Velton Gardner, Southern Methodist, Player News

Former Kansas running back Velton Gardner announced on social media that he will be playing for the SMU Mustangs. Gardner was a three-star recruit and the No. 51 athlete in the Class of 2019, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings. Gardner chose the Jayhawks over other scholarship offers from schools like Texas Tech, Kansas State, Arkansas State, BGSU and others. As a true freshman at Kansas, Gardner carried the ball 26 times for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As a sophomore, Gardner saw his role expand, tallying 325 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 72 attempts. Last fall, Gardner was limited to three games, and he ran for 56 yards in those appearances. - 247 Sports

KU football opened its preseason camp without a couple of notable names, as neither returning leading rusher Velton Gardner nor potential starting defensive end Steven Parker were in uniform for the first practice. Leipold said as of Thursday morning he didn't have any updates on the players who were out. "That just kind of came from the training room," the coach said of a list of nine Jayhawks who were unable to go on the first day of camp. "We'll see where that takes us and go from there." Joining junior running back Gardner and sophomore Parker on the list were redshirt freshman linebacker Alonso Person, sophomore receiver Torry Locklin, freshman receivers Majik Rector and Tanaka Scott, junior receiver Kevin Terry, redshirt freshman receiver Jordan Brown and redshirt freshman fullback Jared Casey. - Lawrence Journal World

Gardner might not be associated with the types of game-changing plays Williams delivered at times, but McAnderson thought Gardner was more productive than Williams during KU's 0-4 start. What's more, McAnderson told the Journal-World there may even be some unforeseen positives that come for KU with Gardner becoming the new primary back. "I think what will help everyone," McAnderson said, "is that Velton Gardner is not going to be the first name on the scouting report. Pooka Williams was. Pooka Williams might have been the only name on the scouting report outside of (receiver Andrew) Parchment." Williams garnered that type of attention almost immediately upon making his KU debut. In his first college game, Williams rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns at Central Michigan in 2018, as KU captured its first road win since 2009. When the electric running back from Louisiana announced this week he was heading back home to be with his sick mother, Williams had rushed for 2,382 yards and 12 touchdowns in 26 career games, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

Gardner's debut came with much less fan fare, in 2019. But he finished his freshman season averaging 5.3 yards per carry in his limited opportunities. And Gardner already was KU's leading rusher this year, with 225 yards and 4.8 yards per carry - better than Williams' 196 rushing yards and 3.8 per attempt. "Velton has also been good from the moment he got here," McAnderson said. "But he won't have that kind of 'save us' pressure that the program kind of put on Pooka. I think he'll be a little bit more free, and I think there will be less pressure for him to produce each time he touches the football." - Lawrence Journal World

Pooka Williams is the undisputed star of the Kansas football offense. If you ask some of the Jayhawks, though, the preseason All-Big 12 running back has more than just a backup or sidekick in Velton Gardner. Even though Gardner is entering his sophomore season having not yet carried the ball more than five times in a KU game, at least one of his teammates views Gardner as the co-star in Williams' magic show. Senior receiver Andrew Parchment considers the KU duo one of the best running back combinations in the country. "That's 1A and 1B," Parchment proclaimed earlier this week. A bit of an afterthought in KU's offensive game plan many weeks in 2019, Gardner was expected to be the team's third-string back as a true freshman.

But once Khalil Herbert decided to redshirt and ultimately left the program, Gardner, a three-star Dallas athlete in KU's 2019 recruiting class, got a jumpstart on his college career. All of Gardner's carries came in the final eight games of the season, as he finished with 26 rushing attempts, 138 yards, 5.3 yards per carry and two touchdowns. "Velton takes a lot from Pooka, but Pooka takes a lot from Velton, as well," Parchment said. "They're a very good mix and match together, because I don't feel like we lose anything when Velton's in the game and I don't feel like we lose anything when Pooka's in the game. And it gets very scary when both of them are in the game." - Lawrence Journal World
