Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting were remembered Monday by their head coach as "all good kids." Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D'Sean Perry were juniors returning to campus from a class trip to see a pla y Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were also members of the Virginia football team, journeying through periods of transition in their careers - whether it was bouncing back from a season-ending injury, changing positions on the team or transferring in from another school. "They were all good kids," head football coach Tony Elliott said early Monday afternoon. He said he would talk about the victims "when the time is right." The shooting happened just after 10:15 p.m. Sunday as a charter bus full of students returned from seeing a play in Washington.University President Jim Ryan said authorities did not have a "full understanding" of the motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police on Monday captured a university student, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 22, whom they say is suspected of shooting the three football players and wounding two others. Jones had once played on the football team, but had not been a member of the team for a t least a year, police said. Davis was a 6-foot-7 wide receiver from Dorchester, South Carolina. He finished the 2020 season ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for average yards per reception, among many other accolades . - AP College Football

Wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. already had one breakout campaign as a freshman in 2020, but is in need of another after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. The 6-foot-7, 224-pounder averaged 25.8 yards per catch two years ago and is a big-play threat. The next few weeks will be important for him as he tries to find his place in a position group featuring Wicks, Keytaon Thompson and Billy Kemp. "Lavel seems like he's in a better place mentally, and physically, he looks better," than the spring, Kitchings said, "… so he's about a year and a half removed [from the injury], so he's moving around better and has got little more confidence in it. We've got these 30 practices and hopefully he'll be better going into Richmond than he is right now." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

The Virginia football team's roster has suffered a major blow this spring, losing two potential starters for at least most of the fall season. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Monday that sophomore wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. and junior outside l inebacker Chico Bennett Jr. have suffered ACL injuries. "That's always the risk of spring practice," Mendenhall said. The earliest return for the two impact players is November. UVa's head coach said those are the only two major injuries suffered this sp ring.Mendenhall added that Davis' injury occurred when the receiver became tangled up with a defensive back during a practice session. Bennett's injury came in a non-contact setting. Neither injury occurred during a full-contact period, but Menden hall wouldn't change anything about how the Cavaliers handled their practice routine. "The only way to really avoid that is not practice in the spring," Mendenhall said of the significant injuries. Davis was expected to be a starter at wide receiver for UVa after a tremendous first season. The 6-foot-7 target caught 20 passes for 515 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

After an impressive showing against Duke, freshman wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. and senior linebacker Zane Zandier received honors from the ACC on Monday. Davis Jr. earned both ACC Receiver of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week accolades. The 6-foot-7 freshman hauled in four receptions for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He led the Cavaliers in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns against Duke. Asked during a media session Monday what makes Davis Jr. tough to cover, senior cornerback Nick Grant offered a perfect description of why the freshman presents a major matchup problem. "Other than he's 6'7"?" Grant asked with a smile. Davis Jr. used his size well against Duke, and he's used it well in practice. Coaches and defensive backs heap pr aise onto the newcomer. "He makes circus catches all the time," Grant said. "I mean if he's in the back of the end zone, the ball is his. You might as well just count it to him. He jumps out the gym, and he's already 6-7, so it's very hard." - Charlottes ville Daily Progress
