Looking ahead to the loaded 2024 quarterback draft class: Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams headlines the group after his masterful season at USC. Williams threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns, adding 10 more scores on the ground. He is in line to be the next first-round pick from Lincoln Riley's offense. Joining Williams in the Pac-12 are two excellent senior quarterbacks, Bo Nix (Oregon) and Michael Penix (Washington). The former transfers broke out on the scene with their news programs in 2022 and are ready to run it back next season.Drake Maye shot up draft boards following his fantastic redshirt freshman season. He helped lead UNC to the ACC championship game, throwing 38 touchdowns in the process. Maye looks the part of a future NFL quarterback. Texas' Quinn Ewers is a prime candidate to take a massive jump going forward. He has one of the best arms in the nation and should be more comfortable in the starting role. - USA Today

Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams delivered USC its first Heisman Trophy winner since Reggie Bush in 2005 this season. But unlike the legendary Trojans running back, Williams is able to capitalize on the win in the NIL space. And even though he was not preparing for the College Football Playoff finals earlier this week, he was able to strike a partnership for the event. He spent part of his weekend at College Football Playoff fan central as part of a partnership with AT&T. Set up at the bra nd's "Fan Bowl," Williams signed autographs and took pictures with fans. And he appeared at AT&T's 5G Radio Show at the Allstate Championship Tailgate at SoFi Stadium on Monday. Since making the move to the West Coast last February, he has pieced togeth er one of the strongest NIL resumes of any player in the country. The USC quarterback currently holds a $3.2 million On3 NIL Valuation. - On3.com

Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams said he is ready to play in the Cotton Bowl on Monday, which will be exactly one month after the Southern California quarterback suffered a significant hamstring injury in the Pac-12 championship game. "I feel good," Williams said Friday. "We're obviously all being smart about it because it did just happen a couple of weeks ago. But I've been feeling good." Williams got hurt on a 59-yard run in the first half of USC's loss to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game on D ec. 2. While obviously and admittedly in pain the rest of the game, he still finished with 363 yards passing and three touchdowns. "As soon as it happened, I actually tried to wave off coach (Lincoln) Riley for the next play," Williams said. "So I felt i t as soon as it happened." Riley, who wasn't made available to reporters Friday, had said after the injury that Williams would need a lot of rehab to have a chance to play in the game against Tulane. After practice at AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys where the game will be played, Williams it has felt "like normal prep" for him since the Trojans got to North Texas earlier this week. While not elaborating on what he has done, he said he anticipates playing the entire game after th e extended time since the Pac-12 title game. "If it was still the same as if I just injured it, i wouldn't go out there because I don't think I'd be as good of a help," Williams said. "During that game, I was already in the game, I was already in the flo w of everything. But starting off with an injury like that, it'd be a little different." Asked if he felt he was capable of doing everything he will need to do in the Cotton Bowl, Williams responded, "we'll see when I get out there. But I think I'm capab le." Williams, who went with Riley from Oklahoma to Southern California after last season, has thrown for 4,075 yards and 37 touchdowns with four interceptions this year, and has run for 372 yards and 10 more scores. - Southern California/AP College Foot ball

USC quarterback Caleb Williams is hopeful he can lead the Trojans' offense against No. 16 Tulane in the Cotton Bowl, while coach Lincoln Riley offered a more cautious forecast Sunday. Williams limped his way through the Pac-12 title game after he "popped " his hamstring on a first-quarter run. Riley noted after the game that Williams was "not even close to 50%" during the second half and that he considered going to backup Miller Moss. But the Heisman Trophy favorite refused to check out, instead fighting his way through the rest of the Utah loss while largely confined to the pocket, unable to scramble as usual.Williams, who still had a serious limp Sunday, was confident that he would play in the bowl game when asked by The Times after an event fo r his foundation, Caleb Cares. "It would take a lot to keep me out," Williams said. Riley said Williams likely would not be able to play if USC had another game in the next two weeks, referring to it as a "significant hamstring injury." "Hamstrings are d ifferent for everybody, but the nature of his is pretty severe," Riley said. "... We will see how it progresses. We obviously hope to have him. He's a warrior." - LA Times

