LSU football coach Brian Kelly took a risk last spring when he decided to bring in Arizona State quarterback transfer Jayden Daniels from the portal. The Tigers already had three scholarship quarterbacks: Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howar d. Brennan had SEC starting experience. Nussmeier had a talented arm and could start in 2023 with Brennan gone. Howard was a top-40 freshman signee who could eventually push Nussmeier. But in came Daniels anyway. "I think we started with just wanting to add more competition (to the room)," Kelly said before the start of last year's spring practices. In the end, the move paid off for Kelly. Daniels won the starting job and held it for the rest of 2022. He led LSU to a 10-win season, an SEC West champions hip and the Tigers' first home win over Alabama since 2010.That success made the news of Daniels returning in 2023 an exciting one for most LSU fans. "I felt like I had unfinished business in college," Daniels said prior to LSU's Citrus Bowl win o ver Purdue. "So I wanted to come back and compete for a national championship." And Tiger fans should be excited; LSU has a Heisman Trophy candidate on its hands. Daniels, while playing under a new coaching staff, working behind a new offensive line and throwing to new weapons, was an above-average SEC quarterback in 2022. He threw for 2,913 yards, completed a career-best 68.6% of his passes and only threw three interceptions, seven fewer than in his final season at Arizona State. He was also one of the best running quarterbacks in college football. Daniels rushed for a career-high 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. He generated 4.52 yards after contact per rush attempt and forced 54 missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, leading all FBS quarterbac ks with at least 70 rush attempts in both categories. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels elaborated on his decision to return for the 2023 season on Saturday. Daniels, who transferred to LSU (9-4) from Arizona State this offseason, said he will be ready to play when No. 17 LSU faces Purdue (8-5) in the Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium on Monday (noon, ABC). "Ultimately, it was the best decision for me to come back and accomplish (more) in college," Daniels said. "I felt like I needed to grow (more) and I felt like I had unfinished business in coll ege." "So I wanted to come back and compete for a national championship."With Daniels back in the fold, LSU should at least have a national championship-contending caliber offense next season. Even with star wideout Kayshon Boutte's recent departu re, the Tigers are expected to bring back their entire starting offensive line, leading rusher Josh Williams, starting tight end Mason Taylor and top pass catchers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., plus a plethora of talented options behind that duo. Fo r Monday, however, the Tigers may be a bit light on players for Daniels to throw to. With Boutte and Jaray Jenkins opting out for the NFL Draft and Jack Bech transferring to TCU, LSU will only have three scholarship wide receivers available: Nabers, Thom as and Kyren Lacy. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

The biggest domino of LSU's offseason has fallen as starting quarterback Jayden Daniels announced Thursday in a social media post he is returning for one more season instead of entering the 2023 NFL Draft. The catalyst of the offense with his dual-threat ability, Daniels led the Tigers to a Southeastern Conference Western Division title after transferring from Arizona State. LSU will now bring back almost its entire offense, which can often indicate a productive year ahead. "This has been an amazing rid e and honestly, I am not ready to get off just yet," Daniels said in a statement. "That is why it is important that I announce I am returning for the 2023 season to fulfill the goal of an LSU Tiger and bring our fans another championship." While Daniels could have taken a chance in the draft, he can raise his stock if he stretches the improvements he made this year over an entire season.Daniels, who transferred two weeks before spring practice, will have a complete offseason with his receivers to work on their chemistry before the opener Sept. 3 against Florida State. If the passing game continues to develop with Daniels, that bodes well for Year 2 under coach Brian Kelly. While some draft-eligible players haven't revealed decisions, the Tigers could return their quarterback, the entire starting offensive line, a loaded receiving corps, every running back and starting tight end Mason Taylor. "We accomplished a lot this year and exceeded many people's expectations even though we came up short of some of our goals," Daniels said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has been dealing with an ankle injury, will play against No. 1 Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game, coach Brian Kelly said Thursday. "He's had a good week of practice," Kelly said. "He'll play for us on Saturday." Daniels suffered an ankle injury late in No. 14 LSU's loss last weekend to Texas A&M. He had his ankle taped and returned to the game. Importantly, Kelly said Daniels avoided a high ankle sprain. LSU's offense runs through Daniels, who h as accounted for 65% of the Tigers' offensive production. He threw for 2,566 yards with 15 touchdowns in the regular season. The team's leading rusher, he has gained 824 yards and scored 11 times on the ground. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The hollering of exuberant LSU players penetrated the walls of their locker room and echoed in neighboring rooms and hallways beneath the north end zone stands in Tiger Stadium. The rowdy celebration was more about the energy and sense of purpose the six th-ranked Tigers exhibited in a cold, wet, half-empty stadium against a heavy underdog than the mere fact that they won a game they were supposed to win. Noah Cain scored on three short runs, Jayden Daniels had touchdowns rushing and passing, and LSU met hodically pulled away from UAB for a 41-10 victory Saturday night.Daniels completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and ran for 111 yards on 12 carries. His top target was receiver Malik Nabers, who caught seven passes for 129 yards, including a 47- yarder on LSU's first touchdown drive. Brian Thomas also had a late TD catch for LSU (9-2). The comfortable victory meant LSU could continue to climb in the The AP Top 25 Poll after No. 5 Tennessee's 63-38 loss at South Carolina - depending on whether th e Tigers are leapfrogged by No. 7 USC, which won at rival UCLA 48-45. LSU is already locked into the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 1 Georgia on Dec. 3. But the Tigers can't afford any more losses if they want to be taken seriously as candidate for the four-team College Football Playoff. - LSU/AP College Football

