Luke McCaffrey is a dynamic playmaker with good hands that Bloomgren foresees being a vital part of the offense. A former quarterback at Nebraska who started three games at the position for Rice in 2021, McCaffrey made the switch to receiver in the sprin g by choice. A 4.9-second runner over 40 yards, McCaffrey is a viable option at receiver, along with Bradley Rozner, who missed most of the past two seasons, Cedric Patterson, and Tulsa transfer Sam Crawford. Last year's starters Jake Bailey and August P Itre transferred out. - Houston Chronicle

Former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey is on the move again. The now-former Louisville player announced on Twitter on Monday that he will be transferring to Rice to restart his college football journey. The news comes less than a week after Louisvill e head coach Scott Satterfield confirmed McCaffrey had left the program, in part because he wanted to be the starting QB. Rice, a member of Conference USA, finished 2-3 last season. The Owls are led by head coach Mike Bloomgren, who has a three-year reco rd of 7-23 (6-15) at the school. McCaffrey appeared in seven games for Nebraska last season as a redshirt freshman - starting two. He threw for 466 yards and one touchdown (against six picks), rushed for 364 yards and added three more scores on the groun d. His first career start came Nov. 14 against Penn State in a 30-23 triumph. The following week, he threw three picks in a crushing 41-23 loss to Illinois. - - Lincoln Journal Star

Louisville quarterback Luke McCaffrey is going back into the transfer portal. The Nebraska transfer, who just recently arrived on campus after committing in February, is leaving the Cardinals coach Scott Satterfield said on the radio this morning with Dr ew Deener. McCaffrey, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, was important depth at quarterback for a room that lacked it. It was unlikely that he would pass returning starter Malik Cunningham and backup Evan Conley on the depth chart. A sought-after four-star dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 recruiting cycle, the No. 257 overall recruit, McCaffrey went to Nebraska and redshirted his freshman year. As a true freshman, he played in four games before redshirting and completed 9-of-12 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 166 yards on 24 carries. - Courier Journal

Nebraska backup quarterback Luke McCaffrey has entered the transfer portal after starting two games and appearing in five others last season, the school's athletic department confirmed Tuesday. The brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey nearly beat out Adrian Martinez for the Cornhuskers' starting job last fall, and coach Scott Frost in November called the redshirt freshman "the future" at quarterback. McCaffrey replaced an ineffective Martinez as the starter for the third game, a win over Penn State, but committed four turnovers in a loss to Illinois the next week. Martinez returned as starter for the final four games as the Huskers finished 3-5. McCaffrey completed 48 of 76 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown and rushed 65 times for 364 yards and three TDs. He was on the sideline in street clothes for the final game at Rutgers. - AP College Football

Luke McCaffrey is the future at Nebraska as far as the quarterback position goes, Husker coach Scott Frost says. The redshirt freshman, though, may not be the present. In saying he hasn't determined a starter for Friday's noon game against Iowa (3-2), Frost reminisced about his time as a Nebraska starting quarterback, including a rough patch against Central Florida early in the 1997 national championship season. "I've been kind of benched here as a quarterback, for a short time during a game, and got booed when I came back into the game, to some degree," he said. "Sometimes you need that shakeup, and it puts a chip on your shoulder."There's no doubt in my mind Luke McCaffrey's the future around here, but right now to help us win, we've got to play the guy who gives us the best chance. I think Adrian's (Martinez) been playing with a little chip on his shoulder. Luke's playing well, so we're going to evaluate this week and see which one goes out there..."I feel good about both of them," the coa ch added. "We just need to keep coaching as well as we can, so we get the best that we can out of them." Frost said he feels both Martinez and McCaffrey possess the sort of talent that would allow them to rise the level of, say, Marcus Mariota, whom Fros t coached at Oregon, or McKenzie Milton, whom Frost coached at Central Florida. - Lincoln Journal Star

Luke McCaffrey, one week after replacing a struggling Adrian Martinez behind center and leading the Huskers to their first win, on Saturday found himself on the other side of calls for the backup to come into the game and create a spark as NU once again struggled to find any kind of consistency. The redshirt freshman finished 15-of-26 passing for 134 yards, carried the ball a whopping 26 times for 122 yards, scored two touchdowns and threw three interceptions. Nebraska's struggles certainly aren't conta ined to one position, and NU coach Scott Frost said as much after the game. But they're magnified at quarterback, where the playmaking and bravado that defined Frost's offenses at Central Florida and Oregon have disappeared over nine losses in Nebr aska's past 12 games. "Consistency of execution. We've got to be able to throw the ball down the field. I have to look at the tape, but I feel like we had some guys running open downfield," Frost said when asked what's holding NU's offense back. "Whether it's protection or vision, or just trusting it and throwing them on time, we've got to be a better football team at throwing the ball down the field. That's kind of how this offense is built, it always has been, and we're not good enough at it right now ." - Lincoln Journal Star

