When John Rhys Plumlee transferred to UCF earlier this year, he made it clear he wanted to continue to play baseball and football like he did at Ole Miss. Although he was able to practice with the baseball team, Plumlee was denied a waiver to play baseba ll last season. Instead, he went through spring football with Gus Malzahn and the Knights football program. After earning the starting quarterback job in the preseason and leading UCF to a spot in the AAC championship, Plumlee recently announced he's ret urning for his final year of eligibility to guide the Knights in their first season in the Big 12 Conference. Before then, however, he's aims to return to the baseball diamond and play this time. "Getting to play baseball, I'm excited about it but definitely pumped up about the upcoming football season as well," he said. A dual-threat quarterback, Plumlee led the Knights with 2,404 passing yards and 841 rushing yards. He scored 25 total touchdowns (14 pass, 11 rush) while completing 63% of his pas ses and averaging 5.8 yards per rush. He battled multiple injuries throughout the season, including with his hamstring down the stretch. Plumlee sat out after halftime in the regular-season finale against USF after running for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. - Orlando Sentinel

John Rhys Plumlee accounted for 308 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 22 UCF took over first place in the American Athletic Conference with a 38-31 victory over No. 16 Tulane on Saturday. Returning from an Oct. 29 concussion against Cincinnati, Plumlee rushed for 176 yards and two TDs. He also passed for 132 yards and a score as UCF (8-2, 5-1) surpassed 400 yards of offense for the eighth time this season. Plumlee's rushing total was his highest with UCF but short of his career high of 212 for Mississ ippi against LSU in 2019. Tulane (8-2, 5-1) pulled within a touchdown with 11:39 left when Michael Pratt hit Reggie Brown in the back of the end zone to cap a drive sustained by Pratt's fourth-and-6 conversion on a pass to Lawrence Keys. But the Knights responded with a 16-play, 75-yard scoring drive that consumed 8:07 and was sustained by a fourth-down pass interference penalty on Tulane's Jarius Monroe on running back Isaiah Bowser's pass intended for Plumlee along the sideline.Bowser finished it off with his second short touchdown run of the game to make it 38-24 with 3:32 left. Tulane drove for one final score on Pratt's 6-yard pass to Shae Wyatt with 1:46 left, but the Green Wave's onside kick was recovered by UCF, which didn't punt the bal l back until the final seconds. Pratt finished 23 of 39 for 236 yards and three TDs. Tulane's Jha-Quan Jackson caught five passes for 95 yards. Plumlee helped UCF to a 10-0 lead when he kept the ball up the middle, cut outside to his right and outraced a ll pursuers for a 67-yard touchdown. Tulane answered with Pratt's 1-yard fade to Duece Watts, set up by Tyjae Spears' 70-yard run. UCF restored its 10-point lead when Bowser took a direct snap on fourth-and-1, faked left and darted right for an easy scor e, his 12th this season. - UCF/AP College Football

UCF coach Gus Malzahn has named John Rhys Plumlee the team's starting quarterback, Malzahn announced on social media Sunday afternoon. Plumlee beat out sophomore Mikey Keene and true freshman Thomas Castellanos to earn the job. "All the way back to sprin g, I've watched every scrimmage - the ones that were live and the other ones that weren't - just trying to put [together] all of the information to make the best decision," Malzahn said Saturday before the announcement. Prior to training camp, the UCF co ach aimed to name a starting quarterback following the second scrimmage but an extra week was needed to make the choice.Malzahn previously said it's one of the most important decisions the coaching staff will make. "That's probably the biggest cha llenge," he said a week ago. "The good thing is we've got two guys we can win with. I don't know how many programs around the country can say that, so we feel really strong about that." Although Plumlee and Keene each offer their own strengths and weakne sses, Malzahn knew a decision had to be made at one point. "We've got to name a starter," Malzahn said Saturday. "That will help our team and help our chemistry." The Ole Miss transfer brought great speed and athleticism with him from the SEC. "Coach Mal zahn is the type of offensive mind that can use a good skillset. My skillset is pretty unique with my running ability," Plumlee said at the team's media day. "He's had success in the past [at Auburn] with Nick Marshall and guys that have similar abilitie s to me." - Orlando Sentinel

Nine months after accepting an invitation to the Big 12 Conference, UCF athletics director Terry Mohajir celebrated the program's final hurdle by announcing the school would be joining the Power Five league in time for the 2023 football season. The move comes after months of back-and-forth negotiations with UCF, which were joined by Cincinnati and Houston, and the American Athletic Conference in order to work out an early exit from the league. "It was good it ended on what we did," Mohajir said Friday a fternoon. "The main thing is to give your fan base, your student-athletes, your coaches, your key stakeholders, your alumni, everybody involved in your program some definitive timetables when you're entering and we did that and I feel really good about i t." The move becomes effective July 1, 2023.Each of the three schools will pay an $18 million buyout over 14 years to the AAC, a source confirmed to the Orlando Sentinel. The Athletic was the first to report the figures. "Sometimes you trade time for money," said Mohajir. "The terms were very fair for both." The money for the buyout will come directly from the individual schools, not from the Big 12 as some speculated. Each of the schools is also on the hook for a $2.5 million entry fee to get in to the league. - Orlando Sentinel

