Georgia Tech running back Dontae Smith will be back to use his extra season of eligibility. Smith, who set a career high with 420 rushing yards this season, made his announcement Thursday from his Twitter account. He made the proclamation in a manner fit ting for this new age in college sports, writing "1 last ride" while also posting a link to his online merchandise shop. Smith's return provides needed experience for an offense that has lost or stands to lose several key offensive skill players either t o graduation or the transfer portal, including quarterback Jeff Sims, wide receivers Nate McCollum and Malachi Carter and running back Hassan Hall. Depending on what Tech does in procuring running backs out of the transfer portal, Smith is positioned to have a major role in the 2023 season. In four seasons, Smith has run 208 times for 1,159 yards and 12 touchdowns, a 5.0 yards-per-carry average. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Dontae Smith ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns, and Georgia Tech turned to its running game and a takeaway-savvy defense to snap a seven-game losing streak with a 35-17 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) forced four turnovers - interceptions by Derrik Allen, Myles Sims and Charlie Thomas and a fumble recovery by Aliyde Eley - and swarmed the FCS Catamounts (1-1) to hold them to just 118 yards in the second half. Georgia Tech, which finished with 243 yards rush ing and 7.1-yards per game, had lost its last three games by a combined 141-10 score, leaving embattled coach Geoff Collins 9-26 entering the game. But the Jackets scored on consecutive possessions in the first and second quarters and never trailed again. Western Carolina quarterback Carlos Davis, coming off a school record six TD passes and 433 yards passing in a win last week at Charleston Southern, finished with 233 yards on 18 of 27 passing. He constantly escaped with scrambles before getting knocked out of the game late in the third quarter on a hit by Eley. Cole Gonzales took charge of the offense and quickly threw an interception to Thomas. The loss dropped the Catamounts to 0-61 all-time against FBS competition and 0-33 against the Atlant ic Coast Conference. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Georgia Tech running back Dontae Smith was scrolling through Twitter on July 20 when he came upon something he didn't expect to see - his own name. That was the day he was named to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top running back. "I'm on Twitter and I see it, and I'm like, 'Whoa," Smith said. If you're a returning starter at running back at a power-conference school, it's perhaps not a big deal. There are 75 running backs on the list (although somehow former Tech All-American Jahmyr Gibbs, now at Alabama, was omitted). But for Smith, who last season was a third-string running back behind Gibbs and Jordan Mason, it was a big deal to be recognized. "I'm extremely thankful," Smith said. "And I'm going to go out there and chase it and try to win that award. It is a motivation."Smith, who ran for 378 yards last season and averaged a team-high 5.6 yards per carry, was bursting forth with optimism and confidence about the season ahead for him and his team, even as expectations for the Yellow Jackets are low in the wake of three consecutive three-win seasons. Smith poured out his belief at the ACC Kickoff in Charlotte two weeks ago. "We are going to win," Smith said. "Now, the realistic goal is, what bowl game? We want to make a bowl game, so we're going to have to win more games than we have been." - Atlanta Journal Constitution
