the 2015 season, and USC has its best ranking this late in the season since finishing the 2016 season at No. 3. Other top-10 teams to fall were LSU, Clemson and Oregon. LSU's loss to Texas A&M dropped those Tigers five spots to No. 11. Clemson's loss to South Carolina sent it falling three spots to No. 10 The Ducks' fourth-quarter collapse against Oregon State cost Oregon a spot in the Pac-12 title game and five spots in the poll, where it fell to No. 15. Alabama was No. 6, just ahead of Tennessee, which beat the Crimson Tide on a last-second field goal at home earlier this season. No. 8 Penn State and No. 9 Washington both have their best rankings of the season. The Huskies haven't been in the top 10 since the 2018 season, when they peaked at No. 6. - AP College Football

J.J. McCarthy threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, Donovan Edwards busted the game open with two long fourth-quarter TD runs and No. 3 Michigan beat No. 2 Ohio State 45-23 Saturday, taking down the Buckeyes with stunning ease for the second straight season. Playing almost the whole game without injured star running back Blake Corum, Michigan (12-0, 9-0, No. 3 CFP) was still able to beat Ohio State (11-1, 8-1, No. 2 CFP) in Columbus for the first time since 2000. The Wolverines advance to the Big Ten championship next Saturday, with hopes for a second straight playoff appearance firmly in their control. As for the Buckeyes, they'll have to hope they can back into the CFP after again crumbling in their biggest game of the season. Jim Harbaugh and Michigan snapped an eight-game losing streak against their fiercest rivals last year. Now they have a two-game winning streak in The Game for the first time in 22 years. McCarthy, the second-year quarterback who won the starting job from incumbent Cade McNamara early in the season, played the game of his career when Michigan needed it most.

His previous longest pass completion was 42 yards, but against the Buckeyes he threw three touchdown passes of at least 45 yards, the most scoring passes of 45 or more in the history of the rivalry game. He connected on scoring passes of 69 and 75 yards to Cornelius Johnson in the first half, then hooked up with Colston Loveland in the second half for 45 yards and the freshman tight end's first career touchdown reception. Then on third-and-10 on the Ohio State 13 early in the fourth quarter, McCarthy was on the run from Zach Harrison when he lofted a pass to the end zone toward Ronnie Bell, who drew a pass interference call on safety Ronnie Hickman. That put the ball on the Ohio State 2, and three plays later the 19-year-old quarterback from suburban Chicago bowled over a tackler for another touchdown and a 31-20 Michigan lead. The Buckeyes were forced to settle for a Noah Ruggles field goal to get the score to 31-23. Edwards put the game away for Michigan. Corum's backup, who was playing with a heavily wrapped and an injured hand, raced through a hole in the right side and went 75 yards for a touchdown with 7:11 left. - Michigan/AP College Football

J.J. McCarthy threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 4 Michigan rallied from its first halftime deficit of the season to beat Rutgers 52-17 on Saturday night. Running back Blake Corum had two short TD runs and linebacker Michael Barrett intercepted two passes in a big third quarter, returning the second one 31 yards for a touchdown as Michigan (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten, No. 5 CFP) matched its best start since 2016. The Wolverines' defense played a major role in the comeback, picking off Rutgers freshman quarterback Gavin Wimsatt three times in third quarter while holding the Scarlet Knights (4-5, 1-5) scoreless.

Timmy Ward scored on a 7-yard return of a blocked punt, Jude McAtamney kicked a 32-yard field goal and Wimsatt threw a 3-yard TD pass to Sean Ryan to give the 25-point underdog Scarlet Knights a 17-14 halftime edge. It didn't prevent Rutgers from losing its 36th straight game to a ranked opponent, and eighth in a row to Michigan. The Wolverines wiped out the lead with a 21-point blitz early in the third quarter fueled by Barrett, who had never had an interception at Michigan. McCarthy hit Donovan Edwards with a go-ahead, 14-yard TD pass with 8:24 left in the quarter. On the second play from scrimmage after that, Barrett stepped in front of Wimsatt's pass to Ryan and returned it to the 10-yard line. Corum scored from 2 yards out for a 28-17 lead with 6:53 left. Nine seconds later, Barrett scored on his interception return and the game was all but over. The finish was delayed a few minutes while medical personnel attended to a member of the chain crew who became ill. He was taken off the field in a wheelchair. - Michigan/AP College Football

J.J. McCarthy did enough to win the job. McCarthy was sharp in his first start, throwing for three touchdowns to help No. 4 Michigan overwhelm Hawaii 56-10 on Saturday night. Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said McCarthy will be the team's first-string quarterback next week against Connecticut. "He's earned it," Harbaugh said. McCarthy had his turn to take the first snap after Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara had a lackluster performance in the season-opening win over Colorado State as the starter. The sophomore made the most of his opportunity against the Rainbow Warriors, throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson on his second snap and 13-yard pass to Ronnie Bell early in the second quarter to give the Wolverines (2-0) a four-touchdown lead. "It was a near-flawless performance," Harbaugh said. "He was 11 for 12, and one was dropped." McNamara entered the game with 6:22 left in the first half and took a sack to end his first possession.

