Tatum Bethune, Florida State, Player News

Florida State linebacker Tatum Bethune has decided to return for the 2023-24 season. "I'm back, see you guys in 2023," Bethune said in the 20-second video posted on Twitter. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound redshirt junior was one of 13 transfers to join the FSU roster after coming from UCF. He was second on the team in tackles (76) and tackles for loss (8.5) while recording 2.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

Bethune's decision to play for the Seminoles reunited him with former UCF defensive coordinator Randy Shannon, who was promoted to linebackers coach at FSU in 2022 after serving one season as a defensive analyst on Mike Norvell's coaching staff. "Outside of football, me and Coach Shannon have a very strong relationship," Bethune said back in January. "Being able to play for him and building that bond again and being able to see him every day was great. When I realized he got the linebackers coach job a few weeks ago, it was a no-brainer." Shannon recruited him from Miami Central High when he was defensive coordinator at Florida in 2017 and later when he took over in the same capacity at UCF in 2018. Bethune signed with the Knights as part of their 2019 recruiting class. Bethune later credited his relationship with The Battles End, a new name, image and likeness collective at Florida State, for making his decision easier. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State linebackers coach Randy Shannon knows that for the Seminoles succeed this season, they'll need to create negative plays on defense. Through the first two weeks of preseason camp and after Saturday's scrimmage, Shannon's group has met those expectations. "We felt like we've got a good group of new kids, guys that can do a lot of different things, playing different positions and making a lot of negative plays," said Shannon. "We felt like we created more negative plays. We're excited by the group and excited about what direction we are going." The linebackers are among the most well-rounded units on the team.

The addition of UCF transfer Tatum Bethune has solidified a group that features experience with Kalen DeLoach, Amari Gainer, DJ Lundy and young talent in redshirt sophomore Stephen Dix Jr. and true freshman Omar Graham Jr. "We're doing a lot of rotation with the linebackers," said Shannon. "Everybody's playing with the ones and everybody's playing with the twos, everybody is with the threes. It's about getting better and building at depth at linebacker." Bethune reunites with Shannon, who recruited him when he was defensive coordinator with the Knights from 2018-20. The Miami native is coming off an All-American Athletic Conference season, where he led the team with 108 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 interceptions. The redshirt junior has provided a calming presence in the middle of the defense. - Orlando Sentinel
