 Tayvion Robinson, Kentucky, Player News

  02/26/23 - WR Tayvion RobinsonrSr/2024, Kentucky, 5-11, 191 (DS#44 WR) + More +

The former Virginia Tech transfer started his UK career on a high note with six catches for 136 yards in the season opener, but injuries and the offense's struggles combined to contribute to an overall disappointing season. Robinson should start at slot receiver in 2023, but he might be Leary's third option behind Barion Brown and Dane Key. But with Coen back at offensive coordinator, Robinson will have the chance to fill the featured role Coen pitched when he was recruited to Lexington. - Herald Leader

Little about Tayvion Robinson's debut season for Kentucky football went according to plan. But one year after transferring from Virginia Tech to Lexington, Robinson has elected to return to Kentucky to use the extra season of eligibility granted all players in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Robinson signed with the Wildcats he was viewed as a like-for-like replacement for former star receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, who broke the school records for catches and receiving yards in a single season in 2021 before being drafted by the New York Giants.

Tayvion Robinson looked the part of quarterback Will Levis' new go-to receiver when he tallied six catches for 136 yards in his Kentucky debut, but he would top the 100-yard plateau just one more time in 12 games. Against SEC teams, Robinson caught just 15 passes for 121 total yards. Meanwhile, freshmen Barion Brown and Dane Key emerged as the top wide receiver options. Robinson finished the year ranked second on the team in catches (40) and third in receiving yards (497) and receiving touchdowns (three). He also arrived on campus with the reputation as an elite punt returner but was unable to make much impact in that area amid season-long struggles from UK's special teams units. - Herald Leader

A season ago, Wan'Dale Robinson transferred home to Kentucky from Nebraska and proceeded to produce the single-greatest season ever (104 catches for 1,334 yards and seven TDs) for a Wildcats wideout. With the ex-Western Hills High School star now set to make plays for the New York Giants, UK is counting on a different Robinson to emerge as its "WR1." In three seasons at Virginia Tech, Tayvion Robinson caught a combined 113 passes for 1,555 yards and nine touchdowns. No one should expect Tayvion to match Wan'Dale but Kentucky does need its "new Robinson" to lead a youthful receiving corps. - Herald Leader

Given the depth of talent at receiver in the SEC, it is unlikely Tayvion Robinson earns preseason all-league honors at his primary position, but he should garner support as a returner. Robinson averaged 13.1 yards per punt return with one touchdown on 25 returns for Virginia Tech last season. His average would have ranked second in the SEC, where only four players returned a punt for a touchdown last season. And if Robinson takes over the featured role in Kentucky's passing game vacated by Wan'Dale Robinson? He could be in discussion for postseason honors at wide receiver. - Courier Journal

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Wide receiver Tayvion Robinson, a Virginia Tech transfer, is among several looking to fill the huge void left by the departure of receiving leader Wan'Dale Robinson to the NFL draft after a 104-catch, 1,334-yard season. Tayvion Robinson totaled 1,555 yards and 113 receptions in 36 games with the Hokies. - AP College Football

It didn't take long for the Kentucky football program to acquire a new wide receiver from the transfer portal following the decommitment of another. Tayvion Robinson, a former four-star recruit who started 29 games at Virginia Tech over the last three seasons, committed to UK on Wednesday following an official visit over the weekend. Robinson will have up to two years of eligibility with the Wildcats due to the NCAA's COVID-19 waiver. Robinson entered the transfer portal on Dec. 2. In his three seasons, he accumulated 1,555 yards and nine touchdowns for the Hokies, who finished 6-6 in the 2021 season and were invited to the Pinstripe Bowl. He's one of several Virginia Tech players who has opted out of the bowl game or entered the transfer portal. - Herald Leader

Kentucky football appears to have found its new transfer wide receiver. Former Virginia Tech wide receiver Tayvion Robinson tweeted Saturday afternoon he had committed to the Wildcats. Robinson quickly deleted the tweet, but a source confirmed he is still expected to sign with Kentucky on Wednesday. The 5-foot-10, 187-pound receiver could serve as a like-for-like replacement for Kentucky wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson if UK's record holder for catches in a season declares for the NFL draft as expected. Tayvion Robinson led Virginia Tech with 44 catches and five receiving touchdowns this season. He ranked second on the team with 559 receiving yards in the regular season before announcing earlier this month he was entering the transfer portal. - Courier Journal

Virginia Tech receiver Tayvion Robinson showed plenty of promise last season as a true freshman playing in the slot. He kicked off his sophomore year moving over a few steps to outside receiver in Saturday night's win over North Carolina State, but his talent was still clearly on display. He caught four passes for 40 yards with a touchdown. "They trusted me this year (on the outside), so just learning as I go," Robinson said in a virtual news conference with reporters on Tuesday. Robinson spent most of the team's truncated offseason working at the position. He said he had to "buckle down" in fall camp and learn how to handle press coverage, something he didn't see last year playing in the slot.

"It's completely different from slot because 99% of times you're getting press coverage compared to in the slot, you're getting the off, nickel," Robinson said. He beat press coverage on the touchdown he scored. Robinson lined up against N.C. State cornerback Malik Dunlap and to get in position to make the play had to fight his way free in the end zone to make the catch. "I was practicing all week on hand-to-hand combat, and specifically on that play I got the coverage I wanted," Robinson said. "Learning how to use my hands, fight with bigger DBs because I'm a shorter receiver. I'm learning, and Quincy threw a great ball, and I just made a play on it." - Roanoke Times

2020 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Tayvion Robinson, Virginia Tech,...Robinson (5-10, 186), was the Hokies' third-leading receiver in 2019, making 31 receptions totaling 404 yards and a TD, which he hauled in during his first career game at Boston College. The Virginia Beach, Virginia native ran the ball 11 times for 132 on the season and had a long rush of 49 yards at Georgia Tech. He returned three kicks on the season, but made a noticeable impact in the punt return game, where Robinson returned 13 for an average of 14.2 yards in the latter portion of the season. He scampered for a 35-yard return against Virginia and also had a return of 33 yards against Wake Forest. - Virginia Tech Football
