Alabama football coach Nick Saban released a statement Wednesday, addressing a video of wide receiver Jermaine Burton's exit from the field against Tennessee in which a fan said Burton smacked her. "We are aware of the situation with Jermaine Burton as he was exiting the field Saturday," Saban's statement read. "We are currently working to gather more information." A video filmed from the Neyland Stadium crowd Saturday was posted to TikTok on Tuesday, showing Tennessee fans storming the field and Burton is seen walking back toward the locker room through Vols fans who were celebrating a 52-49 over Alabama football. Emily Isaacs, who posted the video to her TikTok account, wrote in the caption "Jermaine Burton smacking me in the head while walking past him after their loss Saturday." The woman in the video crosses in front of Burton.

Shortly after, Burton appears to raise his right arm and make contact with her. She stops her run onto the field, grabs the right side of her head and she turns around to look back at Burton who continues toward the locker room. Representatives from the Knoxville and University of Tennessee police departments told The Tuscaloosa News that the incident has not been reported as of Wednesday afternoon. Burton transferred to the Crimson Tide this offseason after winning a national championship with Georgia over Alabama in January. The junior became an immediate starter, filling one starting receiver spot in each of the first six games. Burton didn't start against Tennessee but he had his second-highest snap total of the season with 51. - Montgomery Advertiser

If Bryce Young is going to win the Heisman Trophy again this season, he will have to do so with an almost entirely new cast of characters. He doesn't have receivers Jameson Williams, John Metchie III or Slade Bolden to catch passes anymore. They all went off to the NFL. That's 217 combined receptions lost. Now, a week into preseason practices, Young is having to build rapport with new receivers who have a chance to be some of his top weapons. Alabama went out and added some of the best available in the transfer portal in Georgia's Jermaine Burton and Louisville's Tyler Harrell. Young praised both Tuesday, speaking to reporters for the first time in August.

Young was aware of Burton from their time in California, but Young also knew him from Burton's time with the Bulldogs. "On film, how explosive he was is what really popped," Young said. Nick Saban said Burton has been the most consistent among Alabama's receivers so far. Young said Burton always gives everything in practice, finishing routes and plays. He also has noticed Burton's selflessness in that he is willing to run any route and play any role. "He's someone who comes to work every day with a great attitude," Young said. "Before every walk through, he's coming up to me like, 'Let's get it. Let's have a great practice. Let's get better." - Tuscaloosa News

The Crimson Tide last year, after all, welcomed a rival in Henry To'o To'o, previously of Tennessee, and Jameson Williams, fresh off a meeting playing for Ohio State in a national title game loss to Alabama. But the two-part Alabama-Georgia postseason series from last season was especially emotional and Burton made the move so soon after the 33-18 Bulldog win. Did anyone in the Crimson Tide locker room look at Burton sideways upon arrival? "We didn't have much reaction," Alabama safety Jordan Battle said Tuesday at SEC media days. "I mean, I'm pretty sure Georgia fans, Georgia people and the media out there have a reaction, but we welcomed him with open arms. He's doing great right now and I think he's going to be a big factor on the field. He's allowing us to compete in 7-on-7 every day. As a DB in the secondary, we love that addition."

And what about that Georgia national title ring? Has it been spotted in the Alabama complex? "I don't think so and probably think he never will around Alabama, of course," Battle said. "But I love Jermaine, of course. He's a great guy. I think he's a great addition to the team. Very explosive down the field. And I love competing against him in practice as well." Burton had two catches for 28 yards against Alabama in the national championship game after having a three-catch, 36-yard night in the SEC title game loss to the Tide. - Birmingham News

The SEC is considering a change to its transfer rules this week at its annual spring meetings in Destin, Florida that would allow players greater freedom to move to another school within the conference. The change, which was proposed by the University of Alabama, would push the SEC's intra-conference transfer deadline for fall sports athletes back from February 1 to May 1. That would align it with the NCAA's deadline to enter the transfer portal and still maintain eligibility to play the upcoming season.

However, there might not be enough support for the proposal to be adopted. "I would guess that's going to stay where it is. I think you open up a long time that your players can go," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday. "Someone kind of joked, they're not going to put their spring game on TV, because you're saying, "Hey, here's our best players. Come get them." I think that is probably something that will stay, in my opinion. Doesn't mean that was everyone's opinion. But that's really difficult." South Carolina coach Shane Beamer thought the transfer rule worked out well last year but was willing to listen to both sides of the argument, including the belief that SEC players should be kept within the conference as much as possible. Georgia's Kirby Smart also favored the existing rule. - Birmingham News

Alabama no doubt saw a jump in receiver production from what it lost in the portal, but it has more ground to make up from what was lost to the NFL Draft. Portal departures put together 28 catches for 429 yards and four touchdowns. Compare that to 80 receptions for 1,490 yards and 13 touchdowns for portal additions. The two aren't close. But those combined portal additions are behind Jameson Williams' sole production in yards and touchdowns in 2021. He caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. Plus, Alabama lost John Metchie III, who led the team with 96 receptions, to the draft. Williams set the bar high, but he also proved a jump can be made in the right circumstance. Williams went from next-to-no production at Ohio State to an All-American season at Alabama. That might be a lot to ask of Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton or Louisville transfer Tyler Harrell to pull off alone, but combined they could make up for that lack of production. Especially when they have a Heisman Trophy winner throwing to them. "Jermaine Burton has probably been the most consistent guy at the position," Saban said after the spring game. "So it's obviously a place where we need to get more consistent, there's no question about it, in my opinion. If we're gonna be able to take advantage of the other strengths that we have on our team." - Birmingham News

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Two of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young's biggest weapons could be transfers from the Peach State. Versatile tailback/kick returner Jahmyr Gibbs ranked third nationally in all-purpose yards for Georgia Tech last season. Jermaine Burton was one of Georgia's top receivers and could replace Jameson Williams as Young's primary go-to guy in a talented but largely unproven group. - AP College Football

UGA football wide receiver Jermaine Burton was carted off the practice field Tuesday after being injured, according to a source. The sophomore starter sustained a hyperextended knee and will miss the rest of spring practice, according to Dawgs247. He could be sidelined for about four weeks. Georgia did not respond to a request for comment. The Bulldogs already suffered a major injury at the position when star wideout George Pickens tore an ACL in practice a week earlier that could sideline him for much, if not all, of the 2021 season. - Athens Daily Banner

One of the biggest takeaways for Georgia's offense is Burton. He's beginning to realize the potential and expectations he had as a former five-star prospect out of Calabasas, California. Burton came to Georgia as one of its prized last additions on National Signing Day in February. They saw Burton as a weapon, and saw his "lightning-fast speed," as tight end John FitzPatrick put it, almost immediately. Pickens likens Burton to himself as a freshman with approach and ability. Burton logged a lot of snaps for the Bulldogs early on. Bennett even favored the freshman, too, but the consistent connections weren't happening. Burton dropped a pass at Alabama, fell victim to some overthrows and underthrows and hadn't emerged as a viable threat yet.

Smart emphasized that the freshman was getting "better and better" behind closed doors. Last Saturday, with Daniels calling the shots, Burton found his niche. It became his show. A two-headed monster might've been formed with Burton and Pickens. "The things the public sees are awesome, so I want him to be the complete player he can be," Smart said. "I want him to help benefit our team in terms of second-level run game, getting runs started. The thing about Jermaine is, he cares. That's important to him. He wants to do those things right, and on top of that, he's got good ability." - Macon Telegraph
