  Quarterback John Matocha, who has led Colorado School of Mines to the Division II championship game, leads The Associated Press D-II All-America team released Wednesday. Matocha has passed for 4,558 yards and 50 touchdowns with only six interceptions for the Orediggers (13-2), who face Ferris State (13-1) in the title game Saturday. Matocha is one of nine finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which goes to the best player in Division II and will be handed out Friday. Ferris State defensive end Caleb Murphy, the only Harlon Hill finalist on defense, was selected to the first team. Shepherd had three players selected to the first team, including running back Ronnie Brown, offensive lineman Joey Fisher and tight end Brian Walker. Shepherd quarterback Tyson Bagent, last year's Harlon Hill winner, was selected to the second team. - AP College Football

  2022 RMAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: John Matocha, Colorado School of Mines,...After closing out a prolific regular season for the No. 7/10 Orediggers, Matocha is the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year ahead of the 2022 NCAA Division II postseason. The senior quarterback ranks among the nation's best in multiple categories but stands No. 1 overall with a 188.4 passing-efficiency rating. Throughout 11 regular-season appearances for Mines, the Magnolia, Texas, native has dished out 33 touchdown passes and completed 71.5 percent of his passing attempts (238-of-333) for an average of 310.5 passing yards per game. He has compiled 3,415 passing yards on the year in addition to 214 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown this season. Matocha orchestrates a potent Mines offense that ranks first in the nation for total offense (509.1) and red zone offense (.939). In addition to being named the league's Offensive Player of the Year, Matocha was also named a first-team all-conference selection. - RMAC Football

Against the RMAC's #2-rated defense at 15.3 ppg in Fort Lewis, John Matocha accounted for 418 total yards and 6 touchdowns in Mines' 42-0 rout of the Skyhawks. Matocha completed the rare hat trick – 4 passing, 1 rushing, and 1 receiving touchdown – as he caught the game's opening score on a halfback option and never looked back.   OCT 14 RMAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: John Matocha of Colorado School of Mines has been named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. He produced all four of Mines' touchdowns as they beat Western Colorado 28-0 to improve to 6-0. The freshman quarterback completed his first 14 passes on the way to a 32-of-40 (80%) performance throwing for 263 yards and two touchdowns; he also ran for two more scores on 52 yards rushing. Matocha's touchdown passes were strikes of 33 and 36 yards. Matocha outgained Western Colorado by himself, producing 315 total yards to the Mountaineers' 213. - Rocky Mountain Football

  SEPT 23 RMAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: In only his second career start, freshman John Matocha of Colorado Mines earned his second-straight RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honor. He helped No. 17 defeat No. 9 CSU-Pueblo on the road, 24-14, with four total touchdowns to his credit. Matocha passed for 201 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 97 yards and a score.   SEPT 16 RMAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Making his debut at quarterback as a true freshman, John Matocha of Colorado Mines had an incredibly efficient 20-for-22, 249-yard, 4-touchdown performance in Mines' 52-7 win over Black Hills State. Matocha had only one incompletion in each half as he threw for three touchdowns (25, 4, and 36 yards) and ran for a four-yard score of his own.