Jayden Daniels ran for 25-yard touchdown in overtime and then found Mason Taylor for a do-or-die 2-point conversion, and 15th-ranked LSU defeated No. 6 Alabama 32-31 on Saturday night to give first-year Tigers coach Brian Kelly his first victory over Cri mson Tide coach Nick Saban. The surprising victory in a riveting game that included six second-half lead changes and a tying field goal by Alabama in the 30 seconds also gave LSU (7-2, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) control of the SEC West Division with tw o league games remaining. Alabama (7-2, 4-2) began overtime with the ball and took a 31-24 lead on Roydell Williams' second touchdown of the game. But Daniels needed just one play in overtime to score and force a decision by Kelly to try to tie it with a kick or let Daniels try to win it. "I just love the way our guys competed. I didn't want to keep going in overtime," Kelly said as jubilant fans stormed onto the field. "It just felt like it was the right time to try to win the game." Alabama, favored b y nearly two-TDs, lost in Tiger Stadium for the first time since 2010. LSU re-entered The Associated Press College Football poll at No. 18 on Sunday and No. 25 South Carolina earned a ranking for the first time in four seasons. The Bulldogs, who were idle, received 31 first-place votes and 1,530 points, and the Buckeyes got 18 first-p lace votes and 1,513 points. No. 3 Tennessee received 13 first-place votes. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Alabama also held their spots, with the Tigers receiving a first-place vote.No. 7 TCU moved up a spot after remaining unbeaten with a second-half comeback against Kansas State. Oregon jumped two spots to a season-high No. 8 after routing UCLA. Oklahoma State is No. 9, followed by Southern California and Wake Forest in a tie at No. 10. Jayden Daniels ran for three touchdowns and passed for two scores, and LSU roared back from an early two-touchdown deficit to hand No. 7 Mississippi its first loss this season, 45-20 on Saturday. The performance gave the dynamic Daniels the LSU record fo r touchdowns rushing in a season by a quarterback with nine. Daniels also has accounted for 11 TDs rushing or passing combined in the span of two games. He had three of each in a 45-35 victory at Florida last weekend. Reveling in the resounding triumph o ver a historical and highly-ranked rival, LSU fans stormed the field as the game ended. Now LSU (6-2, 4-1 SEC) is back in the race to win the SEC West - if the Tigers can beat No. 6 Alabama. After being outgained 200-80 in the first quarter and falling b ehind 17-3 on Jonathan Cruz's field goal to start the second quarter, LSU outscored Ole Miss (7-1, 3-1) 41-3 the remainder of the game. The Tigers finished with 500 total yards to 404 for coach Lane Kiffin's vaunted Mississippi offense.Daniels pas sed for 258 yards and ran for 121 without a turnover. His scoring passes went for 34 yards to Jaray Jenkins and 1 yard to tight end Mason Taylor. He ran for touchdowns of 3, 11 and 17 yards, the longest all but salting the game away in the fourth quarter . Josh Williams ran 1 yard for the Tigers' final TD late in the fourth quarter. Nearly everything went right for LSU in the second half. Even linebacker Harold Perkins Jr.'s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after a third-down stop at the Rebels' 15-yard l ine early in the fourth quarter couldn't turn the tide in the Rebels' favor. Down 11 points at the time, Ole Miss wound up having to punt anyway minutes later. Daniels then drove the Tigers 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-20. After first-quarter t ouchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards by Judkins, Ole Miss was threatening to go ahead 21-3 when LSU's defense finally got a stop on third-and-5 from the LSU 13, limiting the Rebels to a field goal. - LSU/AP College Football

