UGA football could be without two expected key contributors for its top five season opening matchup against Clemson on Sept. 4. Georgia confirmed Wednesday that tight end Darnell Washington and nickel back Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries, but didn't detail how long they may be out. They are expected to be sidelined for at least three to four weeks, according to 247Sports national reporter Josh Pate. Georgia's practices have been closed to the media all preseason, but a source confirmed the players s ustained foot injuries Tuesday and were to undergo X-rays. "Darnell Washington and Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries during practice this week," coach Kirby Smart said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon. "They are both undergoing treatment and have an excellent prognosis. Their status is day to day." - Athens Banner-Herald

A real estate company claims Tykee Smith, the All-American former WVU football player who transferred to Georgia, owes it almost $8,000. Dark Knight LLC, which owns Chateau Royale, sued Smith in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on June 3. According to the civil complaint, Smith "owes rent, late fees, yearly garbage." It seeks $7,941 plus court costs. An attempt to serve Smith on June 11 was unsuccessful. The civil complaint gives Smith's address as an apartment on Valley View Avenue. On July 20, it was ordered a legal notice would be published. That notice ran in The Dominion Post on July 23. It states Smith has until Aug. 8 to submit a response to Magistrate Sandy Holepit or default judgment will be taken against him. Smith started the last tw o seasons for the Mountaineers at spur safety. He started nine games in 2020, finishing with 61 tackles and eight for loss, along with two interceptions, earning All-America honors. - Dominion Post

Georgia took the field for its G-Day spring game missing a player who will feature prominently this fall. West Virginia defensive back transfer Tykee Smith is not in Athens yet and did not suit up in the game. He put up strong numbers for the Mountaineer s last season, recording 61 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass break-ups. Smith has the versatility to play anywhere in the defensive secondary. He can play outside corner, in the slot or slide in at safety. He seems t o be a strong candidate to battle for the hybrid STAR position in Georgia's defense. In the spring game, as well as last season's Peach Bowl, that role belonged to senior Latavious Brini. Wherever he slides in on defense, Smith figures to be a key contri butor to the Georgia secondary. In addition to being a talented player, he brings game experience the Bulldogs lack in the defensive backfield. Once he arrives in Athens, it will be up to head coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to de termine how best to utilize his talents. - Macon Telegraph

In boilerplate language that is becoming all too familiar for those that follow college athletics, West Virginia sophomore spear Tykee Smith has announced he is entering the transfer portal. Smith recorded 61 tackles, including eight for losses, in his s ophomore season of 2020 at West Virginia. That came after a true freshman season in which he had 53 stops, including 2.5 behind the line. He had two interceptions in each of his two seasons, and also totaled 13 pass deflections over that time. A native o f Philadelphia, Smith was viewed by some as a potential transfer candidate when defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae left for the same position at Georgia in late January. However, as February went by and spring practice began today at West Virginia, that possibility appeared to have lessened, making today's announcement a bit surprising. - Charleston Gazette-Mail