The College Football Playoff announced Thursday it will expand to a 12-team event starting in 2024, completing an 18-month process that was fraught with delays and disagreements. The announcement comes a day after the Rose Bowl agreed to amend its contra ct for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, which was the last hurdle CFP officials needed cleared to triple the size of what is now a four-team format. We appreciate the leaders of the six bowl games and the two future national championship game host cities for t heir cooperation," CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said in a statement. "Everyone realized that this change is in the best interest of college football and pulled together to make it happen." The first round of the new playoff in 2024 will take place the week ending Saturday, Dec. 21. Exact dates are still to be determined. The championship game for the 2024 season will be played Jan. 20, 2025, in Atlanta. The championship game for the 2025 season will be played Jan. 19, 2026, in Miami Gardens , Florida. Both are more than a week later than the current title game timing. Expansion is expected to produce about $450 million in additional gross revenue for the conferences and schools that participate. The plan to expand the playoff was unveiled i n June 2021, but the conference commissioners who manage the CFP could not come to the unanimous consensus needed to push the proposal forward. Expansion for the 2024 season was pronounced dead back in February. University presidents and chancellors who oversee the CFP stepped in and revived the process over the summer. They approved the original plan for use by 2026, and threw it back to the commissioners, directing them to try to expand by 2024, if possible. The College Football Playoff’s 12-year co ntract with ESPN runs through the 2025-26 season. - AP College Football

Caleb Willams polished his Heisman Trophy credentials with 232 yards passing and four total touchdowns, and No. 5 Southern California capped its outstanding regular season under new coach Lincoln Riley by staying firmly in the College Football Playoff ra ce with a 38-27 victory over No. 13 Notre Dame on Saturday night. Tahj Washington caught an early TD pass from Williams while USC (11-1, No. 6 CFP) snapped its four-game losing streak in its famed intersectional rivalry with the Fighting Irish (8-4, No. 15 CFP). The night felt like a Heisman coronation for Williams, who iced the win on his third rushing touchdown with 2:35 to play by sprinting 16 yards through the heart of the Notre Dame defense for the 44th total TD of his incredible season. Williams s truck a Heisman pose on the USC sideline after a score in the first half, and he was serenaded with frequent chants of "Heisman! Heisman!" from the Coliseum crowd. Although USC is headed to Pac-12 title game in Las Vegas on Friday, the revitalized Trojan s first kept their CFP hopes intact with this victory - and even got a boost from LSU's loss to Texas A&M during this game. USC became the first team to gain 400 yards and to score more than 32 points this season against the Irish while completing its fi rst 11-win regular season since 2008.Drew Pyne passed for 318 yards and hit Michael Mayer for two of his three TDs for the Irish, whose five-game winning streak ended in their regular-season finale under new coach Marcus Freeman. Pyne completed hi s first 15 throws into the fourth quarter, but he ultimately couldn't keep up with Williams, and the Irish surrendered the Jeweled Shillelagh in their first trip to the Coliseum since 2018. The 93rd edition of this rivalry was a showcase for Williams, th e sophomore who followed Riley from Oklahoma to USC last winter and quickly reached his extraordinary potential on the West Coast. With a pocket elusiveness that had Notre Dame's defense embracing air and a lively arm at nearly any distance, Williams set single-season records for quarterbacks in total touchdowns and yards rushing at a school rich in talent at the position. After repeatedly eluding the Notre Dame defense on USC's final drive of the first half, Williams rushed for a 5-yard TD up the middl e on a perfect run-pass option. When the quarterback reached the USC sideline, he smilingly struck a Heisman pose to his teammates. Williams added another TD run on the first snap of the fourth quarter, and he punctuated it by blowing kisses to the USC s tudent section. - USC/AP College Football

"If you would have told me at the end of last season I would be here now with this group of guys and being able to play for a championship, I would have called you a dead liar. Caleb Williams passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more scores, and No. 8 Southern California overcame an apparently serious injury to top running back Travis Dye in a 55-17 victory over Colorado on Friday night. Williams account ed for five total touchdowns in his fourth consecutive outstanding game for the Trojans (9-1, 7-1 Pac-12), who warmed up for season-defining games against No. 9 UCLA and No. 20 Notre Dame in the next two weeks with a slow start followed by a blowout vict ory over the Buffaloes (1-9, 1-6).Former Colorado receiver Brenden Rice had 70 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Trojans, while Tahj Washington and Austin Jones caught TD passes from Williams in the