Luke McCaffrey had a hand in two touchdowns in his first start, Nebraska's defense made two huge late defensive stops and the Cornhuskers held on to beat Penn State 30-23 for their first win Saturday. McCaffrey took over for Adrian Martinez, who had star ted all of his 23 previous games at Nebraska (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten) but turned in flat performances in the Cornhuskers' first two games. McCaffrey looked good in the first half, but the Huskers generated only three points in the second and Penn State came ba ck from a 21-point deficit to make it close. A Top 10 team to start the season, the Lions (0-4, 0-4) are off to their worst start since Joe Paterno’s 2001 team also opened with four straight losses. Sean Clifford struggled again for Penn State, getting replaced by Will Levis after turning over the ball on two the Lions' first three possessions. - AP College Football

Frost was asked a key question as it pertains to the QB discussion. It's a question definitely on the minds of Husker fans: Will Frost consider playing McCaffrey at positions other than QB? The 6-foot-2, 205-pound McCaffrey saw time at receiver last sea son. "He's a quarterback and I want to make that clear," Frost said. "Right now, our offense moves exceptionally well when he's at quarterback. He finds a way to make a lot of plays work. He's throwing the ball really well, and I don't think anybody has any questions about his athletic ability or his speed." If McCaffrey really is "throwing the ball really well," well, that seems especially intriguing since his perceived strength is as a runner. His speed jumps off the page. Bottom line, you can't have a player of his caliber standing on the sidelines all season. "If he's one of the best players to have on the field and he's not playing quarterback, we'll certainly look for opportunities to make sure our best players are out there," Frost said. - Linco ln Journal Star

McCaffrey might not be in line to start at quarterback, but many are excited to see just how head coach Scott Frost and company decide to use him. Package player? Spot duty? One thing that's clear: McCaffrey is an explosive player and NU needs as many of those as possible. McCaffrey, remember, didn't play quarterback full time until his senior year of high school, which only adds to the intrigue considering now he has additional months to add strength and also to further immerse himself into quarterback play. - Lincoln Journal Star

There obviously isn't as much hype attached to Martinez this year. What's more, Nebraska redshirt freshman Luke McCaffrey will try to push Martinez for the starting job after playing well in four games last season. "Luke's hell on wheels ...He just a bri ght young cat who has a tremendous work ethic," the coach said. "He's done really well in the offseason. Cleaned some things up with his stroke that we've been working on since he arrived. That's getting better and better and better. "The little bit that we were able to work together in spring ball, I was pleased with his development with regards at least to his stroke."Verduzco clearly appreciates McCaffrey's enthusiasm for the sport, mentioning how well the Colorado native approached his tempor ary move to receiver late last season. "Hell, he was ready to do it," the coach said. "He knew all the routes, he knew all the combinations, he knew all the blocking patterns that were required of him. There were a few things he wasn't really detailed in . But for the most part, he was good to go. "I told coach Frost, 'Hey, coach, if you need any of these (quarterbacks) to play receiver, they'll be ready for you." - Lincoln Journal Star

Redshirt freshman quarterback Luke McCaffrey -- a fan favorite in part because he's, well, not the starter -- is working exclusively at QB right now. But come fall, if McCaffrey isn't "the guy," a move to receiver could be in play, Frost said. For now, t hough, Frost wants McCaffrey to try to win the starting quarterback job. So, let's see how this all plays out in the weeks leading to the April 18 Spring Game. Let's be patient. That's possible, right? Let's also make clear that Frost believes McCaffrey' s long-term future is at quarterback. But at the same time, the receiver door is open, for now.As for that discussion, one part in particular interests me: Could McCaffrey even pull it off at a high level? Isn't it pretty hard to do? "No, not real ly," Frost told me, citing McCaffrey's speed, athleticism and knowledge of the offense. "We didn't practice him at receiver at all before the Maryland game last season, and he just went out and did it because the quarterbacks know what everybody's suppos ed to do. "But I want to emphasize that he's not a receiver; he's a quarterback. We don't even entertain thoughts of that (McCaffrey playing receiver) until...he's not the quarterback and we determine we need another receiver. That's the only reason we'd even think about it." Frost then shared a conversation he's had with the 6-foot-2, 200-pound McCaffrey, who appeared in four games last season and completed 9 of 12 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 24 times for 166 (6.9 per carry). - Lincoln Journal Star
