Parker McKinney threw for 427 yards and five touchdowns, two of them to Cornelius McCoy, and Eastern Kentucky defeated Kennesaw State 45-38 on Saturday. McKinney opened the scoring with an 80-yard TD pass to Jayden Higgins and his 65-yard touchdown pass to Braedon Sloan gave the Colonels (7-4, 3-2 Atlantic Sun) a 45-31 lead in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jonathan Murphy scored on a 3-yard run - one of his three rushing scores in the game - to get Kennesaw State (5-6, 1-4) within seven points. After forcing a punt, the Owls reached the EKU 25-yard line on their final drive but were stopped on downs. Parker McKinney threw three touchdown passes, Joshua Carter rushed for 112 yards and a score and Eastern Kentucky beat Central Arkansas 42-14 on Saturday night to hand the Bears their first conference loss. McKinney gave Eastern Kentucky (6-3, 2-1 Atlant ic Sun Conference) a 7-0 first-quarter lead with a 17-yard scoring toss to Jayden Higgins. Central Arkansas (4-5, 3-1) answered with backup quarterback Clifton McDowell's 15-yard touchdown run to knot the score early in the second quarter.Momentum swung the Colonels' way when John Blunt Jr. picked off a Will McElvain pass and returned it 36 yards to the Central Arkansas 2-yard line. Braedon Sloan ran it in on the next play and then scored on a 4-yard run with 38 seconds left to put EKU up 21-7 at halftime. Parker McKinney completed 35 of 42 passes for 398 yards and and Patrick Nations kicked two fourth-quarter field goals as Eastern Kentucky held off Southeast Missouri State, 28-23 on Saturday. McKinney scored from three yards out as time expired in the th ird quarter, then passed for a two-point conversion to give the Colonels a 22-16 lead. Paxton DeLaurent scored from 13-yards out to get the Redhawks within two, 25-23 with 5:17 left, but McKinney engineered a nine-play, 71-yard drive to set up Nations' 2 1-yard field goal with 1:23 left to set the final margin. Parker McKinney threw for 331 yards and ran for three scores, Braedon Sloan scored the winning touchdown and Eastern Kentucky defeated Southern Utah 35-28 on Saturday night. Although Eastern Kentucky (3-2) never trailed, the game was tied after each Sout hern Utah touchdown and EKU never led by more than seven points. The final tie was at 28-all after Southern Utah's Justin Miller and Isaiah Williams connected for a 19-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. After an EKU punt and a missed field goal by Southern Utah, McKinney drove the Colonels 76 yards in seven plays for the go-ahead touchdown - a 27-yard run by Sloan with 6:13 remaining. After Sloan's touchdown, Southern Utah (3-2) drove to the EKU 22 before turning the ball over on do wns. The Colonels ran out the clock. McKinney was 21 of 26 passing with one touchdown, a 34-yard pass to Sloan. On the ground, McKinney had 11 carries for 65 yards. Sloan had 20 carries for 88 yards rushing. Parker McKinney threw for four touchdowns to tie the Eastern Kentucky career record and the Colonels welcomed back Walt Wells with a 40-17 victory Saturday night over Charleston Southern three weeks after the coach was hospitalized after a "cardiac episo de" in his campus office. Wells returned to coach the Colonels on the sideline after landing in intensive care on Aug. 28 and spending several days in the hospital. He did travel to Ohio last weekend as a sideline observer and watched EKU go seven overti mes to beat Bowling Green 59-57. "It was a great test for my heart," he said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday, and added that he had a couple of broken ribs and a cracked sternum. McKinney tied TJ Pryor (2009-12) as EKU's career TD passing leade r at 51 with his 5-yarder to Jyran Mitchell late in the game.Interceptions by Josh Hayes and Eli Hairston led to 10 points in the third quarter and the Colonels (2-1) added another score after Jayden Higgins had consecutive receptions of 47 and 41 yards, the latter for a TD. Higgins had a career-high 175 yards receiving on seven catches. Jaden Smith scored EKU's first touchdown, returning a punt 56 yards then completing the drive with an 8-yard scoring catch. Parker McKinney threw for 324 yards with three touchdowns and hit Braedon Sloan with the winning two-point conversion as Eastern Kentucky defeated Bowling 59-57 on Saturday in a game that went to seven overtime periods. Bowling Green had the ball first i n the seventh overtime and Matt McDonald threw incomplete, leaving the door open for Eastern Kentucky to finish one of the longer games in NCAA Division I history. Eastern Kentucky scored 24 consecutive points to turn a 17-7 deficit into a 31-17 lead onl y to see the Falcons answer with three consecutive touchdowns of their own for a 38-31 lead.Down seven with 3:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, McKinney led the Colonels 75 yards in 14 plays, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Higg