Ja'Varrius Johnson's decision to enter the transfer portal on Feb. 2 seemed a considerable blow to an Auburn position group that was already going to lack experience heading into 2022. The receiver logged the fourth-most snaps of anyone in the receiver r oom last fall. Of those four, Kobe Hudson had already transferred to UCF nearly a month prior and Demetris Robertson was NFL Draft-bound, leaving Shedrick Jackson and Johnson as Auburn's only receivers with more than 150 snaps from 2021. "I had a hard ti me going on," Johnson said Wednesday of his decision to enter the portal. "It was just a decision that I made with my family, and I took some time off and thought about it." But after thinking about it, Johnson made up his mind, and as spring practices r olled around in March, he'd withdrawn from the portal and returned to the Tigers because "This is where I wanted to be," he said. "I've been here, going onto my fourth year now, and you know, the connection I had with each player on the team, so that was like the biggest thing too, for me, was just not like leaving my boys because I've been here for a while and made connections with them," Johnson said. - Opelika-Auburn News

One of the biggest wins for Auburn this offseason was keeping junior WR Ja'Varrius Johnson from transferring after he entered the portal. Johnson was 5th in receiving yards for the Tigers last season. He had 274 yards on 19 receptions. One play that went for 59 yards was called a run play, although Johnson would have still be in 5th place on the team in receiving yards if it were called a reception.According to Cole Pinkston of "Auburn Live," Johnson will be the leader in receiving yards for a co uple of reasons. He was productive when he got touches. The offense could have seen an uptick if he were given more touches. He can create plays after the catch. That is where Auburn lacked production last season. Also, he didn't come back from the porta l to see similar numbers. There was more than likely a promise to get him more involved, and he should be. - Auburn Live

Expect Auburn's revamped receiving corps to be "Husky Fast" in 2022. The Tigers will have no less than three former Hewitt-Trussville High receivers on board this fall with the additions of Miami transfer Dazalin Worsham and incoming freshman Omari Kelly . They join Auburn returnee Ja'Varrius Johnson. Hewitt-Trussville's motto since Josh Floyd took over as coach in 2014? Husky Fast. "It's pretty wild," Floyd said. "They obviously have some needs at that position, so I think all those guys have a chance t o contribute." Johnson, a part of the 2019 Auburn recruiting class, entered the transfer portal in February before opting to return.The 5-foot-10, 159-pounder was Auburn's fifth-leading receiver last season, catching 19 passes for 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 12 games as a redshirt sophomore. He led the team with 14.42 yards per reception. Johnson joins fifth-year senior Shedrick Jackson as one of the Tigers few experienced options at the position. "Ja'Varrius can fly," Floyd said. The injury bug was unkind to the Tigers this spring. In addition to Capers being held out after his surgery, Jackson was limited for most of the spring and Evans suffered an apparent hamstring injury on March 20 that significantly limited his next month of action. Their limitations didn't help a situation in which the Tigers needed as many players to be in the mix as possible. That being said, there were a few receivers who took advantage. Ja'Varrius Johnson was arguably the player on offense who turned the most heads this spring. Johnson saw limited action in his first two years as a Tiger, but he caught the coaches' attentions during the first few practice sessions and kept it up for the brunt of the 15-practice spring. The 5-foot-10, 159-pound Johns on is expected to play slot receiver and has to be viewed as the leading candidate for that role. - Opelika-Auburn News

The name "Ja'Varrius Johnson" has gone from rarely mentioned to a common topic in the span of three weeks of spring practice. The wide receiver is a redshirt sophomore who was plagued by injuries and didn't play a game in 2019 and played just one game in 2020. But he's healthy now, and he's starting to show what he's capable of. To Johnson, being healthy makes all the difference. "That's one of the biggest parts," Johnson said. "When I first came in I had that pelvis injury which led into last year. It was kind of hurting me still a little bit but I battled through it. This year I'm able to go through everything completely without it hurting and I'm staying healthy." Being held back by injury is always tough, Johnson said, but he's been through it befo re. His previous experiences helped him to get through the most recent one, he said. But it's a really good feeling to be able to show what he can do. And people have noticed. Last season, Johnson played in just one game, but it was against Georgia. Afte rwards former coach Gus Malzahn described him as talented and someone who could help Auburn moving forward. After Auburn's top three pass-catchers from 2020 decided to leave for the NFL, it was apparent the door was open for a less-heralded wide receiver to seize the moment and earn more playing time. It's still early in spring practice, but sophomore wide rec eiver Ja'Varrius Johnson seems primed to be that player. Johnson, a 5-foot-10, 159-pound player from Trussville, entered the year having played in only one game during his first two seasons with the Tigers but is already making an impression with the new Auburn coaching staff. Johnson handled first-team slot receiver duties during Thursday's practice - fellow sophomores Kobe Hudson and Elijah Canion were lined up out wide - and also fielded a few punts as he works to potentially be the Tigers' punt retu rner, too.Johnson has a long way to go before the season opener on Sept. 4 arrives, but head coach Bryan Harsin has been impressed by what he's seen from No. 6 on offense. "I think Ja'Varrius has done a good job. He's been one of the more consiste nt players day in and day out just as far as his execution, his preparation," Harsin said after Thursday's practice. "He's played faster and he's done it more consistently. His execution today, I think there was a few plays he was in on - I don't know if it was on him necessarily - if he lined up or was misaligned.
