J.T. Shrout, Arkansas State, Player News

Colorado quarterback JT Shrout will put his name into the NCAA transfer portal, announcing his decision Tuesday night. Shrout, a junior, started seven games last season for the Buffs (1-11, 1-8 Pac-12), completing 90-of-203 passes for 1,220 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. "I would like to thank you for all your love and support this last year," he wrote to CU fans on social media. "You stuck with this team through it all and I'm truly grateful for my time here playing in front of you." After starting two games early in the year, Shrout was a backup for three games until freshman Owen McCown was injured.

Shrout came off the bench to lead CU to its only win - 20-13 in overtime against California - on Oct. 15. He threw the game-winning touchdown to Montana Lemonious-Craig in overtime. Shrout then started the next five games before missing the finale with an injury. With new head coach Deion Sanders coming to CU and his son, Shedeur, slated to start at quarterback, it is likely Shrout will seek an opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere. - Daily Camera

J.T. Shrout threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Montana Lemonious-Craig in overtime, powering Colorado to a 20-13 upset of California in interim coach Mike Sanford's debut Saturday. Jack Plummer had Mason Starling wide open for the score on first-and-goal from the 10 on Cal's ensuing possession but strong safety Trevor Woods arrived just after the pass and popped the ball loose. When Plummer's fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the students stormed the field to celebrate Colorado's first win of the season.

Sanford inherited a team that was off to just the fourth 0-5 start in school history, one that cost Karl Dorrell his job. Sanford placed an immediate emphasis on physicality and takeaways, which paid off on Colorado's first defensive series with Tyrin Tyler's sliding interception, the Bears' first turnover in four games. Cal (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) entered the game as a 15 1/2-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but Dario Longhetto was wide left on field-goal tries going both ways, missing from 54 yards in the first quarter and 48 in the second. Longhetto was good from 34 yards as time expired in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. The Bears won the toss and chose to start out on defense. - Colorado/AP College Football

As quarterback Maddox Kopp stood at the podium on Tuesday, answering questions from the media for the first time since joining the Colorado Buffaloes, JT Shrout walked to the back of the media scrum. Shrout, a junior quarterback, pretended to hold out a microphone and laughed a bit as he listened to Kopp. Earlier in the morning, Shrout "was out there celebrating any single victory," offensive coordinator Mike Sanford said. "Not because it was about him, but because he loves football that much, and he missed football that much." Mentally and physically, Shrout is in a much different place than he was 11 months ago. A knee injury on Aug. 14, 2021, cost him the entire season. This week, for the first time since then, he has been fully cleared to practice and he's once again competing for the starting job with incumbent Brendon Lewis.

"Really happy to be out there again," Shrout said when he took his turn at the podium. After three seasons at Tennessee, where he played in eight games (with one start), Shrout transferred to CU in January of 2021. He was looking for a chance to start and spent the entire offseason battling for the job. During a live scrimmage at Folsom Field, he made a cut to his right, tore up his knee, and was done for the year. "It was depressing almost," he said. "It was really hard. Football is my first love, so not being able to go out there and play was really difficult for me. But I tried to stay in it mentally as much as I could. That was helpful." - Daily Camera

Junior quarterback JT Shrout has been unable to fully participate this spring as he continues recovery from an August knee injury. He has been able to get a lot of work in, however, particularly in seven-on-seven drills. "It's been good for him," Dorrell said. "It's unfortunate that he can't get more work than that. That's his challenge that he fights every day is that he only gets the seven-on-seven reps and he doesn't get any team or anything like that. His development in his mind, I'm sure he would tell you, is not good enough, because he's not getting that type of work, but he's got this summer." Dorrell said Shrout should be full-go when the Buffs get back together for workouts in June. - Daily Camera

This certainly wasn't how Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell wanted to settle on a starting quarterback. On Monday, Dorrell announced that sophomore JT Shrout has a "significant injury" to his knee, sustained during the Buffaloes' scrimmage at Folsom Field on Saturday. Returning freshman Brendon Lewis is now slated to be CU's starter when the Buffs open the season Sept. 3 at Folsom Field against Northern Colorado. "They did the MRI and he does have a significant injury and he will be out for a period of time," Dorrell said.

