Texas Tech senior running back Tahj Brooks revealed Monday that he plans to use his final season of eligibility and return to play again with the Red Raiders in 2024. Brooks, a first-team AP All-Big 12 pick, is fourth nationally and second in the Big 12 with 1,443 yards rushing (120.3 yards per game). He ran for at least 100 yards in eight of the last 10 games, and in the two games he didn't had 98 and 95 yards. Brooks announced his decision to return in a social media post. He has 2,957 yards rushing a nd 27 touchdowns over 44 games in his career at Texas Tech, which began as a freshman during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season that didn't count against the eligibility of any players. - AP College Football

Behren Morton threw two touchdown passes, Tahj Brooks ran for two scores and Texas Tech used a fast start to beat West Virginia 48-10 on Saturday. Coming off a bye week and playing in Lubbock for the first time in nearly a month, the Red Raiders (4-3, 2- 2 Big 12) scored 17 points off of turnovers, broke a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-0 at home. Texas Tech seized control with touchdowns on its first two drives and the Red Raiders' fast-tempo offense kept West Virginia off balance. Texas Tech surpassed 100 offensive plays, including 55 in the first half when it converted six of seven times on fourth down. Brooks had 17 carries for a season-high 107 yards, including first-quarter TD runs of 1 and 19 yards. Morton, a redshirt freshman, was soli d again in his second straight start. He completed 28 of 45 passes for 325 yards after throwing for 379 two weeks ago in a loss at No. 11 Oklahoma State.After Texas Tech's Malik Dunlap intercepted an underthrown ball on West Virginia's first drive of the third quarter, the Red Raiders' Xavier White caught a pass from Morton and weaved 37 yards through traffic for a 55-yard touchdown. White later had a 27-yard catch along the sideline to set up Morton's 12-yard scoring toss to Loic Fouonji for a 3 1-3 lead. White had eight catches for a career-high 139 yards. Texas Tech entered the game with one of the worst turnover margins in the Bowl Subdivision. The Red Raiders intercepted three passes and recovered a CJ Donaldson fumble near midfield. After t he fumble recovery, SaRodorick Thompson scored on a 13-yard run for a 38-10 lead to start the fourth. Texas Tech kicked a short field goal after JT Daniels' career-high third interception. Daniels finished 23 of 36 for 194 yards for the Mountaineers (3-4 , 1-3). Donovan Smith came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes, Tahj Brooks ran for three scores and Texas Tech blew out lower-division Murray State 63-10 in coach Joey McGuire's debut Saturday night. Smith had scoring tosses on his first two passes aft er replacing Tyler Shough in the first half. McGuire indicated he planned to play both, but said at halftime Shough was injured and probably wouldn't return. Shough was on the sideline in the second half with a sling on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. "We always preach stay ready so you don't got to get ready," said Smith, who was 14-of-16 passing for 221 yards without an interception. "Every time we're in the film room, every time we're practicing, we always take reps in the back." Brooks finished wi th 50 yards and scoring runs of 14, 3 and 23 yards, the last giving the Red Raiders a 42-10 lead late in the first half on the way to their 23rd consecutive victory in a home opener.Texas Tech's first meeting with Murray State and 20th consecutive victory over an FCS opponent was similar to the lower-division matchups from 2010-19, when the average margin of victory was 40 points. Tahj Brooks ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 67-yarder for the lead, and Texas Tech held on to beat lower-division Stephen F. Austin 28-22 on Saturday night. The Red Raiders (2-0) made a stand in the final two minutes, forcing a t urnover on downs after the FCS Lumberjacks had a first down inside the Texas Tech 10-yard line. Trae Self's fourth-down pass into the end zone was incomplete. Texas Tech defensive tackle Jaylon Hutchings came up huge with a tackle for loss and a sack on consecutive plays before a QB pressure of Self on the final play for SFA (1-1).After Brooks' long scoring run, Xavier White broke free for 52 yards on a 97-yard drive that ended with a short TD run. "It wasn't clean on offense, and I'll take the b lame on that," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said. "In a game where we didn't play real crisp on offense, we fought at the end. We popped a couple of runs in the third quarter where we fit it up well." Leading 21-13, Texas Tech went for it on fourth down o n the final play of the third quarter, and Tyler Shough fumbled on a sack. The ball ended up 39 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and SFA scored but couldn't convert the 2-point try, settling for a 21-19 deficit. Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks (28) will be trying to expand his role after he rushed for 255 yards last season as a true freshman. For most of the 2020 football season, Texas Tech's running game was a group effort, even if SaRodorick Thompson was t he leader of the pack. Down the stretch against West Virginia, though, position coach DeAndre Smith's list of available scholarship running backs dwindled to one: Tahj Brooks. During a true freshman season in which Brooks rushed for 255 yards and four to uchdowns, no moment was more pressure-packed than when Brooks had to go in against WVU - and not come out. From the last minute of the third quarter through the end of the game, Brooks carried 11 times, helping Tech grind out a 34-27 homecoming victory. "Coach (Smith) put me in and he was like, 'You know what to do. I coached you hard enough to go ball,' " Brooks recounted Thursday. "He put me in those situations, and I came out successful. "What we go through every day in practice, it's nothing differe nt. It just transferred to the game.
