Gavin Hardison threw for a touchdown and ran for another TD and Gavin Baechle kicked a 27-yard field goal - his program-record 51st career made field goal - as time expired and UTEP beat Florida Atlantic 24-21 Saturday night. Baechle made field goals of 29 to open the second early in the second quarter and 32 yards with 30 seconds left in the period and FAU took a 7-6 lead into halftime. The senior finished the day 3 for 3 when he made his 15th consecutive field-goal attempt to cap the scoring.

Deion Hankins ran for 138 yards on 17 carries for UTEP (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA). Hardison was 16-of-26 passing for 178 yards with an interception. Hardison scored on a 5-yard run, and then hit Trent Thompson for the 2-point conversion, late in the third quarter and added a 4-yard TD pass to Reynaldo Flores early in the fourth that gave the Miners a 21-14 lead. FAU's N’Kosi Perry threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Austin Evans about 8 minutes later. Morgan Suarez's PAT attempt was blocked and the Miners returned it for a 2-point conversion but a UTEP penalty gave Florida Atlantic (3-5, 2-2) a second chance at the kick, which Suarez made to tie the score at 21-all. - UTEP/AP College Football

Gavin Hardison threw three touchdown passes, including two to Tyrin Smith, Tyrice Knight and Jadrian Taylor each returned a fumble for a score and UTEP beat Charlotte 41-35 Saturday night. UTEP (3-3, 1-1 Conference USA) won in the Eastern time zone for the first time in program history (1-26-1). Chris Reynolds threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Grant DuBose that capped the game's opening drive and gave Charlotte (1-5, 0-2) a 7-0 lead with 9:48 left in the first quarter. UTEP answered with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that culminated when Smith caught his first TD, a 17-yarder, and Gavin Baechle kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Miners the lead for good midway through the second quarter.

Hardison hit Trent Thompson for a 26-yard score with 33 seconds left in the half and Knight's 13-yard fumble return for a touchdown 13 seconds later gave UTEP 24-7 lead at the break. Reynolds threw third-quarter TD passes of 23 yards to Elijah Spencer and 2 yards to DuBose to pull the 49ers to 24-21 but Smith scored on a 58-yard catch-and-run and Baechle kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it a three-point game going into the fourth quarter. Charlotte, on its next drive, had a first-and-goal from the 2 but, after an incomplete pass, ChaVon McEachern fumbled near the goal line and Taylor scooped and scored on a 100-yard return to make it 41-21 with 13:36 to play. Reynolds completed 21 of 37 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns with an interception for Charlotte. - AP College Football

Reynaldo Flores capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Although the Miners (2-3) outgained the Broncos 148-53 in the first half, UTEP didn't take the lead until Hardison hit Jeremiah Ballard with a 42-yard touchdown pass with 2:10 remaining in the second quarter.   UTEP committed a national season-high seven turnovers in its 27-10 loss at New Mexico, including five in the second half. Gavin Hardison threw three interceptions and Calvin Brownholtz was picked off on his only attempt. All three fumbles came in the second half. New Mexico did not convert any of those turnovers into points. In fact, the Lobos have netted just one touchdown on 10 takeaways over three games. - AP College Football

UTEP graduated only 11 players from 2021's bunch and while they also lost top receiver Jacob Cowing to Arizona in the transfer portal, this is an experienced Miners team that many players quietly think is the most talented UTEP has had in years. Leading the charge will be redshirt junior quarterback, Gavin Hardison, who is now entering his third year as UTEP's starter. An All-Conference USA Honorable Mention choice a year ago, Hardison threw for 3,217 yards, 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2021.

But the last game of the season left a bad taste in his mouth; Hardison's fumble late in the fourth quarter vs. Fresno State ended a promising Miners drive that could've tied the game. It's motivated him all offseason. "I've had a lot of goals that I've accomplished this offseason and taking care of the ball is one of them. It's an extremely motivating scene, what happened the last time we played and we're excited to get out here for week 0," said Hardison. - El Paso Times

Gavin Hardison has improved. So much of UTEP's season hinges on a starting quarterback entering his second year at the helm to turn potential and that rocket arm into production and consistency, and as fall camp moves past the halfway point, indications are that's happening. The good throws and right reads are more frequent, the giveaways have been minimized. This is what so much of a successful season will rely on. Stepping up "I think I'm progressing in every aspect of my game so far," Hardison said. "I think I'm seeing everything really well and getting the ball out of my hands. I think I'm doing pretty good so far."

That's something everyone around UTEP football has sensed. "In camp obviously we're throwing a lot of stuff at our quarterbacks, a lot of different schemes and having to make the checks, the things we need to see against various looks," coach Dana Dimel said. "This is the time the quarterback gets a bunch of work in and we think he's progressed greatly throughout camp, really having a lot of savvy and experience to what he's doing. "He's protecting the football extremely well and making some big throws." - El Paso Times

There are many reasons the UTEP football team began fall camp Friday with real optimism that has often been lacking, and is so often the case with a team expecting to make a leap, that begins under center. Sophomore (sort of) Gavin Hardison is beginning his fourth year of college football, his third year at UTEP and his second year as a starter, and as encouraging as his first sophomore year was in 2020, there's more he can do. What Hardison's already done is show special arm talent, leadership, composure - all the traits he'll need to be the elite quarterback everyone around UTEP thinks he can be. The task now is to translate that into tangibles such as improving on his 54 percent completion percentage, his 5-5 touchdown-interception ratio and the Miners' 3-5 record.

The Miners staff feel they've found their guy, they've put more weapons around him than any UTEP quarterback has had since Aaron Jones was in the backfield and he's been given a year of experience as an FBS starter. That sets up this season and Hardison is ready to seize it. "I'm focusing on what I can do to execute every week and attack the opponents," Hardison said after Friday's opening practice, which begins the one-week run-in to the New Mexico State opener on Aug. 28. "My goal is to win games, that's stayed the same, but coach (new offensive coordinator Dave) Warner has brought some new things to my game. "I'm excited to take that into this year." - El Paso Times

UTEP's quarterback battle resolved itself in dramatic fashion as Gavin Hardison now has the job. Freshman quarterback TJ Goodwin, who was battling Hardison for the starter spot in a competition that coach Dana Dimel said Saturday was even, wasn't at Sunday morning's practice. No explanation was given for his absence and no date was set for his return. Coach Dana Dimel explicitly said there were no new positive COVID tests on the team. "Not anything I can talk about right now," Dimel said. When asked if Goodwin was going to transfer, Dimel said, "I'm not going to make any comments about that now."

The turn of events leaves Hardison as the starter. He took all the starter reps Saturday and Sunday and Dimel put a positive spin on that. "That's good, that's important for him to start taking over the role of that and unequivocally having that role," Dimel said. "I think our team will feed off that pretty well. Obviously his play has been really good throughout camp and consistent with what he's doing, getting better and better and his checks are rock-solid. "There are a lot of positives with what he's doing and now we'll be looking at the same guy all the time." - El Paso Times