Jayden Daniels accounted for six touchdowns - three passing and three rushing - and LSU beat Florida 45-35 Saturday night at The Swamp for its fourth consecutive victory in the series. Daniels finished with 349 passing yards - 115 of them to Kayshon Bout te - and 44 yards rushing. The Tigers (5-2, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) rebounded from a 27-point loss to Tennessee a week earlier and matched their longest winning streak against the Gators since 1977-80. This one, like so many of the recent matchups i n series history, came down to the final minutes. Trailing by a touchdown, Florida (4-3, 1-3) got a rare third-down stop with a little less than two minutes remaining. But freshman Damian Ramos kicked a 47-yard field goal with 1:52 to play to essentially seal the victory. Anthony Richardson tried to rally Florida, but his fourth-down pass fell incomplete, and LSU ran out the clock from there. Richardson played turnover-free football for the first time in six weeks, but the Gators needed him to play defe nse to make a difference in this one. He opened the game with a 51-yard touchdown pass and added a highlight-reel, 81-yard scoring run to start the fourth quarter. However, the Gators were too inconsistent in between. The Tigers had no such issues. They scored touchdowns on their first six possessions, without any help from a short field. They rolled up 469 yards on those drives, picking apart Florida's much-maligned defense, especially on third down. LSU moved the chains eight times in its first nine third-down attempts. The one miscue? Well, coach Brian Kelly's offense converted on fourth down. Florida finally forced a punt with about 13 minutes to play and followed with an 80-yard drive that ended with Trevor Etienne's 1-yard plunge. Trailing 42-35, the Gators looked like they had a game-changing interception with a little less than six minutes to play. But Jason Marshall's pick was negated by a roughing-the-passer penalty on teammate Gervon Dexter. Dexter drove Daniels to the ground and land ed on top of him after he released the ball. Richardson completed 15 of 25 passes for 185 yards and a TD to Justin Shorter on the second play of the game. Richardson also ran for 109 yards and a score. - LSU/AP College Football

The LSU defense held New Mexico to 88 total yards in a 38-0 shutout victory Saturday night at Tiger Stadium. While the defense helped propel the Tigers to their first shutout victory since 2018, LSU did see its starting quarterback Jayden Daniels exit th e game in the third quarter with an injury. Scrambling for 16 yards on a fourth-down play, Daniels was slammed down to the ground by AJ Haulcy and Dion Hunter. He didn't return to the game. Before exiting the game, Daniels had one of his most efficient g ames thus far, completing 24 of 29 passes for 279 yards. The LSU offense got going on its opening drive, marching 57 yards in eight plays, culminating with a 5-yard touchdown run by Armoni Goodwin for a 7-0 lead. After a 31-yard field goal by Damian Ramo s made it 10-0, Daniels led LSU on a methodical, 15-play, 88-yard drive with Goodwin capping things off with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0.Averaging 27.3 points coming into the game, New Mexico (2-2) struggled to develop any sort of rhyth m offensively, crossing midfield only once. Lobos senior quarterback Miles Kendrick completed only 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards. Nate Jones led the Lobos with 33 yards rushing on eight carries and Jaden Hullaby had the biggest play of the night for New Mex ico when he hauled in a 38-yard pass from Kendrick that moved the ball to the LSU 38-yard line - its deepest penetration of the night. Sacking Perkins four times on the night as a unit, freshman linebacker Harold Perkins led LSU defensively with eight ta ckles. Sophomore Garrett Nussemeier replaced Daniels in the third quarter, leading the Tigers to three touchdown drives to put the game away for LSU. - LSU/AP College Football

