 Jaylin Simpson, Auburn, Player News

  08/05/21 - FS Jaylin SimpsonrSr/2024, Auburn, 6-0, 179 (DS#7 FS) + More +

Auburn's secondary could be the toughest group to project from a personnel standpoint just because of what the team brings back in terms of returning production and what it added this offseason. Senior Smoke Monday is all but assured of locking down one of the starting safety spots, while the same can be said for senior Roger McCreary at corner. The other three main positions at safety, corner and nickel should be up for grabs in fall camp, and there is no shortage of options for the Tigers at each spot.

Nehemiah Pritchett and Jaylin Simpson both saw ample playing time at corner last season, with Simpson earning the starting job in fall camp but Pritchett starting every game but the season opener opposite McCreary due to an early-season injury sustained by Simpson. Those two will be competing for the job with West Virginia transfer Dreshun Miller, who led the Mountainers' top-ranked pass defense with eight pass breakups last season. JUCO transfer Ro Torrence, another one of Auburn's offseason additions, could work his way into the rotation as well. Simpson ended spring practices as the projected starter at corner, but that was before Miller arrived on campus. Pritchett can also move inside and play nickel, and if he doesn't lock down a spot at corner, he could be one of several options in the slot for Auburn, as Zion Puckett and Ladarius Tennison - who spent the spring working mostly at safety - as well as JUCO transfer Bydarrius Knighten are all capable of competing for reps there. - Birmingham News

2021 is Jaylin Simpson's redemption year. Just like for most people, Simpson's 2020 did not go as planned, and he's ready to move on from circumstances he couldn't control. Despite the pandemic, last season actually started out well for Simpson. After a redshirt freshman year playing behind Javaris Davis and Noah Igbinoghene, Simpson entered 2020 fall camp as one of the five guys competing to fill the cornerback spot across from Roger McCreary, which opened with Davis's and Igbinoghene's departures. The competition was fierce, but Simpson won the job. However, he wasn't able to keep it, through no fault of his own.

Simpson was among the first group of defenders to hit the field in the season opener against Kentucky. He performed so well, recording four tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup, that the SEC named him newcomer of a week. But by the second game, Simpson was hit by injury. He didn't play against Georgia or Arkansas and was limited the rest of the season. "I was very - hurt physically, but I was really hurt mentally," Simpson said. "I had just got my feet wet, first game." In the meantime, his teammate Nehemiah Pritchett seized his chance and became one of the top defensive backs in the league, allowing the fewest yards per target of any cornerback in the SEC, which made it very hard for someone to knock him out of his spot. - Birmingham News

After winning the starting job, Simpson won SEC freshman of the week and then had to sit out the next two games because of injury. Although he's played in Auburn's last three games, he hasn't recovered enough to work his way back into the starting lineup. Simpson had two tackles and one big pass breakup against LSU. He has six tackles, two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry this season. - Birmingham News

Reinforcements could be coming back to Auburn's secondary this week, with two injured cornerbacks expected to return to practice, according to Gus Malzahn. Starting cornerback Jaylin Simpson and junior college transfer Marco Domio are among the injured players Malzahn expects back in the fold this week as No. 15 Auburn (2-1) prepares for this weekend's trip to South Carolina (1-2). The Tigers will face the Gamecocks at 11 a.m. Saturday in Williams-Brice Stadium, with the game airing on ESPN.

Auburn's secondary has been beleaguered by a group of injuries early on this season. Simpson sustained a hamstring injury in the season opener against Kentucky, when he made his first career start and earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Domio has not yet made his Auburn debut while recovering from an undisclosed injury he sustained during fall camp. Senior defensive back. Jordyn Peters also exited the Arkansas game late in the first quarter with an injury. "If we have our guys healthy, we do feel like we've got quality depth," Malzahn said. "...Hopefully we'll get out guys back healthy." - Birmingham News