Yes, John Rhys Plumlee thought about it. Of course Plumlee considered the transfer portal. The list of quarterbacks in recent years who lost their starting jobs and stayed put is small. Plumlee could have been the next Jalen Hurts or Jacob Eason or Kelly Bryant and traded in his Ole Miss uniform for one where he could replicate his 1,000-yard rushing season from behind center in 2019.Ultimately, Plumlee thought better of the portal. "To say that it didn't cross my mind, I'd be lying to you," Plum lee said. "But I love Ole Miss. I've started something pretty good here with my friends and family that love Ole Miss. The people here, the atmosphere here at Ole Miss, the baseball aspect of it, a lot went into it. But I feel really blessed to be at Ole Miss. So I'm happy that I stayed." That staying power has transcended the piano-playing, Train-singing quarterback who moonlights as an outfielder in the spring into a wide receiver. Plumlee's transition to receiver began prior to the Outback Bowl last season. He had about a week to learn the position. Raw as he was, he caught five passes for 73 yards, including two crucial hauls on the Rebels' go-ahead fourth quarter drive to help seal the victory. - The Clarion Ledger

It's hard to find a backup quarterback anywhere in college football with better name recognition than John Rhys Plumlee. There's good reason for that. Not many backup quarterbacks ran for 1,000 yards as true freshmen, are key cogs for top-10 baseball pro grams or have their piano-playing past referenced on nearly every game broadcast. And, perhaps most crucially at this point, not many backup quarterbacks led their team to bowl wins by making crucial plays at wide receiver. Plumlee made it clear after th e Outback Bowl that he sees himself as a quarterback. He's started eight games at quarterback and scored 17 touchdowns in two years. But in the 2021 Outback Bowl Plumlee subbed in as a slot receiver and caught five passes for 73 yards. That include d three catches for 55 yards on the Rebels' game-winning touchdown drive with less than five minutes remaining. That performance has led to speculation about whether Ole Miss views Plumlee as a receiver or quarterback. That speculation can't really go an ywhere this spring since Plumlee is playing baseball. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said Plumlee has dropped in for a few quarterback meetings this spring when he's had spare time. - The Clarion Ledger

Week one of SEC football in Oxford was unlike any opening weekend the city has seen before. No Grove tailgating, limited stadium capacity and a week-one top 25 opponent are all new adjustments for the Rebel fandom. The University of Florida Gators ultima tely beat the Ole Miss Rebels 51-35. Throughout the Rebels' first game, there were many expected plays, but there were also a great deal of unexpected decisions. The looming battle for starting quarterback ended before the game began as Matt Corral was n amed the starter on the Jumbotron. This was an outcome that people were relatively prepared for; however, what was not expected was the sparing use of John Rhys Plumlee. Plumlee played as a receiver in the first half, where he was targeted twice and caug ht one ball for a six-yard gain. Other than that, he had 3 yards passing and four rushing attempts. - Daily Mississippian

Former Maryland coach D.J. Durkin, who was fired during the 2018 season following the death of a player who had collapsed during offseason conditioning drills, was hired Thursday as an assistant by Mississippi. Durkin, who spent last season as a consulta nt with the Atlanta Falcons, will join new Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin's defensive staff. Durkin did stints as defensive coordinator at Michigan and Florida, building up a reputation as a top recruiter, before being hired as Maryland head coach at age 37. He went 10-15 in two seasons at Maryland, but his tenure ended abruptly amid scandal. On May 29, 2018, offensive lineman Jordan McNair collapsed during conditioning drills because of heat-related illness. McNair died on June 13. An independent investiga tion determined that athletic trainers on the scene did not follow proper procedures. Durkin was not found responsible for McNair's death, but he was fired in October after having been placed on administrative leave to start the season. - AP College Foot ball

Mississippi fired football coach Matt Luke on Sunday, three days after his third non-winning season ended with an excruciating rivalry game loss. Athletic director Keith Carter said in a statement the decision to change coaches was made after evaluating the trajectory of the program and not seeing see enough "momentum on the field." "While improvements were evident in certain aspects of the program, we are judged ultimately by our record, and, unfortunately, we did not meet the standard of success that we expect from our program," Carter said. Luke, a former Ole Miss offensive lineman and assistant coach, was elevated to interim head coach about two weeks before preseason practice started in 2017 when Mississippi fired Hugh Freeze.Luke guided th e Rebels, who were already banned from the postseason by the NCAA, to a 6-6 record that helped him land a four-year deal through 2021. With the program facing another bowl ban in 2018 and other NCAA sanctions, Luke and the Rebels went 5-7. Ole Miss finis hed this season 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Southeastern Conference, including a 21-20 loss on Thanksgiving night to Mississippi State. Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore scored a potential tying touchdown with seconds left in the Egg Bowl, but was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after he pretended to urinate in the end zone like a dog. - AP College Football