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels accounted for more than 300 yards of offense, including one touchdown passing and one rushing, and the Tigers wiped out a 13-point deficit en route to a 31-16 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night. Daniels comple ted 22 of 37 passes for 210 yards without an interception, and also rushed for 93 yards, mostly on scrambles that frustrated and wore down the Bulldogs. LSU (2-1, 1-0 SEC) outscored Mississippi State (2-1, 0-1) 21-0 in the fourth quarter and 31-3 during the game's final 31 minutes. Armoni Goodwin sealed it with his 47-yard touchdown run with 4:50 left. The Tigers didn't take its first lead until early in the fourth quarter, when they cashed in on Austin Williams' muffed punt on his own 10. Daniels ' spinning, tackle-slipping scramble up the middle on third and goal from the 3 made it 17-16 on what was also LSU's first third-down conversion of the game. The Tigers widened the margin with a 14-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that consumed six minutes. Daniels connected with Malik Nabers on three drive-sustaining passes - two on third down, followed by a surprise, 27-yard floater on fourth and 3. Josh Williams powered in from 7 yards out on the next play to make it 24-16. Nabers finished with six catc hes for 76 yards. LSU's defense initially looked like it might struggle with third-year Mississippi State coach Mike Leach's "Air Raid" offense. The Bulldogs drove 87 yards for a touchdown on their opening possession, capped by Jo'quavious Marks' 37-yard run. But the Tigers twice stopped MSU runs on fourth-and-short to keep the game close. - LSU/AP College Football

Former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels spoke with the media for the first time since transferring to Louisiana State in March and provided his thought process that brought on the decision to leave. "Decided to make the transfer, make the best de cision for me and my future," he said Tuesday. "Just the opportunity that presented itself to come in and compete at the highest level against the best conference in college football, the SEC West. "To be able to go here, be able to be around the talent that matches where I'm trying to go and where I'm trying to be. So that's the reason why I chose to come here." Daniels was one of many Sun Devils to leave the program via the transfer portal amid an NCAA investigation that forced ASU to bring in 43 new players. As the starting quarterback for the last three years, Daniels was certainly the most notable name to depart. The 21-year-old joins a Tigers squad that is currently in the midst of a quarterback competition. Alongside Daniels is redshirt fr eshman Garrett Nussmeier and five-star freshman Walker Howard. The group previously had four names involved before fifth-year senior Myles Brennan announced on Monday that he is stepping away from football. Brennan had been LSU's backup signal caller eac h of the last three years. Daniels said he has not been told he's the starter yet, while WWL's Kristain Garic reported with the Brennan news that Daniels is going to be the starter. Daniels called it one of the best quarterback rooms in the country and s aid everyone is ready to support each other no matter who the starter is. - Arizonasports.com

Did the ASU football team hold Jayden Daniels back? The QB's mother made some interesting comments about the LSU quarterback's former team. Jayden Daniels is expected by many to be the new starting quarterback for the LSU football team this season. But s ome fans of Daniels' previous team, Arizona State, evidently have some hard feelings for the QB and the way he suddenly departed Tempe for Baton Rouge after last season.Daniels' mom, Regina Jackson, addressed those Sun Devil fans in a recent conve rsation on Twitter Spaces, while also appearing to slam the ASU football program. "We wish them well...we just had to let it go," Jackson said. "They feel some type of way and I understand. I'm a businesswoman and I understand. However, LSU probably gai ned a lot of Arizona State fans cause they just waited for him to fail and it's OK." Last season Daniels completed 197 of 301 passes for 2,381 yards with 10 touchdowns but had 10 interceptions after coming into the season having thrown only three in his first two years combined (17 games). He also ran for 710 yards and six touchdowns, highlighted by a 48-yard run in the Sun Devils' 38-15 Territorial Cup win over Arizona. - Arizona Republic