third quarter. Jones threw up a 2 and a 6 after his score to honor the jersey number of Dye, the Pac-12's second-leading rusher with 884 yards. Dye left the field on a cart with an air cast on his left leg after getting tackled awkwardly in the second quarter. Southern California's defense gave up 28 points and 290 yards in the second half. The Trojans' special teams botched an extra point and then got bamboozled on an onside kick while California transformed a near-blowout into a near-thriller. Despite every mistake by his USC teammates, Caleb Williams simply wouldn't allow them to lose. Williams passed for 360 yards, rushed for a touchdown and threw two of his four scoring passes to Michael Jackson III, leading No. 9 USC to a 41-35 victory over Cal on Satur day night.Williams capped his latest standout effort by rushing 15 yards up the middle on a keeper for the decisive first down with 2:11 to play, using up Cal's final timeout and keeping all of the Trojans' season goals achievable. "We didn't play our best on really any of the sides (of the ball)," USC coach Lincoln Riley said. "Didn't have a very good first half offensively. Did not finish the game well defensively. Made some big special teams plays, but also gave up a few. Obviously a lot to im prove on. We know we're going to have to improve, but if you can improve by winning, you're going to be there in the end." Tahj Washington caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans (8-1, 6-1 Pac-12), whose defense was shredded in the second half of a third straight subpar outing. But Williams went 26 for 41 without a turnover and coolly kept the Trojans ahead in the fourth quarter of his second straight outstanding performance without his top two receivers, injured Jordan Addison and Mario Williams. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns, and No. 10 Southern California scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to outlast Arizona 45-37 on Saturday night. The Trojans (7-1, 5-1 Pac-12) had an extra week to shake off their first loss o f the season, an emotional 43-42 setback at No. 14 Utah. USC fought off some early missed opportunities - one caused by the officials - against Arizona, racking up 621 total yards to match its best start since 2008. The Trojans have won 10 straight again st Arizona. The Wildcats (3-5, 1-4) nearly kept up with USC offensively, finishing with 543 total yards. Defensively, they struggled with missed tackles and allowed USC to convert 11 of 17 on third down. Jayden de Laura threw for 380 yards and three touc hdowns to Dorian Singer, the last a 5-yarder that cut USC's lead to 45-37 with 1:26 left. USC recovered the onside kick to seal the victory. Arizona kept it close most of the night.Singer had a spectacular 23-yard touchdown catch from de Laura, fe nding off a defender to snare it one-handed, and Tyler Loop kicked two field goals. Williams had a pair of first-half touchdown passes, but the Trojans also missed on some good scoring opportunities. USC settled for a field goal on its first drive and De nis Lynch missed badly on a 56-yard attempt after Williams' 30-yd TD pass to Terrell Bynum was called back by a holding penalty. USC appeared to be in good position for more points just before halftime when Williams hit Rice on a 33-yard pass to Arizona' s 10. Instead, the officials started the clock before spotting the ball and Williams couldn't spike it before time ran out, leaving USC coach Lincoln Riley incensed. Williams found Tahj Washington on a 3-yard touchdown to open the third quarter, then fou nd him again on a 47-yard score as he was being hit to put USC up 31-16. Arizona rallied, closing to 31-29 on de Laura's 19-yard TD pass and Michael Wiley's 10-yard TD run on an option. USC finally stretched the lead after that. Williams hit Kyle Ford on a 5-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter and Travis Dye leaped in for a 2-yard TD run to make it 45-29. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams threw two touchdown passes to Mario Williams and No. 6 Southern California shut out Washington State in the second half of a 30-14 victory Saturday night. Travis Dye rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12), w ho stayed unbeaten in coach Lincoln Riley's first season. USC hadn't started a season 6-0 since 2006, near the height of coach Pete Carroll's powerhouse era. Caleb Williams went only 15 of 29 for 188 yards, but made big throws when necessary in an up-and -down performance. The Trojans didn’t need their quarterback to be brilliant this time, with Dye and the offensive line doing much of the damage in a workmanlike second half.Cameron Ward passed for 172 yards while hitting Robert Ferrel and Nakia Watson for touchdowns for the Cougars (4-2, 1-2), who remained winless at the Coliseum since 2013. Washington State fell short of its second road victory over a Top 25 team this season when its offense bogged down on seven consecutive scoreless drives t o end the game. Although USC's defense somehow didn't add to its 15 takeaways this season, the Trojans impressively shut down an opponent that had scored 107 points in its previous three games. Washington State didn't score in the final 43 minutes, and T uli Tuipulotu got three of the Trojans' five sacks. USC even persevered through the absence of three significant players. Biletnikoff Award-winning receiver Jordan Addison left the Trojans' lineup during the second half with an undisclosed injury. USC al ready was without top linebacker Shane Lee due to injury, and it lost top safety Calen Bullock to a targeting call decided by video review in the second quarter. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams passed for 348 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score, keeping No. 6 Southern California unbeaten in coach Lincoln Riley's first season with a 42-25 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Mario Williams, Malcolm Epp s and Kyron Hudson caught TD passes from Caleb Williams, who returned to elite form after struggling through much of the Trojans' nail-biting 17-14 win at Oregon State last weekend. Travis Dye also rushed for 62 yards and two second-half touchdowns for U SC (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12). Caleb Williams committed USC's first turnover of the season with an end-zone interception, but the Oklahoma transfer otherwise marched the Trojans up and down the field against Arizona State for 485 total yards while demonstrating h is elusiveness, accuracy and playmaking acumen.Emory Jones passed for 243 yards and Xazavian Valladay rushed for two touchdowns for the Sun Devils (1-4, 0-2), who gave an encouraging effort in their second game under interim head coach Shaun Aguan o after the firing of Herm Edwards. Valladay and Jones scored early TDs to keep the game close for nearly three quarters, but Arizona State's offense stalled on three straight drives while USC pulled away. The Sun Devils had minus-6 yards rushing in the second half. Jordan Addison had eight catches for 105 yards for the Trojans, who are off to their first 5-0 start since 2020 - but their first in a full season since 2006, near the height of the Pete Carroll era. USC is also 3-0 under Riley at the Colise um, where another lively crowd turned up to see the Trojans’ rebirth. USC's first three drives all ended in touchdowns, with Caleb Williams sneaking in for the first score. The quarterback also showed off his elusiveness while evading several near-sack s, and his across-the-body scoring pass to Mario Williams was an exceptional play. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores, Travis Dye and Austin Jones each ran for more than 100 yards and No. 7 Southern California beat Fresno State 45-17 on Saturday night. Williams completed 25 of 37 passes fo r the Trojans, who have scored at least 45 points in each of the first three games under Lincoln Riley. Dye had his second straight 100-yard game with 102 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown while Jones had 12 carries for 110 yards and a score. It is the first time since 2018 that USC (3-0) has had a pair of running backs reach the century mark in a game. The Bulldogs (1-2) suffered a bigger loss though than the game. Quarterback Jake Haener sustained a right leg injury during the third quarter and was carted off. The Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year had his leg bend awkwardly while being sacked by Solomon Byrd at the Fresno State 46. Byrd also recovered Haener's fumble.Haener returned to sideline the on crutches and with his right foo t in a boot. The senior was 10 of 17 for 117 yards with a touchdown and interception before the injury. Jordan Mims had 114 yards rushing. USC scored on its first three drives to build a 21-3 advantage midway through the second quarter. After the Trojans won the coin toss, Williams rolled right and connected with Jordan Addison for a 3-yard TD to complete a 12-play opening possession that took nearly five minutes. The sophomore then scored his first two rushing TDs in a USC uniform. Williams had an 8-ya rd scramble late in the first quarter to make it 14-0. Following a field goal by Fresno State's Abraham Montano, Williams capped a 15-play drive with a 1-yard sneak. Fresno State closed within 21-10 with 6:30 remaining in the first half after Erik Brooks scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass. Brooks caught a quick slant from Haener at the 35, caused Calen Bullock to miss a tackle and then outran the USC defense into the end zone. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams passed for 249 yards, rushed for 68 more and hit Jordan Addison for two touchdowns, and coach Lincoln Riley's tenure at No. 14 Southern California got off to a roaring start with a 66-14 victory over Rice on Saturday. Calen Bullock, Shane Lee and Ralen Goforth returned three of USC's four interceptions for touchdowns. The Trojans scored more points in Riley's debut than they did in any game under Clay Helton, who was fired last season before a powerhouse program sank to its worst record i n 30 years. With Williams going 19 for 22 while leading six consecutive scoring drives to open the game, USC had its highest-scoring performance since 2008, when the program still reigned near the top of college football under Pete Carroll.Riley a nd Williams left Oklahoma during the offseason and reunited in Los Angeles to rebuild the Trojans, who are hoping for a swift return to regular national