McCarthy went back in and threw for his third score, dropping back and stepping up in the pocket before connecting with Cornelius Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown late in the first half to give Michigan a 42-0 lead. "I can't remember having one like that myself," said Harbaugh, a former Michigan and NFL quarterback. McCarthy, a former five-star recruit, finished 11 of 12 for 229 yards without a turnover. "He controlled the game," said Blake Corum, who ran for 88 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. "He was confident. I expected nothing less." McNamara started the second half and the senior finished 4 of 6 for 26 yards with an interception. "He's got gravel in his guts," Harbaugh said. "He'll be ready for his next opportunity." - Michigan/AP College Football

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh took the podium at Big Ten media days with the Wolverines' 2021 Big Ten championship banner hanging in Lucas Oil Stadium just to his left. While the big question here on Tuesday at the two-day kickoff event is how the Michigan quarterback competition between Cade McNamara, last year's starter, and sophomore J.J. McCarthy will play out, Harbaugh first spoke about his team. He said the players have not had a sense of entitlement since the 12-2 season that included Michigan's first win over Ohio State since 2011 and the program's first Big Ten title since 2004.

He listed what he hopes the team achieves this season. "Our goals would be to beat Ohio State and Michigan State in the same year, win the Big Ten championship and win the national championship," Harbaugh said. "Those are our four goals." As far as the quarterbacks, the competition begins Aug. 3 when preseason camp opens. McCarthy did not throw during spring practice because of an injury to his right (throwing) shoulder, but he is prepared to challenge McNamara for the starting job. Harbaugh said both players had "phenomenal seasons" last year and that "the best player is going to play." "Cade McNamara is going to be really tough to beat out for the starting quarterback job," Harbaugh said. "J.J. McCarthy is going to be really tough to beat out for the starting quarterback job." - Detroit News

As a backup last season, J.J. McCarthy, threw for 516 yards and had five touchdowns against two interceptions and also ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He likes to say the injury was a "blessing in disguise" because it reinforced to him how much he wants to be the Michigan starting quarterback. "Being out there and being able to play with my guys and sitting out for so long, it feels like I'm a little kid again out there in first grade playing ball with my boys," McCarthy said.

He has been throwing, but said he couldn't say he's exactly where he wants to be. Not yet, at least. "Arm-wise, if I could put a number on it, I'm 90%," McCarthy said. "I can throw 50 to 60 yards, but I haven't hit that 70 to 80 range that I want to hit. That's kind of the range I'm looking for." McCarthy said before the injury he comfortably threw 70-plus yards. His eyes twinkled as he gave an assured nod when asked if the Wolverines have players who can sprint fast enough to make that type of play, say, on a Hail Mary. "A lot of guys on our team," McCarthy said, smiling confidently. - Detroit News

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy said his right shoulder is not yet fully healthy, but he is throwing and is eager to compete for the starting job in preseason camp. McCarthy had a recent autograph signing at The M Den, and he was upbeat about where things stand with his shoulder, the process he has taken to rehab his injury and the prospects of competing with returning starter Cade McNamara, who helped lead Michigan to a Big Ten title last season. McNamara threw for 2,576 yards and had 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading Michigan to a 12-2 record.

McCarthy, who participated in spring practice but did not throw, played in 11 games as a freshman last season and threw for 516 yards and five touchdowns. He adds a different wrinkle because of his mobility, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. "Very hungry. Very hungry, I'll say that," McCarthy told The Detroit News about getting to fall camp and challenging for the starting job. "I'm not looking at it as competing; I'm just looking at it as tunnel vision. I'm gonna do whatever I can to be the best quarterback, best teammate, best player I can be, and whatever happens, happens." McCarthy, who started a foundation, J.J. For the Kids, earlier this year, and late last year donated $10,000 from his NIL earnings to various children's hospitals, including Mott Hospital in Ann Arbor, and to the Oxford School Fund, is seemingly always smiling and comes across as confident and upbeat. - Detroit News

Can you believe Jim Harbaugh almost left Stanford for Kansas several years back? Good career non-move. Now, he's in charge of the defending Big Ten champion, which reached the College Football Playoff for the first time. The offense welcomes back both Cade McNamara and former News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. Lots of options for Harbaugh. The defense needs to replace the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, Aidan Hutchinson. Bottom line? The offense will be better and the defense should drop off. - News Gazette Tribune