As Arizona State manages low expectations from outside the program, it's easy to forget the Sun Devils' place in the larger fabric of college football. The transfer portal took from Tempe more than it gave back, and that could very well have implications in the College Football Playoff for 2022. ESPN's Bill Connelly patched together his list of 25 players who will have the largest impact in the College Football Playoff race, and two former Sun Devils made the cut: LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels a nd USC Trojans linebacker Eric Gentry. Daniels came in ranked 25th on the list in a tier that Connelly calls "spoiler quarterbacks." The quarterback probably would be higher on the list if Daniels had already locked down the starting nod over returnee My les Brennan and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier.Writes Connelly: Daniels is ungovernable. Among QBs with at least 375 dropbacks last season, his 15.1% rate of scrambles per dropback was comfortably the most, but he's good at it. He averaged 8. 9 yards per carry on scrambles and produced a raw QBR of 85.5 when passing from outside the pocket. LSU probably isn't going to contend for the SEC West, but with the Tigers' overall athleticism and Daniels' unique improv skills, they could beat any sing le team on the schedule. If he wins the job. LSU coach Brian Kelly says QB Jayden Daniels has "not been tapped into". Daniels brings 723 passes of experience and a combined 32-13 touchdown-to-pick ratio, which got tanked by a 10-10 ratio last season. - A rizonasports.com

LSU will have one of the most intriguing quarterback competitions in the country going on between sixth-year senior Myles Brennan, junior Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier. No one clearly separated themself dur ing spring practice, so head coach Brian Kelly said LSU will run plays tailored to their different skill sets during preseason practice. The quarterback competition will roll into fall camp, but Daniels brings the profile that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes at the position. He's just as capable as a runner as he is as a passer, and he has two years of eligibility remaining. As a three-year starter at Arizona State, Daniels threw for 6,024 yards and 32 touchdowns. On the ground, he compiled 1,288 yards and 16 touchdowns. Garrett Nussmeier and Myles Brennan each have a good shot at earning the starting job, but Daniels provides plenty of experience and talent. He'll have to get past the inconsistency he showed late during his time at Arizona State, throwing for 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2021. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings. No. 4. Jayden Daniels, LSU (from Arizona State). This slotting could look quite foolish if Daniels starts in the opener for the Tigers and looks awesome against Florida State, but I've already planted my flag on another LSU QB island this spring. Daniels is an electric athlete and should have a role in LSU's offense this fall, but Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier both had better springs and offer more consistency in the passing game. Brian Kelly likes running quarterbacks and Daniels did take the initial snaps in the spring scrimmage, so he remains a real factor in a fascinating QB race down in Baton Rouge. - On3.com

After LSU's spring game, coach Brian Kelly acknowledged the scrimmage gave no indication of who will start at quarterback next season. "We didn't clear up anything with the quarterback today," Kelly said. "We probably made it even more difficult." All th ree quarterbacks competing for the position - sixth-year senior Myles Brennan, Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier - rotated Saturday afternoon between the first- and second-team offenses. Nussmeier led the passe rs with 136 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, though he came close to throwing one along the sideline. He completed 56% of his passes (9 for 16) and a handful of throws were particularly impressive, including one down the opposite sideline to se nior Jaray Jenkins. Nussmeier placed the ball around two defenders, but Jenkins dropped the pass.Daniels, who took the first snaps, showed how his speed could shape LSU's offense if he wins the job. He finished with seven carries for 21 yards and one touchdown, but he would've had more yards in a live-contact situation. Refs quickly blew the plays dead, and defenders couldn't tackle the quarterbacks. Though more inconsistent, Daniels made some quality throws. He had a fade in the back of the end zone to Kyren Lacy broken up, and two plays later he lofted a 20-yard touchdown to Bech with touch. He also completed a 39-yard pass to Brian Thomas Jr. Daniels finished 3 of 9 for 68 yards. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels is transferring to LSU, where he will enter a wide-open competition to be the starter in coach Brian Kelly's first season with the Tigers. "Jayden is an outstanding player who will make our quarterback room even stronger," Kelly said Sunday in a statement. "He's a playmaker with a strong arm and the ability to make plays with his feet. We are excited to welcome Jayden to our program as we continue to build a roster of student-athletes who will compete for championships on the field and work just as hard in the classroom to earn their degree." Daniels entered the transfer portal last month, not long after Arizona State fired its offensive coordinator in the midst of an NCAA investigation. He has been Arizo na State's starter the last three seasons, throwing for 6,025 yards, 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 29 games. The junior has two years of eligible remaining after the NCAA granted an extra year to all athletes who competed during the pandemic-alte red 2020 season. - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels accounted for three touchdowns, Jack Jones returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown and Arizona State beat rival 38-15 on Saturday. The Sun Devils (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12) won in a blowout a year ago, but needed a big second half in the rematch to pull away. Daniels threw for two touchdowns and ran for a 48-yard score, sending Arizona State to its fifth straight win in the series. The question entering the game was whether a win would be enough to save coach Herm Edwards' job. Arizona S tate athletic director Ray Anderson confirmed after the game that Edwards would continue to be the coach.Arizona (1-11, 1-8) wanted a bit of revenge after losing 70-7 at home to Arizona State last season. The Wildcats moved the ball well in the fi rst half and Will Plummer had a career day, throwing for 346 yards and a touchdown. Arizona lost its payback bid by struggling in the red zone and with too many costly mistakes. It started off well, with Plummer picking apart Arizona State's defense thro ughout the first half. The Wildcats are the worst team at converting red-zone opportunities into touchdowns and were at it again: three deep first-half drives, three field goals. Plummer also was stripped on a sack that Arizona State's Tyler Johnson reco vered at Arizona's 1. Rachaad White ran it in the next play to give Arizona State a 14-9 halftime lead. Arizona State's offense, which sputtered most of the first half, revved up quickly with Daniels' scrambling, 48-yard TD run on the fourth play of the third quarter. He then hit Pearsall on a second 14-yard TD, this time a back-shoulder throw. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State's 28-10 win over Stanford marked the Sun Devils' fifth straight win by double digits in a Pac-12 game. The last ASU team with that type of streak was the one Jake Plummer led to the Rose Bowl after the 1996 season. With wins by margins of 6 3, 13, 22, 19 and 18, ASU is outscoring Pac-12 opponents by an average of 27 points dating to the 70-7 win over Arizona last season. - AP College Football