title contention. They appear to have the talent to do it all on offense: Stanford transfer Austin Jo nes and freshman Raleek Brown rushed for touchdowns, while Addison - last season's Biletnikoff Award winner at Pitt - scored on USC's opening drive and finished with five catches for 54 yards. Darwin Barlow also rushed for a score, and Brown had a stella r start to his USC career with 76 combined yards on just eight touches. - USC/AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 10. Caleb Williams, QB, USC, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 1,912 yards, 21 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. What Williams can do on the field is evident. But perhaps his biggest strength is th e fact that the heightened hype around him doesn't seem to make him uncomfortable. USC has been missing a player with -- and this is meant as a compliment -- this kind of irrational confidence. If his game matches it this season, he can single-handedly w ill this team to not just relevance, but success. - ESPN.com

A nation-leading 20 kids have transferred to USC from other schools. At least that many have been forced out of the program. The money is flowing, the promises are soaring, the program has been turned on its helmet, and you know what that means. New coac h Lincoln Riley MUST deliver at least a CFP team and he knows it. "We didn't come here to play for second, we are not wired that way," Riley said. "We came here competitively to win championships, win them now and to win them for a long time." Players wh o are the biggest targets of expectation are quarterback Caleb Williams, who arrived from Oklahoma with Riley, and wide receiver Jordan Addison, the Biletnikoff Award winner from Pittsburgh. Williams was asked what he would consider a successful season. "Win every game," he said. To do so, USC may need to score 50 points a game. Riley doesn't do defense. At Oklahoma, opponents scored 54, 45 and 63 points in three of their four bowl appearances. Que the scoreboard. - Los Angeles Times

Recently, college football insider Mike Farrell spread a disputed na rrative on Twitter about Williams being driven away from Oklahoma and to USC because of OU fans. Williams' dad AND Williams himself never said this. Williams' dad, Carl, did mention that he himself was not thrilled with how Oklahoma fans reacted to his s on entering the transfer portal, but it wasn't why he transferred at all. In fact, Caleb even addressed the fan reaction back when he made his decision to come to USC. Said Caleb: "They reacted kind of how I respected them to. I appreciate all the OU fan s. I love all the OU fans. All the love and support they have given me throughout the season before I was playing, before I got there and while I was playing. They'll always be in my heart." How nice. USC and UCLA, two of the Pac-12's flagship programs, are planning to leave the conference for the Big Ten as early as 2024, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. The Mercury News first reported the news. There is still a formal notification process, as the two schools have to let the Pac-12 know their intentions to leave. USC and UCLA also have to formally apply to the Big Ten. According to a source, that process is underway. Multiple sources told ESPN on Thursday that the move is expected to happen. A source called the next steps "formalities" and an announcement could come within the next 24 hours.A source said that the exploration of the finances and what it would take to make the move have been going on for weeks. While finances played a bi g role in the move, competitiveness, brand and the overall landscape of the future of the sport played a bigger role. "USC and UCLA have to make the decisions to position them best for the long term," said a source familiar with the move. After walking off a stage at the Galen Center, after talking to kids from Audubon Middle School, Caleb Williams took a look around the hall. The USC quarterback took in the scene for a moment as kids opened up their provided lunches. "I never thought at 20 I'd have a foundation, I never thought at 20 I'd be here in L.A.," Williams said. Friday was the first official event for Caleb Cares, Williams' new foundation committed to an anti-bullying cause. The middle schoolers were given a tour of USC's athlet ics buildings by the department's director of community outreach, McCall Hall, who emphasized how much work was required to become a collegiate student-athlete. The tour started in Heritage Hall before entering the John McKay Center and ending at Galen C enter, where Williams met with the group. After introducing himself with information like his hometown - Washington, D.C. - and nickname - Superman - he got into his message.Williams opened up about things people had teased or been critical of him for in the past, from painting his fingernails as a form of expression to his January decision to transfer from Oklahoma, a move he told the kids he still receives vitriolic tweets and hate mail about. He told them that the key to overcoming any type of bullying is to have a strong support system, as his parents beamed proudly in the back of the room. "This is huge because as a kid, you get bullied and that can change your life if you don't have people around you that can help move along or make sure y our mental is straight, that can affect you very deeply in the future," Williams told reporters. "I paint my nails as a male. I left Oklahoma; as we know, they have a really good support system when you're there, when you leave, they're a little bit diff erent. So having that (support system), it was huge." - Orange County Register

