Sunday was a big news day for Penn State football. While Nittany Lions redshirt senior offensive lineman Bryce Effner announced that he will "step away" from football, Redshirt junior defensive end Adisa Isaac announced he'll return to the program for th e 2023 season. Isaac played 13 games in 2022, making 28 total tackles (15 solo), 11 tackles for loss and four sacks. The redshirt junior earned All-Big Ten third team honors from the coaches and an honorable mention by the media. He's played in 27 games for Penn State, making 55 total tackles (24 solo), 15.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and caused a forced fumble. - Centre Times

Penn State is known for its gritty defensive line play and ability to reach the quarterback on passing plays. But with the grittiness comes injuries. Two key factors to Penn State's defensive line - defensive end Adisa Isaac and defensive lineman PJ Must ipher - both fell to season-ending injuries in 2021. Isaac, a redshirt junior, injured his Achilles prior to Penn State's opener and Mustipher suffered a leg injury in the first drive of the team's 23-20 loss to Iowa on Oct. 9 last year. Isaac, a 6-4, 24 8-pound edge rusher, played in 14 career games for the Nittany Lions - totaling 27 tackles (nine solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. Mustipher played in 36 games, making 107 tackles (49 solo), 10 for loss with three sacks, a fum ble recovery and two forced fumbles.Defensive line coach John Scott Jr. is excited to see what the duo can do, and looks to continue pushing them to be prepared to get back onto the field. "I just think any time you come back from a major injury o ne of the most important things that I can do as a coach is to be there as an encourager," Scott Jr. said during Penn State Media Day on Aug. 6. "Some days, coming back from injuries you can have a rough day or whatnot, but we just have to be there and e ncourage them and be their support." Recovery was tough to navigate for Isaac. The redshirt junior's Achilles tendon was torn and rehab usually takes about a year. While he continued to face new challenges, he wanted to keep an optimistic attitude throug hout the whole season, as he watched his team compete without him. "It was a new journey for me," Isaac said. "I've never been hurt this severe in my life, so it was just something new that I had to take on. Had to keep a positive mindset from the start to the finish, and that's what I'm still doing. I tried not to switch anything up because I feel like it's working. Penn State lost an elite pass rusher when Arnold Ebiketie left for the 2022 NFL Draft, but the team's defensive end group might be able to make up for the loss if redshirt junior Adisa Isaac can rebound from a torn Achilles tendon in 2021, just as fans were waiting to see him team with Ebiketie to collapse the pocket. Isaac was set to be the team's top talent at the position before the injury took him out for the year. Now he should be able to take the spot and prove how good he is in 2022. The redshir t junior is an elite athlete who uses his speed and bend around the edge to get after quarterbacks.He has excellent size at 6-foot-4, 244 pounds and should be able to continue adding strength to improve. Isaac adding power to his game will open up even more of his pass rushing but more importantly will make him more of a threat against the run. His greatest flaw is similar to Ebiketie's last season - he struggles when offensive linemen get downhill against him. - Centre Times

Few players can help themselves this fall more than Adisa Isaac. He's the type of pass rusher NFL teams are willing to overdraft. His size and athleticism are top notch but he hasn't been on the field for over a year after tearing his Achilles last offse ason. Isaac can prove he's worthy of the 2023 NFL Draft if his production can match his tools in his first year as a starter. - Tribune Review

Penn State football will likely be without one of its projected starting defensive ends for the 2021 season. Junior defensive end Adisa Isaac was declared out for "a significant amount of time" by Penn State head coach James Franklin Saturday at the prog ram's media day on Saturday. Franklin said the junior will not be available "likely for the season." Isaac was slated to start for the Nittany Lions after being a rotation player for the first two years he spent on campus. He was expected to step in to h elp replace Shaka Toney and Odafe Oweh, who were both selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. He's recorded three sacks in his career and has the size and athleticism to be an elite defensive end in the Big Ten. Without Isaac, the team will need someone to step up to start across from Arnold Ebiketie along the edge of the defensive line. - Centre Times

Isaac fits a similar profile to the one Odafe Oweh had prior to going No. 31 in the 2021 NFL Draft. While he's not quite the athletic freak Oweh is, he's still an elite athlete for the position. Isaac can beat his opponents with speed and athleticism and uses his long arms to disrupts offensive tackles when they try to get their hands on him. He didn't hit high levels of production in 2020 as a pass rusher but could be in for a breakout season in 2021. Isaac is the player who - while likely not on the r adar now - could put himself firmly on the NFL radar with a high-level season. He doesn't have the safe floor of the previous three players, but Isaac could reasonably break out and find himself in the Day 1 discussion in the 2022 NFL Draft. He's a long way away from that right now - and is also an easy candidate to return for the 2022 season - but his upside is tantalizing and should put him on the NFL radar. - Centre Times