Arizona State's defense created turnovers, the offense churned out touchdowns on the ground. Everything else? Still needs some work. Darien Butler had two interceptions and No. 25 Arizona State used its punishing run game to overcome some sloppy moments in a season-opening 41-14 win over Southern Utah on Thursday night. "That's bad football. Bad. I'm a bad coach," Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. "That's bad football and we've got to fix that. If we're going to win games, games we want to try to w in, you can't do that."The Sun Devils were a bit rusty to start a season of high expectations, committing numerous miscues on special teams and 13 penalties for 135 yards. Arizona State still proved to be too much for the FCS Thunderbirds (0-2), f orcing four turnovers and running for six touchdowns to win its 22nd straight home opener. Rachaad White and DeaMonte Trayanum each ran for two scores. "I told them we've got to clean this up," said Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw for 132 yards before leaving in the third quarter with leg cramps. After playing just four games last season, Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels is chomping at the bit to show how much improvement he has made. Daniels has high expectations after being placed on the preseason watch lists for several awards, includi ng the Maxwell Award for most outstanding player. He will have to prove he belongs on those lists after playing in limited action a year ago. "Improving body-wise, physically, mentally, taking my game to another level. I feel like I took that big step fr om last year to this year and today I felt like it showed," Daniels said after the team's first practice. There is also the complication of mastering the nuances implemented by second-year offensive coordinator Zak Hill. "I mean, you can see just t he growth from last year to this year in the offense. It's a little more comfortable to be able to go out there and check the plays and do other things," Daniels said. "It just came through building that relationship with Coach Hill over the spring." Dan iels said he and Hill talk daily. "We talk to each other about what I can do better," Daniels said. "He's going to call plays but at the end of the day, it's up to me to make the plays right." - ArizonaSports.com

Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the wa tch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. Considered one of the premiere quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2021 season. Many college athletes have been busy since the name, image and likeness (NIL) ruling went into effect on July 1, including Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels signed his second NIL deal with Venezia's Pizzeria on Tuesday as he continues to spread his brand. The deal includes his very own pizza. "The JD5" comes with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms and extra cheese, and customers can get an extra large of the specialty pizza for $24.99. The NIL rule allows college athletes to profit off of their brand. Sports360AZ's Brad Cesmat reported that Daniels get a percentage of each pizza sold."It's still crazy to think that my name is on a pizza, and I have my own pizza," Daniels said during the Pac-12's media day on Tuesday. "If you're in Tempe, stop by, support, and show love to the pizza." This partnership comes just nine days after signing his first NIL deal with The Solution, an IV nutrition and hydration clinic in California. A player of Daniels' caliber will surely have more opp ortunities to profit off his name, image and likeness, but he said he won't let them distract him from his first priority - leading the Sun Devils to their first Rose Bowl since 1996. - ArizonaSports.com

Quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Arizona State Sun Devils figure to rebound from a tumultuous 2020 season that had more to do with extreme circumstances of a pandemic than any individual players' performances. He leads an ASU squad that is expected to be in the heart of the Pac-12 South mix thanks to a defense with almost all of its starters returning and an offense that has proven talent at every position group save for receiver. Even compared to the college football world at large, few teams can lin e up with the experience of Arizona State's roster. With that, expect Daniels, defensive tackle Jermayne Lole, center Dohnovan West, fifth-year cornerback Chase Lucas and others to pop up on more than a few of college football's many preseason award watc h lists for 2021. - Arizona Sports.com

Jayden Daniels passed for a touchdown and had two of Arizona State's six rushing touchdowns in the Sun Devils' 46-33 victory over Oregon State on Saturday night. Can Jayden Daniels factor into the running game more than he did last year? That should be a resounding "yes". Last year Daniel tallied 355 yards on 125 tries. His most notable scrambles were the 17-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds that gave ASU a 38-34 win over Washington State and the other a 7-yard run in the closing seconds at Michigan State that set up a game-winning 1-yard touchdown by Benjamin. But ASU ran a conservative offense because of the youth up front and didn't want Daniels takin g unnecessary risks. But Daniels has progressed, the line should be better and new coordinator Zak Hill's offense is more tailored to Daniels' strengths and one of those is getting out and improvising when a play breaks down. That is a dynamic the defens e is going to have to account for. - Arizona Republic

First-year wide receivers coach Prentice Gill said the spring practices were especially important for Daniels, the first ASU true freshman to start from the outset of his career. "In this system, you need elite quarterback play," Gill said. "That not jus t the play itself, that's organizing and moving the pieces around. The seven practices helped Jayden get used to that and when (No.) 5 is used to it even if our guys do get a little lost out there, Jayden can get things done. It was huge. If we didn't ha ve it, it would be really hard to function right now." Daniels averaged 274.8 yards total offense over 12 games in 2019 when ASU finished 8-5. He threw for 2,943 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Now listed at 185 pounds, the 6-3 Daniels said going home to California during early quarantine helped him to put on some weight. "Then come back here and get bigger and strengthen in different areas. I'm still not where I want to be, but to be put on some more muscle mass I'm able to t ake some more hits and get back up." Daniels seems pleased with the working relationship he is building with Hill. "He asks me what do I like, what do I want to run, and we just have different ways of getting to it. He's going back to the film to see wha t best fits me. It's very exciting knowing I'm able to go to somebody and talk to him about this is what I want to do or I like this but I don't like this." - Arizona Republic

The Arizona State football game vs. UNLV on Sept 12 will be played at the new Allegiant Stadium, a $2-billion facility that will be home to the Las Vegas Raiders. Negotiations with the Raiders made it possible for the ASU-UNLV game to be played at Allegi ant instead of at Sam Boyd Stadium on UNLV's campus. UNLV now is scheduled to play six of its seven home games at Allegiant including its season opener vs. California on Aug. 29. A game against Louisiana Tech still will be played on campus. "We are extre mely appreciative of the Raiders organization for working with us on hosting the Arizona State game at Allegiant Stadium," UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said Wednesday." Our community is energized behind new head coach Marcus Arroyo and h is team as they move into one of the greatest sports facilities in the world and getting to host two Pac-12 Conference opponents there this fall will make it an even better experience for our fans and student-athletes." As part of the agreement for the A SU game to be played at Allegiant, UNLV is moving its game against Colorado State to Oct. 23. Arizona State football fans already know they have something special in quarterback Jayden Daniels. A national radio host evidently believes it, too. Fox Sports Radio's Colin Cowherd praised the ASU QB on his show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, last week, saying that Daniels, who was a freshman last season, could be a future No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. "I honestly believe this," Cowherd said while talking to ASU coach Herm Edwards on his show. "Next year, it's going to be Trevor Lawrence at Clemson and Justin Fields at Ohio State. I think the following year, your quarterback is going to be the No. 1 pick potentially. Do you think he has that talent?"Daniels threw for almost 3,000 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions in his freshman se ason. So how does Edwards feel about his quarterback's talent? Edwards responded to Cowherd's question with this: "Well, he has talent, there's no doubt, and he's a hard worker. I think with (new ASU offensive coordinator) Zak Hill now on offense, I thin k it's going to fit a lot of things he can do well. That Boise State offense is something, I like it. They run the ball, they give you a lot of different formations, personnel groups. That's all NFL stuff and that's what guys want, make you go under cent er some. "I mean all those things occur, but it's just not only on the quarterback because those guys are only good as the guys that protect them. And you've got to have a good offensive line if you're going to win at any level and that's something we're continuing to try to build around here. But if we can protect him, this kid's got a chance to be really good. There's no doubt." - Arizona Republic