A sophomore transfer who followed coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, Williams is the player who most symbolizes this new era of USC football. Which, by extension, could make him Los Angeles' next superstar athlete. USC coach Lincoln Riley was encouraged by the energy during the Trojans' spring game, which featured big plays from Caleb Williams and some surprises. The glorified scrimmage on Saturday amounted to a public unveiling, but Williams treated it like, well, a glorified scrimmage. "I don't really get nervous," he said with a nonchalant delivery that emphasized his point. USC claimed the announced crowd of 33,427 was the largest to watch a spring game since attendance records were first kept in the late 1990s, but Williams was unfazed. He complet ed his first nine passes. He finished his first two drives with touchdown passes to Mario Williams, another sophomore transfer from Oklahoma.Alternating drives with backup quarterback Miller Moss over two 15-minute halves, Williams was 10 for 12 p assing for 98 yards. "He's getting more comfortable," Riley said. "He's becoming a more seasoned, experienced quarterback." He's already electric. Williams can run, as he showed on the first play of his second drive when he pump-faked and bolted down the right sideline for an eight-yard gain. He can throw, as he demonstrated on the next play when he lofted a perfectly weighted pass that traveled nearly 30 yards in the air as defensive lineman Tyrone Taleni was closing in on him. Receiver Terrell Bynum w as on the other end of the 29-yard completion. "The quarterback position, to win championships, you need that position to play well," Riley said. - Los Angeles Times

Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams said Monday he is entering his name in the transfer portal so he can speak with other schools. The freshman added he had not ruled out staying with the Sooners, but within hours of Williams' announcement, Oklahoma migh t have found his replacement. Former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who had committed to transfer to UCLA last month, posted on Twitter that he was instead planning to go to Oklahoma. Williams, a former five-star recruit from Washington, D.C., who was r ecruited to Oklahoma by then-head coach Lincoln Riley, revealed his intentions on social media.Riley left Oklahoma to become coach at Southern California the day after the Sooners ended their regular season with a loss to Oklahoma State. Former Cl emson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was hired to replace Riley. "I think we all come to college to find our path and prepare for the future. I came to Oklahoma with a plan, but with all the recent changes, I need to figure out what is the right pa th for me moving forward," Williams tweeted. Williams would be one of the most sought-after transfers in college football. He passed for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns and ran for 435 yards and six scores in 2020, taking over the starting job from preseas on Heisman Trophy favorite Spencer Rattler midway through the season. - AP College Football

Oklahoma's imperfect season still could end with a Big 12 championship, and possibly more. Caleb Williams passed for a touchdown and ran for another, Jalen Redmond returned a fumble for a score, and No. 12 Oklahoma beat Iowa State 28-21 on Saturday. Kenn edy Brooks ran for 115 yards for the Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12, No. 13 CFP), who bounced back from a loss to Baylor and solidified their chances of reaching the Big 12 title game and winning a seventh straight conference title. They also kept alive their slim College Football Playoff hopes and did their part to set up a showdown with No. 9 Oklahoma State next Saturday to close the regular season.Iowa State has been a thorn in Oklahoma's side in recent years, beating the Sooners in 2017 and 2020. Oklahoma beat the Cyclones in the Big 12 championship game last year. "That's a darn good football team," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "We all know. We've been in a lot of battles against those guys." The Sooners pushed through, despite at times mi ssing more than 20 players during the week with the flu. Oklahoma is starting to put it all together. Caleb Williams threw for 402 yards and six touchdowns and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past Texas Tech 52-21 on Saturday. The Sooners won six of their first eight games by 12 or fewer points, and the offense, defense and special teams had spent much of the season bailing each other out. This time, Oklahoma produced the kind of dominant victory fans expected from the start of the season. "Fantastic team win," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "Just a complete perfor mance all the way around. Offense, defense, special