Miyan Williams, Ohio State, Player News

  01/15/23 - RB Miyan WilliamsrJr/2024, Ohio State, 5-09, 229 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson, coming off an injury-hampered 2022 season, thinks he is ready for a challenge in 2023. And he may get one. Running back Miyan Williams announced he would return instead of pursuing the NFL. Dallan Hayden impressed as a freshman. Henderson welcomes the challenge. "I want it bad," he said. "I'll do anything, and I'm going to definitely do what I've got to do. Some people know who I am, and I'm going to definitely show that again next year." - Columbus Dispatch

When healthy, Miyan Williams formed half of an effective Ohio State football running back duo in 2022. Williams didn't explicitly announce he will be back with the Buckeyes for a fourth season in 2023. But posts on Twitter and Instagram both said "Unfinished business," hinting that the Cincinnati native will remain at OSU rather than pursue early entry into the NFL Draft. Williams then confirmed to the Columbus Dispatch that those posts did mean he will be back in Columbus this fall.

Williams' Instagram post also included the hashtag #ForGranny. That is presumably a reference to Tryphena Williams, his grandmother who died in early September. Williams attended her funeral on the Thursday prior to the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin, then rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. He posted an even bigger performance a week later, totaling 189 yards and five touchdowns on 21 carries in a rout of Rutgers. Williams also topped 100 yards in victories over Northwestern and Indiana. Yet he battled through a season-long series of injuries to his hand, ankle and knee. He also came down with a stomach bug prior to the Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against Georgia, which limited his playing time. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State running back Miyan Williams is a junior and eligible to go to the NFL, but he'd unlikely to be a high draft pick. He and TreVeyon Henderson could be a formidable duo if they can stay healthy. It's always possible that one could transfer if unhappy with sharing the workload. Dallan Hayden proved capable of handling a significant role. The Buckeyes also should get a boost from the return of Evan Pryor from an ACL injury. He's particularly a threat as a pass-catcher. - Columbus Dispatch

  11/12/22 - RB Miyan WilliamsrJr/2024, Ohio State, 5-09, 229 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Ohio State running back Miyan Williams injured his right leg and had to be carted the locker room in the first half of Saturday's game against Indiana. Williams already had rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown when he went down awkwardly on his ankle after a 4-yard gain with 2:17 left in the first half and the No. 2 Buckeyes leading Indiana 28-7. Williams has carried the load the last two games with TreVeyon Henderson sidelined with an injury. Ohio State hasn't disclosed details of Henderson's injury, but it could be problematic if both experienced backs are on the shelf for the matchup with No. 3 Michigan in two weeks. Williams broke away for a 48-yard touchdown run earlier in the second quarter, recording his fourth 100-yard game of the season. True freshman Dallen Hayden, who also had a first-half touchdown run, is the primary backup to Williams. - AP College Football

Miyan Williams ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 2 Ohio State got all it could handle from Northwestern in a 21-7 victory on a rainy and windy Saturday. The Buckeyes (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten, No. 2 CFP) came in tied with Tennessee in the AP poll and trailing only the Volunteers in the season's first College Football Playoff rankings. But what figured to be an easy win turned into a struggle. Ohio State didn't score until the closing minutes of the first half, when Emeka Egbuka ran it in from the 15, with the rain and whipping wind not to mention Northwestern's physical play creating havoc. Williams gave Ohio State the lead with a 27-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He made it 21-7 when he scored from the 2 with about 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the game after C.J. Stroud broke a 44-yard run, and the Buckeyes came away with a tougher-than-expected win.

Stroud, the Big Ten leader in yards passing, set a career low with 76. He completed just 10 of 26 passes in his only game this year without a touchdown throw. Stroud, who came in with minus-4 yards rushing, ran for 79, helping the Buckeyes pick up their 10th straight win against Northwestern and 34th in the past 35 meetings. The Wildcats (1-8, 1-5) dropped their eighth straight, matching their worst skid since the 1998 team lost eight in a row. They are 5-17 since falling to Ohio State in the 2020 conference championship game. Evan Hull ran for 122 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Sullivan threw for 79, completing 10 of 14 passes, and the Wildcats remained winless since beating Nebraska in Ireland to start the season. Ohio State came came in averaging 48.9 points - second only to Tennessee - and hadn't scored fewer than 44 in a Big Ten game. But the ugly conditions and Northwestern's physical play in the trenches made for a tough time. - AP College Football

Miyan Williams carried the load for No. 3 Ohio State, rushing for a career-high 189 yards and five touchdowns as the Buckeyes beat Rutgers 49-10 on Saturday. Williams got the opportunity for a career-high 21 carries when TreVeyon Henderson became a late scratch because of an unspecified injury. Williams, a third-year back, exploded for a 70-yard TD romp in the third quarter and also had four short scoring plunges. A 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, his fifth of the game, tied an Ohio State record. He's the first back to rush for five touchdowns in a game since Keith Byars in 1984. Pete Johnson also did it in 1974. "Miyan was running hard to day," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "You know, he turns a 3-yard run into a 5-yard. He just keeps us on schedule. And it was tough down there in the red zone. (Rutgers) kind of dug in a few times. Miyan had a really good day for us." Williams stepped up with the best game of his Ohio State career on a day when quarterback C.J. Stroud wasn't as sharp as usual.

The Heisman Trophy favorite completed 13 of 22 passes for a career-low 154 yards with two touchdown and an interception. Rutgers jumped out a 7-0 lead after Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka fumbled a punt return after the opening drive, setting up a 14-yard TD pass from Evan Simon to Sean Ryan. It was the first time the Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) had trailed in a game since going down 3-0 early in the opener against Notre Dame. Ohio State tied it on the next possession when Williams' 32-yard rumble set up his 2-yard TD two plays later. - Ohio State/AP College Football

  07/06/22 - RB Miyan WilliamsrJr/2024, Ohio State, 5-09, 229 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Friday, July 1, Ohio State running back Miyan Williams was back at Winton Woods High School for the commitment announcement of rising senior Jermaine Mathews Jr. Mathews was just a freshman when Williams wrapped up his Warrior career in 2019. The bearded Buckeye is actually down two pounds at 225 on his 5-foot-9-inch frame but looks as chiseled as ever thanks to Ohio State strength coach Mickey Marotti's crew.

When Mathews arrives in 2023, Williams will still have two seasons of eligibility left due to college players gaining an extra year during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic season. "It's definitely a blessing he had an opportunity to commit up there," Williams said. "I'm proud of my boy. He's definitely a hard worker, a great player, a great addition to BIA. New Buckeye!" BIA refers to the Buckeye secondary proclaiming themselves as the "Best In America." - Columbus Dispatch