Asked if there was a chance Shrout could return this year, Dorrell said, "I don't know. We'll see after the surgery. I know that sometimes when they get in there, they find out, 'Oh, it wasn't as bad.' It's hard to tell." For now, however, it's a tough break for Shrout and the Buffs. Lewis and Shrout had battled all offseason for the starting job, with coaches often saying the competition was extremely close. Dorrell had planned to settle on a starter later in camp. On Friday, he said Shrout and Lewis have been "literally 1A and 1B. They both are playing really well." - Daily Camera

A transfer from Tennessee, he enrolled at CU in January. During his three seasons with the Volunteers, Shrout played in eight games, including one as a starter. The most experienced quarterback on the CU roster, Shrout completed 37-of-69 passes for 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions during his career with the Vols. Last year, he was 24-of-42 for 315 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. In his last game at Tennessee, he played against Texas A&M - CU's opponent in Week 2 this year. Shrout has a big arm, and is more of a pocket passer than others on the roster. "JT Shrout flashed some really good things in spring ball," Chiaverini said. "He's got a strong arm; he's got really good touch; throws a really good deep ball; has good presence." - Daily Camera

Although he's played in games at the college level, JT Shrout had some catching up to do this spring when he joined the Colorado football team. As the Buffaloes crossed the mid-point of spring practice on Wednesday, however, Shrout is making a good impression. "For a newcomer, he's behind the eight ball a little bit but he's done a great job, studying, really putting in the time in the offseason to be comfortable at this point in spring ball," CU quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf said Wednesday after the Buffs' eighth practice of spring. A transfer from Tennessee, Shrout enrolled at CU in January. On Wednesday, the Division I council reportedly approved a one-time transfer exemption, making Shrout eligible to play this fall. While that was expected, it boosts the CU quarterback room to know Shrout will be available.

A 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore, Shrout has three seasons to play at CU. At Tennessee, he eight played in eight games, including one start, completing 37-of-69 passes for 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. "He's been very good," Langsdorf said. "We just ran a two-minute drill just now and he had really good command of the huddle, the signals, getting guys lined up decision making. He led us on a touchdown drive. "For a guy that's not been here very long, I'm very pleased. He's a really smart quarterback, and that's helping him. He's put in some time here in the short period and he's been very comfortable. You put somebody in a two-minute drill, you get to know a little about what their level of understanding is, and we threw a lot at him right there. He went down the field and made a nice touchdown pass. I feel really good about his progress." - Daily Camera

Colorado is adding a veteran to its quarterback room. On Sunday night, former Tennessee quarterback JT Shrout announced that he will transfer to CU. He will have three seasons to play. Shrout, listed at 6-foot-3, 213 pounds, has been mostly a backup at Tennessee the past three seasons, but split time with freshman Harrison Bailey during the final three games this season. He announced his decision to transfer after the Volunteers' finale against Texas A&M on Dec. 19; he threw for 104 yards and a touchdown in that game. - Daily Camera

The Tennessee Volunteers used four quarterbacks on their way to a 3-7 season in 2020. Half of them have decided not to stick around for 2021. Redshirt sophomore J.T. Shrout, who played in each of Tennessee's final three games against Florida, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, entered the NCAA transfer portal Tuesday and plans to play his final three season elsewhere. Shrout's decision follows that of fifth-year senior Jarrett Guarantano, who entered the portal within an hour of Saturday's 34-13 loss to Texas A&M inside Neyland Stadium. Shrout completed 24 of 41 passes for 315 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in Tennessee's last three contests. He also played in four games during the 2019 season, with his lone career start resulting in a 30-7 victory over UAB. - Chattanooga Times Free Press
