Despite sharing his intentions to transfer from Kansas last week, wide receiver Lawrence Arnold has decided to remain at the university and on the football team following conversations with coach Lance Leipold. Arnold, who will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, was among 11 players who at least publicly expressed an interest in transferring once spring practices concluded on April 9.

He started nine games last season and played an integral role in the passing game, and he figured to be one of the Jayhawks' top targets again this season. "I just think he finally had a chance to sit down with Coach and talk to Coach," Claude Mathis, who was Arnold's coach at DeSoto High in Texas when he was a senior, said Monday. "They're on the same page now. I think it had a lot to do with his role and with the offense, and now that they had a chance to sit down and talk now, I think they've kind of worked some things out." - Lawrence Journal World

Wide receiver Lawrence Arnold, who was expected to be one of the Kansas football team's top targets next season, wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday evening that he intends to transfer. Arnold, who will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, started nine games last season. He tied for second on the team with 27 catches, matched a team high with three touchdown receptions and was fourth with 316 receiving yards. Eleven players have decided to leave the Jayhawks since Thursday, though he's the only one who was expected to play a significant role. Wide receiver Majik Rector also wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that he was transferring, as did cornerback DeVonte Wilson, who noted shortly thereafter that he had committed to Florida A&M.; Arnold had a season-high eight catches for 68 yards in the 53-32 loss at Duke on Sept. 25 and had a season-high 73 yards on four catches in the 35-23 loss to Oklahoma on Oct. 23. A three-star recruit out of Desoto, Texas, Arnold had scholarship offers from Kansas State, Cal and Northwestern, among others. - Topeka Capital Journal

Wins have been so rare at Kansas over the last decade-plus that it wasn't too surprising when students spilled from the stands and rushed the field to celebrate Lance Leipold's first victory as head coach of the Jayhawks. Who cares if it came against lower-level South Dakota? It wasn't easy, either. Jason Bean connected with Lawrence Arnold for their second touchdown of the game, giving the Jayhawks the lead back with 1:12 remaining Friday night, and their rebuilt defense held the Coyotes on downs to preserve a nervy 17-14 victory that brought an end to a 13-game skid dating to Oct. 26, 2019. "Right now we're not going to get concerned about style points and things like that. We needed to get a win," Leipold said. "Getting a victory was first and foremost right now and as I said, then we go to the film and work to get better." The Coyotes, who trailed 10-0 late in the third quarter, had pulled ahead when Kansas native Travis Theis ran 25 yards for a score with 5:16 to go. But the Jayhawks answered by driving 64 yards in less than four minutes, converting fourth-and-10 along the way and getting some help from a targeting penalty on South Dakota freshman Myles Harden. Then the touchdown pass to Arnold that set off the wild celebration. - Kansas/AP College Football

Another key member of the receiving group figures to be Lawrence Arnold, whose debut season at KU got derailed due to injury. Now a redshirt freshman, Arnold played in the first four games of 2020, even making one start. The 6-3, 185-pound wideout from DeSoto, Texas, totaled six catches for 45 yards before a shoulder injury forced him to miss the rest of the season. Although Arnold's participation during spring practices, Lassiter shared, was somewhat limited as he continued to recover from the injury setback, the veteran noticed his younger teammate improving. "He wants to just keep leveling up, just like the rest of us," Lassiter said. "Everybody's got something they need to work on, including myself." Now that Lassiter has been around Arnold for a year and seen his talents and approach, the super-senior views Arnold as capable of making a jump in his second year with the team. "He's real confident in his game, as he should be," Lassiter said. "I feel like he's the type of player that won't let anybody get in his head, won't let anybody tell him that he can't do something." - Lawrence Journal World

It didn't take long for University of Kansas quarterbacks to discover an important trait in one of the offense's youngest receivers. After all, this particular talent possessed by freshman Lawrence Arnold helps the QBs look good, too. Senior Thomas MacVittie said Arnold began proving his worth as a target early on during preseason practices. "His catch radius," MacVittie said of Arnold, "you can throw it anywhere near him and he's getting it, if it's high, if it's low."

A 6-foot-3, 185-pound wideout from DeSoto, Texas, Arnold (some of his teammates call him LJ) arrived at KU as one of the most highly regarded prospects in the 2020 recruiting class. The long receiver with the hops that allow him to play even taller actually began to make his mark earlier this summer, when KU players worked out on their own. Junior KU quarterback Miles Kendrick said he quickly took note of Arnold based on what the QB saw in training, even before camp began on July 31. "We've seen it since he stepped on campus," Kendrick asserted. "The guy's just smooth, aggressive, doesn't really bat an eye. He just wants to work. He's a dog." - Lawrence Journal World
