One of Penn State's best defenders will return for the 2023 season. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs announced Tuesday afternoon that he will be staying with the Nittany Lions next season rather than entering the 2023 NFL Draft. He made the announcement via Twit ter. Jacobs took another step forward in his third year with the program, tallying 52 tackles, four sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.He was a playmaker at the second level of the Penn State defense, showing off his ability to make a diff erence with splash plays throughout the season. The third-year linebacker capped off his season with arguably his best game against the Utah Utes in the Rose Bowl. He finished the game with two sacks and helped put the Utes away on the Nittany Lions' way to a 35-21 victory. With Jacobs returning, the second level of the defense is solidified with him and fellow linebacker Abdul Carter being two of the best players on the defense. - Centre Times

Some time after the Rose Bowl ends on Jan. 2, Curtis Jacobs will announce his decision - either he'll return to Penn State next season or he'll enter the 2023 NFL Draft. The decision is one worth pondering for the Penn State linebacker, who has come a lo ng way this season. Jacobs was someone defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said he wanted to see more growth out of during spring practice, and now Diaz - who also coaches the team's linebackers - praised the linebacker for what he proved this season. "It's funny because now we forget, Curtis had never played in the box," Diaz said. "That's a different world. ... So the first question is, can you roll your sleeves up and get down and dirty inside the box. Now we know the answer (is) yes. ... His ability to play SAM and WILL so (Jacobs and Abdul Carter) could be on the field at the same time, that's no easy thing. That shows you what type of football IQ that Curt has."Jacobs deferred some of the credit for his success this season to Diaz, who joined the staff after the 2021 season. He said the season has gone well for him, and pointed to some of the versatility his coordinator mentioned. He knows the system Diaz utilizes - and the type of mentality he wants his players to have - allowed him to evol ve and make much more progress this year as a defender. "It's been amazing," Jacobs said. "It's been a lot more aggressive approach. I feel like I can be a lot more of an aggressive linebacker in this system. And I feel like it's really showed my talent. " Part of the growth for Jacobs has been how he's developed off the field. The always jovial linebacker plays the game with joy - previously mentioning that he even laughs after making a big hit - and has now combined that with leadership ability off the field. - Centre Times

Let's take a look at how Penn State stacks up at linebacker heading into the 2022 season. Two of the starting spots should be solidified, with the third down to only a couple options entering the team's fall camp. While two starters are gone in Ellis Bro oks and Brandon Smith, added experience and a position switch has the second level of the defense ready to be a positive once again this season. Curtis Jacobs is the clear standout for Penn State and should easily be the most impactful player at the spot . He's a gifted athlete who took time to grow into playing linebacker but hit his stride as the 2021 season rolled on.He previously attributed his growth to not overthinking too much on the field and increasing his work habits off the field, watch ing film with Brooks on weekends. Now he'll be tasked with being the unit's best player as a force against the run and the pass. He plays the run well, finding ball carriers and bringing them down behind the line of scrimmage with his instincts and stren gth. Those instincts come in handy when attacking the quarterback as well, where he excels as a blitzer. Jacobs will have to keep working on his coverage ability, but he has the traits to be an asset there as he continues to get comfortable operating in the middle of zone defenses. - Centre Times

Jacobs is the best linebacker at Penn State and should be in position to get drafted if he chooses to leave early next year. That being said, he still has steps to take to get there. Jacobs flies all over the field and is one of the best athletes the Nit tany Lions have. He uses that to make plays in both the run and passing game, relying on his instincts to make plays. He just has to combine his high-level play with more experience and refinement and he should see his name rise up draft boards. - Tribun e Review

Penn State's linebacker group is replacing 2021 starters Brandon Smith and Ellis Brooks. Returning starter Curtis Jacobs, who is expected to move from the weak side to the strong side, has a chance to be one of the Big Ten's best.
