Before the mustard bottle and golf ball were hurled inside Neyland Stadium during the waning moments of Tennessee's 31-26 loss to Ole Miss last October, running back Jabari Small of the Volunteers had already realized he needed to get bigger and stronger . "I was running real hard in the first half," Small said Tuesday, "but in the second half, I was like, 'Dang, I'm tired. I'm beat up. I can't even feel my shoulders.' "That's when it clicked to where I was like, 'I've got to address this." Small was lis ted last year at 5-foot-11 and 206 pounds, but running backs coach Jerry Mack said Tuesday that he weighed 199 in the Music City Bowl. In that 48-45 loss to Purdue, Small had a season-high 26 rushes for a season-high 180 yards, but it was Jaylen Wright w ho received the critical carries during the fourth quarter and in overtime.Mack said Small is now between 212 and 215 pounds and added that there is a noticeable difference in his ability to break arm and shoestring tackles. "He's added armor to h is body," Mack said, "and that is going to help him down the road. Being able to finish games is what we've been talking about, and the added weight should help him a ton to try to increase his carries. Obviously in fall camp, we're just trying to make s ure he understands how to finish the practice." Small, a junior out of Briarcrest Christian in Memphis, was plenty effective a year ago in rushing 141 times for 796 yards (5.6 per carry) and nine touchdowns. He was sidelined for wins over Tennessee Tech and South Carolina, and he and Mack were apparently on the same page at season's end. "Jabari knew that he should've been a 1,000-yard back at the end of last year," Mack said. "He would have been if he had been able to play in all those games and do wha t he's supposed to do. There is no reason he couldn't be one of the elite players in the SEC, but he knew he was going to have to get better." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

If Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel's offense is going to work, its got to start on the ground. The Volunteers' 38-6 season-opening win over Bowling Green on Thursday night was a perfect example of how the first-year coach's up-tempo attack can function on all cylinders. The Vols struggled with just 67 yards rushing and led 14-6 at halftime. With a focus on the ground assault, they amassed 259 yards and separated themselves from the Falcons.Jabari Small finished with 124 yards rushing with two to uchdowns. Tiyon Evans added 116 yards on the ground and a touchdown. "Offensively there were times where we were clicking, played efficiently," said Heupel. "Other times there were things we could control that we didn't operate as efficiently as we can. Going to need to clean those things up as we move deeper into the season." Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton, a transfer from Michigan, ran for two scores and was 11-of-23 passing for 140 yards. His only completion of the second half was a 40-yard touchdo wn to Cedric Tillman. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh was asked Saturday afternoon to single out those who have performed well through two spring football practices for the Volunteers, and he was happy to oblige. "Jabari Small has been really impressive," Golesh s aid. "We were all excited to see what he can do. As far as guys who have stood out, I would say that Jabari has been one for sure, and probably that O-line group as a whole. "They are knowing how the operation works and are getting on the right people an d are playing fast." Small is Tennessee's top returning rusher from last year, having amassed 26 carries for 117 yards as a freshman. His best showing was 48 yards on six carries in the 42-17 thumping of a depleted Vanderbilt, but he did play in all 10 g ames. - Chattanooga Times Free Press
