Michigan's football program received a massive boost this offseason when star running back Blake Corum announced he was returning for his senior season. But the 2022 Heisman Trophy candidate won't back to 100% during spring practices as he recovers from surgery on his left knee in early December. "Probably will be full-go sometime around the start of June for the full summer cycle," head coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday, talking with media two practices into the spring cycle. Although Corum isn't partic ipating in drills, Harbaugh said he has been at the team's facilities every day rehabbing and receiving treatment."Give it the time that's needed to recover and build the strength back and make sure that he's in a in a great place," Harbaugh said. "Every guy that's not participating in spring ball, they're actively continuing strength and conditioning. They're actively fulfilling the protocols that the doctors have for their rehabilitation. I don't see anybody loafing or taking it easy. They stil l got the sweat all over the shirt, so it's good. Guys are doing what the experts are telling them to do right now." The 5-foot-8, 210-pound Corum was among the nation's rushing leaders last season before suffering a knee injury late in the first half ag ainst Illinois on Nov. 19. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told NCAA investigators in multiple meetings this week that he will not agree to an unethical conduct charge, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on con dition of anonymity because details of the investigation have not been shared publicly. Michigan announced two weeks ago that it received a notice of allegations from the NCAA that the governing body is looking into potential rules infractions within the football program. The investigation involves impermissible texts and calls - including some by Harbaugh - to high school prospects during part of a pandemic-related dead period for contact with potential recruits.The NCAA also is looking at wheth er a member of Michigan's off-field football staff violated rules by doing on-the-field coaching during practice. Harbaugh is accused of not being forthcoming about the potential violations, and the NCAA considers that unethical conduct and a Level I inf raction. A text message was sent to Harbaugh on Thursday night, seeking comment. While the football program is dealing with an NCAA investigation, co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss is on leave amid an investigation by university police into a report of computer access crimes over a three-day span last month at the team's training facility. - AP College Football

Michigan football has its coach for the 2023 season and beyond: Jim Harbaugh. University of Michigan President Santa Ono sent out a message on Monday afternoon that Harbaugh had personally told him he will come back to Ann Arbor next year, officially put ting to bed any worries about his desires to return to the NFL for this hiring cycle. Sources close to the situation have told the Free Press that a contract extension is in the works for Harbaugh that would include a pay raise and a bigger buyout from h is contract.The sources were granted anonymity because they are not at liberty to speak publicly on the ongoing negotiations. Harbaugh has signed a new deal with U-M each of the last two years. The first in 2021 cut his $8 million per year salary in half. Then after the first of two Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff seasons, Harbaugh's new deal was for about $8.34 million a year and a $3 million buyout that decreases by $750,000 each Jan. 11 through the duration of the deal, curre nt set to expire after the 2026 season. - Detroit Free Press

Michigan got a blast of good news on Monday, with running back Blake Corum announcing plans to return for the 2023 season. Corum made the move public on The Rich Eisen Show, calling it a "tough decision" that kept him up at night. "A lot of nights I was coming back, a lot of nights I was going to the draft," Corum, who just a few weeks ago said he was split, "50/50," said. "I'm a Michigan man through and through. I love playing for Michigan, playing in the Big House, the community and interacting with e veryone.Corum, who will be a senior next year and is poised to graduate, said he has "unfinished business" to take care of after having his 2022 season cut short by injury. "I don't like the way I went out," Corum said. "I'm coming back for it all ." Michigan football's star running back Blake Corum isn't done in college just yet. Corum, who had a breakout season for the Wolverines in 2022, announced Monday afternoon on Michigan graduate Rich Eisen's show he will return to Ann Arbor for his senior se ason because he feels he has "unfinished business." "I'm a Michigan man through and through," he said. "I love playing for the University of Michigan. I love going to the big house and leaving it all on the field. I love the community, I love interacting with everyone. It was a tough decision, it was a business decision, but I feel like I have unfinished business. "I didn't like the way I went out in the Big House, I don't like people remembering me being hurt, so I will be coming back for it all next y ear."Corum was on pace to be possibly the best running back in the country last season before a knee injury late in the first half of Michigan's home finale against Illinois derailed the remainder of the season. In an effort to help Michigan football keep several key players, including leading rusher and consensus All-American Blake Corum, for the 2023 season, Valiant Management