Brock Sturges ran for two touchdowns and his second of the game occurred in overtime to give Texas State a 23-17 win over Florida International on Saturday. FIU quarterback Max Bortenschlager fumbled the ball as he was sacked on the Panthers' first posse ssion of overtime. Sturges' 11-yard game winner followed his 1-yard dive that ended the Bobcats' (1-1) 10-play, 62-yard drive which tied it 17-all with 10:09 left in regulation. Bortenschlager threw a 34-yard scoring pass to Rivaldo Fairweather to start the second half to give FIU (1-1) its first lead at 14-10. Bortenschlager threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns and D'vonte Price had 111 yards rushing on 23 carries. - AP College Football

Texas State junior running back Brock Sturges was named the 2021 Doak Walker Award Watch List, as announced by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum on Wednesday. The award is named after former SMU halfback Doak Walker, who played for the Mustangs from 1945-49, an d is annually presented to the top running back in the FBS. Sturges is one of seven Sun Belt tailbacks named to the list. The Allen native transferred to Texas State from Butler Community College in 2020 and made an immediate impact, starting in 10 games and playing in all 12. Sturges led the Bobcats with 111 carries for 532 yards and five touchdowns while also catching 11 passes for 116 yards and one score. - San Marcos Record

Playing in the school's first nationally-televised game on ESPN, the Texas State's comeback bid for a victory came up short when the Bobcats suffered a hard-fought 31-24 loss to the SMU Mustangs on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Brady McBride threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns in his first start as a Bobcat, completing 21 of 39 passes and having touchdown passes of 3 yards and 19 yards. Calvin Hill added 100 yards on 13 carries, and Brock Sturges ran for 95 yards and another TD i n his Texas State debut as the Bobcats rushed for 189 yards. - San Marcos Record
