Illinois had to lean on Tarique Barnes at inside linebacker last fall because he was basically the only one that stayed healthy. Calvin Hart Jr. suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter of the season opener against Nebraska, and Jake Ha nsen was lost for the year after another torn ACL in late October. Barnes was the constant, making 10 starts in 12 games and finishing with 80 tackles (one shy of Sydney Brown's team high), six tackles for loss, five pass breakups, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception.Barnes will be back in the middle of the Illinois defense this season as a likely starter. Hart's return this spring allowed the two to develop some important on-field chemistry given Hart's injury last fall after tran sferring from North Carolina State meant they didn't play much together. The Illini will again need Barnes to be the type of playmaker that generated three turnovers last fall, but after one season, defensive coordinator Ryan Walters knows he has a solid performer in a key position. - News Gazette Tribune

Linebacker Tarique Barnes is ready to return to the Illinois defense's starting lineup after a leg injury cut short his 2020 season, during which he amassed 25 tackles, 11/2 tackles for loss, one sack and one interception in just five games. "I took it o ne day at a time and kept my head on," Barnes said of his recovery. "You've got to think about coming back before you can put everything before that." Now completely recovered, Barnes is looking to take the next step with the help of new strength and con ditioning coach Tank Wright. "Personally, I wanted a body change," Barnes said. "(Wright) definitely helped me put more muscle on. I just feel myself getting in better shape." The added size should allow Barnes to continue to play a big role within a def ense that also includes standout linebackers Jake Hansen, Khalan Tolson and Calvin Hart Jr. - News Gazette Tribune

Leading into its Nov. 21 game at Nebraska, Illinois football's defense may have had its healthiest group of contributors available since before the 2020 season began. Defensive tackle Jamal Woods made his return from a two-game absence. Linebacker Milo E ifler and defensive lineman Keith Randolph Jr. still were sidelined, but coach Lovie Smith could rely on a steady stream of veteran playmakers. That showed when the Illini blew past the Cornhuskers 41-23 and forced five turnovers. But that victory also i ncluded a new crack to Illinois' health. Miles Smith was searching out linebackers for the Class of 2019 and stumbled on Tarique Barnes out of Memphis. Smith liked Barnes' film, particularly his speed. The Illinois football team had a heavy early signing period in that class but Barnes was a Fe bruary signing. It largely flew under the radar in a class that included Marquez Beason and Isaiah Williams, a pair of highly-coveted four-star prospects. But Barnes came to training camp last season and looked good, showing his speed and physicality. He played in all 13 games, mostly on special teams. Entering this year, he was in the two-deep, but had defensive stalwart Jake Hansen ahead of him at middle linebacker.Hansen was injured late in the first half on Friday, in a 45-7 loss to No. 14 Wi sconsin at an empty Camp Randall Stadium. It was Barnes' time and he was ready. He nearly gave Illinois the spark it needed with a 39-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown late in the second quarter to pull within seven, 14-7, before the Badgers clobbered their way to a win. "It was supposed to be my player anyway," Barnes said. "Him catching the ball was kind of get right after that. Starting going down, the ball was kind of loose and punched it out. It slipped under everybody else. I saw it rolling out . Picked up and scored. That's the first thing we go for." Barnes was a bright spot for the Illini. He had a team-high 11 tackles, added a sack and a tackle for a loss. - Herald-Review Times