teams - huge contributions from everybody. Really loved the week of preparation. The guys did a really good job carrying it over from from the practice field to the game field." Williams - a true freshm an - tied Kyler Murray and Landry Jones for the second-most touchdown passes in a game in school history. Baker Mayfield threw seven against Texas Tech in 2016.He bounced back from a rough first series. "I thought he had a really clear mind the en tire way and obviously settled in there quickly," Riley said. "Really nice job of things inside the pocket, and obviously, made some key plays out of it." Riley said the plan wasn't to throw such a large percentage of the time. Williams threw 30 passes. The Sooners ran the ball just 20 times - many of which came after Williams left the game. "Just kind of how it evolved," he said. "We've shown we can be a team that can run it pretty well. Today was one of our better games throwing the football." Marvin Mims caught four passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Mario Williams had five receptions for 100 yards and a score to help the Sooners (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) extend their nation-leading winning streak to 17 games. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Facing a far tougher test than expected against Kansas, Caleb Williams bailed out No. 3 Oklahoma with quick feet and quick thinking. The freshman converted two crucial fourth downs in the fourth quarter, one with a 40-yard touchdown run, and Oklahoma ral lied to avoid an enormous upset and beat Kansas 35-23 Saturday, The Sooners (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) trailed by double figures on two occasions - including 10-0 at the half -- but outscored the Jayhawks 35-13 in the second half to win their 16th straight game. "I'm excited for the win, but we played poor football in the first half," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "We couldn't get Kansas off the field and missed several opportunities. I give our team credit for rising up. Kansas deserves a lot of credit, an d they did a few things that gave us trouble." Jason Bean passed for 246 yards and a score for Kansas (1-6, 0-4), which led 17-7 late in the third quarter. A 66-yard run by Trevon West sparked the Oklahoma offense, and two plays later Williams tossed a s hort TD pass to cut the lead to 17-14 in the third quarter.Kansas was able to stay in the game because of the legs of Devin Neal, who ran for 100 and a pair of touchdowns. Kansas didn't punt until the fourth quarter. "I'm proud of our guys and the way the first half especially went," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. "We were able to mix some things together and keep their explosive offense off the field." In his second start, Williams threw for 178 yards and two scores and ran for 70 yards. Willi ams used a sharp cut to avoid two tacklers on a fourth-and-3 and then raced the distance for a 40-yard score to make it 28-17 midway through the fourth quarter. After KU cut it to 28-23, Oklahoma faced a fourth-and-1 near midfield. Kennedy Brooks looked as if he would be stopped short of the line to gain, but Williams took the ball from the back. "I saw Caleb so I gave it to him," Brooks said. "I knew it would be close if I was behind the line of scrimmage and I was happy Caleb ran for a first down." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Caleb Williams had a big starting debut for No. 4 Oklahoma, throwing for 295 yards and four touchdowns and running for another score in the Sooners' 52-31 victory over TCU on Saturday night. The freshman from Washington, D.C., unseated Spencer Rattler as the starter after leading a comeback victory over Texas last week in Dallas. He started fast against TCU with an opening 75-yard touchdown drive that took just under three minutes. Williams didn't learn he was Oklahoma's starter until midweek. Riley sai d he was ready to play either of his former blue-chip quarterbacks, if necessary, against TCU. "Caleb got the opportunity tonight, and obviously did a great job with it," Riley said. "I'm confident that had Spencer gotten the opportunity tonight with the way he practiced, he would've played very well also. Thought the room handled it great. Proud of those guys for a winning effort and being team-first guys." Williams was 18 of 23 and ran for 66 yards on nine carries. He had a 41-yard scoring run, juking a defender at the line of scrimmage and taking off.Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) began to pull away from TCU with three consecutive touchdown drives to open the third quarter, including two touchdown connections between Williams and receiver Jadon H aselwood. Haselwood finished with 56 yards on a team-leading six catches. The third-year Oklahoma receiver was impressed by his quarterback's poise, considering his inexperience. "He's a great leader for being a freshman. I don't think he ever feels pres sure," Haselwood said of Williams. "He's always in a good mood. Even last week, he felt no pressure. Like no fear, and you can tell by the way he played. Just a great kid. He can sling it, he can run, he can do whatever he needs to do to get the ball dow nfield." - Oklahoma/AP College Football