ins on the final play of regulation. EKU chose to kick the extra point to force overtime. Both teams scored touchdowns on their two full possessions in overtime and both missed a two-point try after their second touchdown, sending the game to two-point c onversions tied at 51. Parker McKinney threw four touchdown passes, including two in overtime, as Eastern Kentucky defeated Jacksonville State 39-31 in double overtime on Saturday. Both teams scored touchdowns in the final minute of regulation. Jacksonville State took a 31-24 lead on 10-yard run by Uriah West with 46 seconds remaining. The Colonels (7-4, 4-2 Atlantic Sun-Western Athletic Conference) then drove the field in five plays, the score coming on McKinney's 13-yard pass to Braedon Sloan with two seconds remaining. In the first OT, McKinney tied the score again with a 9-yard pass to Dakota Allen. Jaden Smith caught a 2-yard pass from McKinney in the second OT and the Colonels held Jacksonville State on downs at the 6 to wrap up the win. McKinney completed 29 of 50 pas ses for 290 yards and led the Colonels with 98 yards rushing. He had one rushing touchdown. Zerrick Cooper completed 16 of 30 passes for 251 yards for Jacksonville State (5-6, 3-3). West gained 105 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns. Parker McKinney threw three touchdown passes in the first half and Eastern Kentucky did all of its scoring before intermission to beat Lamar 42-10 on Saturday afternoon. De'Joun Hewitt ran for two first-quarter touchdowns, including a 25-yard dash, and D avion Ross returned an interception 32 yards for a score as the Colonels jumped to a 21-0 lead. After Lamar scored its lone touchdown on Jalen Dummett's seven-yard scramble, McKinney threw back-to-back touchdowns to Dakota Allen and a third to Jayden Hig gins for a 42-7 halftime lead. McKinney was 15 of 20 for 218 yards passing, and the Colonels did not turn the ball over. Hewitt had 101 yards on 20 carries and Allen had four catches for 76 yards. Parker McKinney scored on a 40-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, Joseph Sayles blocked Hayden Ray's attempt at a game-tying field goal and Eastern Kentucky scored 25 unanswered points to stun Central Arkansas 38-35 in the ASUN-WAC Challenge on Saturday. The Colonels (5-1, 2-0) trailed 35-13 after Central Arkansas (2-4, 1-2) used Darius Hale's 6-yard TD run to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive with 8:13 left in the third quarter. Patrick Nations started the EKU run at the 3:11 mark with his third field goal of the game. Kmare Carey set up the next score when he forced and recovered a fumble by Christian Richmond on the ensuing kickoff at the Bears' 15-yard line. Eli Hairston returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown late in the game and Eastern Kentucky stymied Tarleton 20-3 on Saturday. The Colonels (3-2) had been nursing a 13-3 lead until the pick-6 iced the win. Parker McKinney threw for a career-high four touchdowns and Eastern Kentucky beat The Citadel 37-14 on Saturday to give Walt Wells his first victory as a head coach. McKinney was 16-of-26 passing for 274 yards. It's the first time an EKU player threw for four scores since Oct. 8, 2016. All three of Tennessee transfer Jacquez Jones' catches went for touchdowns, the longest a 53-yarder that gave EKU a 30-14 lead in the third quarter. McKinney and Jones combined for two touchdowns in the first quarter and Keyion Dixon made it 20-7 in the second quarter following a Bulldogs fumble when he made a juggling catch of a long pass for a 50-yard score.Emeka Nwanze rushed for 114 yards for The Citadel. Brandon Rainey had a rushing and passing touchdown. Wit h 89 yards rushing, he became the 16th player in program history to go over 2,000 yards on the ground. The game was a rare 2020 FCS matchup with only 17 schools in the division playing this fall. This was The Citadel's only home game in a four-game fall schedule allowed by the Southern Conference, which hopes to play a spring league slate. The Bulldogs (0-3) lost 49-0 at No. 1 Clemson last weekend. Parker McKinney threw for 256 yards and two scores, Alonzo Booth ran for two touchdowns and Eastern Kentucky held off Murray State 34-27 on Saturday. Zaden Webber kicked a 49-yard field goal with 10:14 left in the first quarter to give the Racers their o nly lead of the day. McKinney followed with TD passes of 56 and 14 yards to Alex Cabrera and Jerome Goss respectively. Preston Rice countered with an 18-yard pass to James Sappington to bring Murray State within 14-10. Eastern Kentucky (4-3, 2-1 Ohio Val ley Conference) ended the half with a 38-yard field goal, and that started a run of 20-unanswered points for the Colonels and Murray State (4-4, 2-2) never recovered. After closing to within a touchdown, the Colonels tightened on defense and forced Murra y State to punt, turnover on downs and picked off Rice on the Racers' final possession.