Group has created a new crowdsourcing financial campaign. The "One More Year Fund" l aunched on Sunday in an effort to help the Wolverines retain core players, Corum, offensive linemen Zak Zinter and Trevor Keegan and receiver Cornelius Johnson. The entirety of funds raised will go to the athletes. If any of these players opt to not retu rn for the upcoming season, the money will be distributed to those who return. "This campaign is an important step in the evolution of NIL activity at Michigan as it will marry Valiant's existing substantial NIL resources with the even broader capabiliti es of Michigan supporters around the world to help ensure the continued success of the Michigan Football Team," Jared Wangler, founder and CEO of Valiant Management, said in a statement to The Detroit News.Michigan is coming off a 13-1 season, its second-straight Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff semifinal appearance. The Wolverines were the No. 2 seed and lost to No. 3 TCU in the Fiesta Bowl national semifinal on Dec. 31. These four players have been considering leaving Michigan for the NFL but have not yet made decisions. Corum was in the Heisman Trophy conversation until suffering a left knee injury against Illinois on Nov. 19. He was in for two plays the next week at Ohio State, but could not continue to play on the knee and has since undergone surgery. He averaged 121.9 ya rds a game. This week he earned the prestigious Chicago Tribute Silver Football as the Big Ten's top player as voted by the coaches, and was in Heisman Trophy contention when he suffered the injury just before halftime against Illinois, the 11th game of the regular season. He is a major reason Michigan is 13-0 and the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines will face No. 3 TCU (12-1) on Dec. 31 in the Fiesta Bowl, while defending national champion Georgia plays No. 4 Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. The winner advances to the national title game.After he signed his last football of the camp, Corum stood up and leaned on his crutches. He got the question again about what his future holds. "I don't know," Corum told The Detroit New s. "I don't know what I'm going to do yet. I'm still thinking about it, weighing it, my pros and cons." According to a report from NFL.Com's Ian Rapaport, Michigan junior Blake Corum - the Big Ten Ameche-Dayne Running back of the Year - will undergo knee surgery, and is out for the season. Corum endured the injury late in the first half of Michigan's 19-17 win over Illinois. "Sources: Michigan star RB Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and is out for the season," Rapaport reported. "The Heisman candidate should make a full recovery. He tried to play last week vs. Ohio State but his knee made it impossible." Corum was Michigan's best offensive player, recently being named the Big Ten's Running Back of the Year.Running for 1,463 yards, 18 rushing touchdowns and averaging 5.92 yards per carry. Speaking on Big Ten Network, Corum discussed hi s injury, but did not indicate a surgery was imminent. "You know, I'm just taking it day by day, but you know, we shall see," Corum said. "But with me, without me, I believe in my team. As you could see, they did the job last week. And so, you know, take it day by day. But basically, my team will get the job done. What was supposed to be a two-headed rushing attack for Michigan has, due to injury, become a one-man show. No problem. Blake Corum has done the work of two running backs. The junior was given more responsibility in recent weeks and, well, ran with it. I t culminated in a career performance on Saturday against Maryland in which Corum ran for 243 yards on 30 carries, both personal bests. Blake Corum rushed for a career-high 243 yards and two touchdowns and No. 4 Michigan topped Maryland 34-27 in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday. Corum, who tied the school record with five rushing touchdowns against UConn a week earlier, had a career-high 30 carries. He became the first Michigan back to rush for 200 yards since Karan Higdon in 2017. J.J. McCarthy completed 18 of 26 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten). Blake Corum rushed for a career-high four touchdowns in the first half and added a fifth score in the third quarter to match a school record, helping No. 4 Michigan rout Connecticut 59-0 Saturday. The Wolverines (3-0) led 38-0 at halftime before coasting in the second half of a game that looked a lot like their first two tune-ups, when they beat Colorado State 51-7 and Hawaii 56-10. The Huskies (1-3) had just 64 yards of offense in the first half, had a punt blocked and gave up a punt return for a touch down over the opening 30 minutes. J.J. McCarthy was 15 of 18 for 214 yards, a week after coach Jim Harbaugh said he had won the quarterback competition.Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara entered late in the first half and was r oughed up. He was sacked on the first snap and was hit hard just after completing his only pass attempt. McNamara did not appear to be with his teammates on the sideline in the second half. Without the senior available in the lopsided game, Harbaugh gave several reserve quarterbacks a chance to play. Michigan running back Blake Corum didn't set out to add weight in the offseason, but he's preparing for the upcoming season and an even bigger workload with about 10 extra pounds. Corum, a 5-foot-8 junior, is now 212 pounds, in large part because of eati ng right and hydrating better, not to mention he has always been known for his tireless work in the weight room. He looks bigger and fit, and during a news conference Friday, he said he feels good at this weight. "If anything, I feel faster," Corum said. "It doesn't change my game at all. Maybe bring a little more power, a little more weight with it." Last season, he was part of the backfield duo with the hard-running Hassan Haskins, whose 20 rushing touchdowns set a program single-season record. They c alled themselves, "Thunder and Lightning," with Corum the latter because of his breakaway speed.Corum was on pace for a 1,000-yard season, but a high-ankle sprain late in the schedule forced him to miss the better part of three regular-season game s. In 12 games, he had 143 carries for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 24 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Corum was voted third-team All-Big Ten by the coaches. In the wild, wild west that is Name, Image and Likeness in college athletics, Jim Harbaugh upped the ante on Tuesday. During his 50-minute interview session with reporters at Big Ten Media Days, the Michigan head coach offered his endorsement of league-p rovided revenue sharing to players. "You know me, I've always been for NIL," Harbaugh said on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I believe players should have a share in the revenues, and I think that's something that's really possible at Michigan. I think that's where we're headed." Asked to clarify his comments, Harbaugh pointed to the Big Ten - currently in negotiation for another multimedia rights deal, reportedly expected to top $1 billion - as having the financial resources to fund such a plan."They use their name, image and likeness on the TV broadcasts," Harbaugh said. "They're the ones signing the mega-TV deals. And a new one's coming in 2024. Why can't that be an NIL deal right from the Big Ten? "Because that's who's negotiating the TV d eals, and that's where the big money is." Blake Corum rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns as No. 25 Michigan routed Northern Illinois, 63-10 on Saturday. The Wolverines (3-0) scored touchdowns on their first nine drives, eight of them on the ground. The 10th drive also included a touchdown run, but it was called back for a holding penalty and Michigan turned the ball over on downs. The Wolverines never punted. Word spready quickly to Michigan sophomore running back Blake Corum about the comments his position coach, Mike Hart, said about him Thursday. Hart is Michigan's all-time leader rusher, totaling 5,040 career yards from 2004-07. With the elusiveness to si destep defenders and the doggedness to pick up extra yards after contact, Hart is one of the most distinguished college running backs of all time, despite his 5-foot-9 stature.While the 35-year-old's playing career has been over for more than a de cade, he said Thursday he sees a lot of himself in Corum, a strong, speedy back who also is considered undersized at his position at 5-foot-8. "He works a lot harder," Hart said. "Blake's a lot faster than me, a lot quicker than me. If I was that fast, I 'd probably still be playing in the NFL. He's a great kid, but I think his mentality and the way he does things, the way he approaches the game is really similar to the way I did. He doesn't like making mistakes; he's not happy when he makes mistakes. He wants to be perfect, and that's something that reminds me of myself from that standpoint." If you're counting on Donovan Edwards to make a huge splash running the football this fall, you might want to temper your expectations a bit. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh dialed back any pressure put on the four-star running back from West Bloomfield this week, telling the "In the Trenches" podcast that the plan in 2021 is to give a majority of the carries to two, more experienced players in the backfield. "Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins are two tremendous players," Harbaugh told host Jon Jansen. "T hat's where a bulk of the carries are going to go. We're going to lean heavily on those two players."While the statement is not so much a revelation, it is a philosophical change from a year ago - when the Wolverines, with a more experienced and d eep group of running backs, made a more concerted effort to spread the football around. In six games, four running backs had at least 15 carries - while quarterback Joe Milton was second with 38. Two of the team's three leading rushers, Milton and Zach C harbonnet, have since departed while veteran Chris Evans (16 carries, 73 yards) declared for the NFL Draft. Michigan sophomore running back Blake Corum has drawn comparisons to Mike Hart, the program's all-time leading rusher, and not just because the two resemble each other in terms of stature. Corum is 5-foot-8, 200 pounds and Hart, who played for Michigan 2 004-2007, was listed his senior season at 5-9, 202. Hart was hired earlier this year from Indiana to coach the Wolverines' running backs and while Corum is not a mirror image - he's faster than Hart - there are some obvious similarities. While Hart was w ith the Hoosiers, he recruited Corum, a four-star Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year, out of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. So the two got to know each other. Corum said before he arrived at Michigan as an early enrollee freshman in 2020, he would w atch film of Hart when he played for the Wolverines. "Just looking at old running backs," Corum said. Hart, 34, was named the program's new running backs coach on Wednesday, leaving his post as associa te head coach and running backs coach at Indiana, in an announcement from head coach Jim Harbaugh.
