South Carolina's home game with South Carolina State has been moved up from Saturday to Thursday night due the approach of Hurricane Ian. South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner announced the switch Tuesday. The approaching storm is expected to make landfall in Florida this week. "Due to the potential impact of the hurricane on Columbia and the surrounding area, it is in the best interest of safety to play the game on Thursday rather than Saturday afternoon," Tanner said in a statement. South Caroli na had spoken with the office of Gov. Henry McMaster and other state officials, state and local law enforcement who routinely help at games. Tanner said he was confident they could safely host the game Thursday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. A planned reunion of the 2010-2013 football teams coached by Steve Spurrier was postponed. - AP College Football

Marshawn Lloyd ran for a career-high 169 yards and three touchdowns as South Carolina scored on its first eight possessions to put away Charlotte 56-20 on Saturday night. The win ended a two-game losing streak for the Gamecocks (2-2) - and was a welcome performance for an offense stuck near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference this season. Lloyd had scoring runs of 25, 14 and 7 yards, the first two that left fans' jaws dropped and Charlotte defenders in disbelief. On the first, Lloyd cleanly hurdle d safety Wayne Jones in the open field on the way to the end zone. On his second, Lloyd was stood up for what looked like a short gain before breaking free to put South Carolina ahead 28-14.Lloyd had some help on the last, converting after Gamecoc ks linebacker Brad Johnson intercepted Charlotte's Chris Reynolds deep in 49ers territory. Lloyd calmly found the end zone a final time and finished with South Carolina's most rushing yards since Kevin Harris gained 182 against North Carolina in its 38-2 1 Duke's Mayo Bowl victory last New Year's Eve. Charlotte (1-4) of Conference USA entered with the country's 30th best passing attack at 289 yards a game and the one of the worst rushing defenses (129 out of 131) in the NCAA at 243 yards allowed per game . Both were evident at South Carolina. - South Carolina/AP College Football

He returned last year. MarShawn Lloyd played in 12 games during South Carolina's 2021 season, his debut in college football after missing all of his true freshman year while recovering from a torn ACL. Why is this even a question? Lloyd was hurt, came ba ck, played, end of story. Except he was wondering. Am I OK? Am I fully back? Do I want this badly enough? He couldn't definitively say no, but he wasn't risking a neck sprain while furiously nodding yes. The best Lloyd could figure it, he was lying to hi mself. "I feel like playing this game, you need confidence. You don't want to have to think about. On top of football with the plays, I was thinking about, "Can I do this?," Lloyd said. "That's a big no if you're playing a physical sport like this." >He was cleared medically, he passed every test. But his situation was like that of the man he's most often compared to. Marcus Lattimore was at his physical peak when trying to recover from the devastating knee injury that ended his junior season at U SC and led him to declare for the NFL, trying to salvage whatever was left of his career. He was in tip-top shape with the San Francisco 49ers, his knee was reconstructed, he was ready to play. Yet he knew what nobody else did. Lattimore just didn't feel right. The effort and desire to get back from the injury had clearly been proven. But whenever out there on the field, Lattimore simply didn't feel like he did before the injury. - The Post and Courier

The two-headed rushing attack of Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White is no more, as each player is off to the NFL. That leaves South Carolina in need of a lead back. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has said he'd prefer to have a No. 1 guy rather th an rotate a few players in and out at tailback. That said, the Gamecocks have options. Wake Forest transfer Christian Beal-Smith led the Demon Deacons in rushing each of the last two years - including in 2020 when he shared the backfield with eventual He isman Trophy contender Kenneth Walker III. With one year of eligibility remaining, expect him to be squarely in the mix.MarShawn Lloyd is the other big factor here. The former top-65 recruit has been limited during his South Carolina by an ACL tea r he suffered in fall camp as a freshman. Now entering his third year in the program, Beamer and his staff are hopeful he's back to full-go. Lloyd looked the part of the speedster he was billed as coming out of high school during his limited reps last se ason. He'll have every opportunity to be the lead back in 2022, and it's not completely inconceivable he and Beal-Smith end up splitting time, despite Satterfield's preference. - Rock Hill Herald

Preseason camp began in 2020 with freshman MarShawn Lloyd expected to be the belle of the ball as he entered with prep accolades and recruiting rankings not seen since Marcus Lattimore a decade earlier. Following Lloyd's torn ACL the first week of practi ce, it was the previously anonymous Kevin Harris who burst into the SEC's consciousness with a 1,000-yard season. Harris returned for 2021 but a preseason back injury had him fighting uphill. Lloyd played but was still getting back to form after a year a way, and it was ZaQuandre White, then Juju McDowell, who shouldered the rushing load.Amos played in three games in 2020, averaging a robust 5.5 yards per carry. He redshirted last year, leaving him four future seasons to show why he was recruited, assuming he wants to take his COVID year. And this season, with Harris and White gone, could be it. But Lloyd is back and looking better than he did before his freshman year, according to the coaches. And McDowell also returns, although he'll play more of a hybrid receiver/wide-back role instead of toting the rock 20 times a game. - The Post and Courier

The story was already written. MarShawn Lloyd was going to show up and live up to every shred of the grand expectations placed on him as South Carolina's highest-rated running back signee since Marcus Lattimore. He would lead the Gamecocks back from a fo rgettable 4-8 season in 2019 and make 2020 the start of USC's climb back to respectability. The story wound up being the five-millimeter strand of tissue, no bigger than the eraser on a pencil, threaded through Lloyd's knee and helping connect the bones of his left leg.On the second day of preseason camp, less than a month before Lloyd would be unveiled to the world and would prove to all that the hype wasn't just that, Lloyd planted his cleat in the ground in a non-contact drill and felt somethi ng give. His left ACL was torn. Lloyd's season was over before it began. Nine months later, Lloyd is about to start the most important phase of his recovery. He was held out of spring practice because he wasn't completely ready, but the next month will l ight the beacon on what was taken from him last year. "I should be good around June. I'm going to go full-go pretty much in June, with workouts, conditioning, everything, cutting," Lloyd said. "Then by camp, I'll be ready to go." - The Post and Courier

South Carolina has lost one of its most anticipated offensive newcomers for the season after tailback MarShawn Lloyd tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at practice. Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said it was a non-contact injury during w orkouts Wednesday. "He just planted his foot and tore his ACL," Muschamp said. Lloyd is a 5-foot-9, 210 pound running back from Wilmington, Delaware. He was considered the country's fourth-best tailback prospect by Rivals and the fifth best by 247 Sports . Lloyd had enrolled in the spring and was expected to play a big role in the backfield, where last year's leading rushers in Tavien Feaster and Rico Dowdle were both seniors last season. There is no date set for Lloyd's surgery. - AP College Football