If any Arizona State fans are worried about losing coach Herm Edwards to the NFL, the ASU coach alleviated those fears earlier this week during an interview on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Cowherd asked the Sun Devils coach if he might consider returning to the NFL, should a team come calling. "No, this is it," Edwards told Cowherd. "This is my last stand right here. I'm going to build a program and hopefully we can win the Pac-12 and hopefully win a Rose Bowl and then hand it over to somebody else. Tha t's my goal." Edwards went 7-6 in his first season in Tempe in 2018. He went 8-5 last season and has a team projected to be a contender in the Pac-12 South in early predictions for the 2020 season.Edwards went 54-74 in eight seasons as a coach in the NFL. He went 39-41 in five seasons with the New York Jets from 2001-05 and 15-33 in three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-08. Edwards said he was having a blast at ASU. "I'm having a blast. I miss my players at this point in time in the fact with the (COVID-19) virus," Edwards told Cowherd. "As we're talking, I can't say enough about all the first responders, all the medical folks all over the country. All the people that are putting their lives in harms' way trying to save those that have caught the virus. It's remarkable to see when you turn the television on and watch all these doctors and just people who continue to go into buildings knowing you know what, 'I could come out with the virus.' Those are the heroes, Colin. Those are t ruly the heroes." - Arizona Republic

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels had quite the true freshman debut. He led the Sun Devils to eight victories, most notably one over then No. 6 Oregon in the next to last game of the regular season. Then came a Territorial Cup win over rival Arizo na and a Sun Bowl victory over Florida State. But he is participating in spring football for the second time as a Sun Devil and in some ways is going through the learning process all over again. New offensive coordinator Zak Hill has brought with him a v astly different offense that places more burden on the quarterback, a responsibility Daniels welcomes.Expectations on him last year were modest. But this season he is also being asked to step up as a leader, a role previously filled by the since-d eparted seniors. "He's going to be pressed upon to be a leader," Edwards said. "That wasn't required last year for him, done purposefully by me. I told him you don't need to lead, you need to play quarterback. Now this is his offense and he understands t hat." Daniels says right now the Sun Devils are working on base packages, with more detailed material added when the team convenes again at Camp Tontozona to start fall camp in August. Daniels is satisfied with where he is at but knows he has a long way to go. - Arizona Republic

With each team missing its standout rusher, defense dominated at Tuesday's Sun Bowl. Hardly pretty, but hardly a concern for Arizona State coach Herm Edwards. "Obviously it was a game not pleasing to the eye," he said. Willie Harts returned an intercepti on 25 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Arizona State to a 20-14 victory against Florida State. Harts, a freshman cornerback, halted a 14-0 surge by Florida State (6-7) and helped the Sun Devils (8-5) hang on for their fourth Sun Bowl v ictory, despite not scoring an offensive touchdown. "Our D was on fire tonight," Harts added. "It just shows the potential for our defense."James Blackman threw a 91-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass play in Sun Bowl history, to Tamorrion Terr y to give Florida State its first lead, 14-9, in the third quarter. The Seminoles trailed 9-0 at halftime. Cristian Zendejas kicked a Sun Bowl record-tying four field goals for Arizona State, including a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter to cut the FSU lea d to 14-12. Blackman's fourth interception of the game was returned by Harts to put the Sun Devils ahead for good with 10:06 left in the fourth. "When you get six turnovers, you should probably win the game," Edwards said. Jayden Daniels was named the ga me's MVP after going 12-for-28 passing for 198 yards to lead the Sun Devils. He also ran 36 yards and a 2-point conversion. - AP College Football
