Southern California receiver Brenden Rice will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. The son of Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice made the announcement Friday on social media. Rice was seventh nationally with 12 recei ving touchdowns. He also had 45 receptions for 791 yards and averaged 17.6 yards per catch. He was at Colorado in 2020 and '21 before spending the past two seasons at USC. Earlier this week, Rice accepted an invitation to attend the Senior Bowl in Januar y. This is the first year the game is allowing draft-eligible underclassmen to participate. - AP College Football

Brenden Rice provided a glimpse of potential greatness as a true freshman with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2020. It was just a starting point, however, and the talented receiver from Chandler, Ariz., shook his head and smiled when asked recently what he di d to improve this offseason. "A lot," said Rice, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound second-year freshman. "I was very out of control in my routes. I was out of control in my running. I didn't really know how to make everything look the same." Despite that, Rice caugh t six passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns in CU's five-game regular season in 2020. Including a punt return for a touchdown, he scored on three of the nine plays on which he touched the ball.CU head coach Karl Dorrell, offensive coordinator/re ceivers coach Darrin Chiaverini, and offensive quality control coach Reggie Moore have all spent time working with Rice in preparation for this season. "His game has really gone to the next level," Chiaverini said. "He's got to still be consistent catchi ng the football, but he's explosive." Considering his surname and position, it seems fitting that Rice is developing into one of the Buffs' best receivers. After all, his biological father, Jerry Rice, is the greatest receiver to ever play the game, with NFL records for receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895) and total touchdowns (208) that might never get broken. Rice, however, is proud of the fact that he's become a potential star on his own merit. - Daily Camera

It was on a punt return that Brenden Rice first showed his explosiveness last season. When the Colorado receiver thinks about standing at the goal line to field a kickoff, though, that's what gets him excited. "That ball, just looking at the ball in the air and the twists and turns, oh my goodness," he said. "It's something different." As a true freshman last season, Rice showed that he might be something different for the Buffaloes. With a 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame, solid speed and exceptional genes, R ice had a debut season in 2020 that was electric at times, and might just be the launching point for a stellar career at CU.The son of NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, who is considered by many to be the greatest receiver to ever play the game, Rice caught six passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown and averaged 18.5 yards on two kickoff returns in CU's COVID-19-shortened season. Despite playing among a group loaded with talent, Rice scored on three of the n ine times he touched the ball. "Being under the wing of KD Nixon and people like Maurice Bell, Vontae Shenault, the confidence factor is everything in the wide receiver game," Rice said. "You see (former NFL star) Chad Ochocinco, and all these great wide receivers; if you don't have confidence, you can't take that next step. "As soon as I caught my first touchdown, I got my feel for the game and it truly balanced out, and I felt as though I can truly come in here and make an impact, day in and day out i n every single game." - Daily Camera

The last thing Brenden Rice wanted was to get taken down by a punter. "I made a cut downfield heading towards the kicker, and hopefully I could slip him because I know if I get tackled by the kicker, my teammates are gonna talk crap to me all the time," Colorado's freshman receiver said. Fortunately, he didn't, making a move on Utah punter Ben Lennon and turning on the jets to finish an 81-yard punt return for touchdown in CU's 38-21 loss to the Utes on Saturday at Folsom Field. Between the loss, an inj ury to star linebacker Nate Landman and other miscues, the Buffs didn't have much to celebrate on Saturday. Rice, however, provided a spark. He's the first CU player to score on a punt r eturn and reception in the same game since Walter Stanley on Sept. 12, 1981. Ironically, Stanley's son, Dimitri, had key blocks on both of Rice's touchdowns. "It's good to see a young player like Brenden Rice make some of the plays he made today," head c oach Karl Dorrell said. "He's a good young player. He's a player that we feel he's got a lot of upside and he's trending up and he's getting better week after week.
