One-time Clemson starting defensive back Fred Davis II, sued by an accident victim when he and teammate Malcolm Greene allegedly were seen racing on a roadway near campus, has decided to transfer. Davis announced his intention Sunday, a day after the Tig ers won the Atlantic Coast Conference title in a 39-10 win over North Carolina. "I'm officially entering the transfer portal on Dec. 5," was all Davis said in post along with a photo of him lined up prior to a snap of a home game.Davis and Greene were sued in Pickens County Common Pleas Court, a form of civil court, this past October by victim Karen Alvarez, who was driving a mail delivery truck that Davis' vehicle crashed into. Davis, a junior, was arrested and charged with reckless driving in t he summer of 2021. The charge is a misdemeanor in South Carolina. On the field, Davis played 20 games his first two seasons and began this year as a starter in Clemson's first four games. He missed the final six games after injuring his ankle. - AP Colle ge Football

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney said sophomore cornerback Fred Davis will have to deal with "lots of consequences...for a long, long time" after being charged with reckless driving following an accident that left a mail carrier seriously injured. Dav is was arrested, then released, on Sunday after police said probable cause was found to charge him in the incident. Swinney spoke Friday for the first time about what happened. "We had one incredibly unfortunate situation with Fred Davis last month," Swi nney said. "I'm thankful to the good Lord and all those people, the responders that were on the scene there that what was an incredibly serious situation didn't become tragic." Reports indicated that on the afternoon of July 21, Davis was going 115 mph i n a 55 mph zone in a black Dodge Charger going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93.He left 290 feet of skid marks before colliding with a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier truck at 70 mph, Clemson police said. The truck was still in motion at the time of the crash. The USPS driver, who was found hanging upside down partially outside of the truck and still buckled, was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, police said. Davis gave responding police officers a written statement before complaining of a leg injury, according to police. He was then transported to Oconee Medical Center. "This is not of his character," Swinney said. "I'm incredibly disappointed in his decision-making. It's that simple. Just a poor decision. He's going to d eal with lots of consequences." - The State

A Clemson football player slammed on brakes before he crashed into the back of a mail carrier at 70 mph. That detail and more are in a supplemental report regarding Clemson sophomore cornerback Fred Davis's car wreck that was released by Clemson police o n Monday morning. According to the report, Davis was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger with a temporary Alabama plate at 115 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93 on the afternoon of July 21. He left 290 feet of ski d marks and lost 45 mph, hitting the USPS mail carrier truck, which was still in motion, at 70 mph. "Further time and distance studies were conducted and it was determined that at the traveling speed of 115MPH Davis closed a distance of approximately 833 feet in five seconds," the report stated. On Sunday, Davis turned himself in to Clemson police to face a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. He was booked and released. "Had Davis been operating his vehicle in a safe manner this collision woul d not have occurred," the report concludes, noting Davis had plenty of space to stop safely if he had been driving within the speed limit. Clemson athletics told The State on Sunday that Davis remains with the team and will be subject to "internal discip line for misdemeanor charges" in line with the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook. - The State
