Maryland football has finalized its coaching staff for the 2023 season with the additions of offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and safeties coach Zac Spavital, the program announced Thursday. Gattis, who will also coach quarterbacks at Maryland, was the offensive coordinator at Miami in 2022, but the school fired him after one season. The Hurricanes logged 23.6 points and 367.1 yards per game. Gattis has experience in the Big Ten, working as Michigan's offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021. Gattis won the 2021 Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant. "The additions of Josh and Zac really bolsters our already strong coaching staff," Coach Michael Locksley said in a statement. "Josh and I have a strong relationship and a proven track record of working together to produce a potent offense. He and I share many of the same philosophies, and it should be a very smooth transition. Zac comes to us with a history of being part of defenses that have a tremendous amount of success, especially when i t comes to being aggressive and taking the ball away."Gattis will be part of a new-look offensive staff after Locksley lost his top two offensive assistants after last season. Locksley recently hired longtime college head coach Kevin Sumlin as the co-coordinator and tight ends coach. Gattis worked with Locksley at Alabama in 2018, when Locksley led the record-setting Crimson Tide offense and Gattis served as the co-coordinator and wide receivers coach. At Maryland, Gattis will inherit an offense led by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who will be Maryland's starter for the fourth straight season. Taulia Tagovailoa announced Wednesday he is returning to Maryland to play next season. Tagovailoa, who holds a slew of school passing records, will try to help the Terrapins continue their recent rise under coach Michael Locksley. Maryland has won bowl g ames each of the past two seasons after finishing below .500 in the previous six. "My goal when coming to Maryland was to help Coach Locksley turn this program around," Tagovailoa said. "After winning back-to-back bowl games, I believe we have things goi ng in the right direction. But we're not done yet. I'm not done yet."The Terps went 8-5 this past season and were competitive against both Michigan and Ohio State. Tagovailoa, the brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, has stabilize d the QB position at Maryland. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is Maryland's all-time leader in career passing yards (7,658), total offensive yards (7.843), passing touchdowns (50) and completion percentage (68%). In 2021, he established single-season school records for passing yards (3 ,860), completions (328), completion percentage (69.2%) and touchdowns (26). This past season, Tagovailoa was named second-team All-Big Ten Conference by the coaches after completing 262 of 391 passes (67%) for 3,008 yards and 18 touchdowns.Tagova iloa is currently contemplating whether to return to Maryland for his senior season or declare for the NFL draft. Taulia Tagovailoa threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Octavian Smith, Chad Ryland kicked three field goals and Maryland outlasted No. 25 North Carolina State 16-12 to win the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Friday. Tagovailoa finished 19 of 37 for 221 yards with two i nterceptions. Roman Hemby ran for 65 yards rushing on 24 carries for Maryland (8-5), which won its second straight bowl game. Jakorian Bennett, who helped seal the win with a late interception, was named the game's Most Valuable Player. The Terrapins' de fense held N.C. State to 27 yards rushing on 18 carries and kept the Wolfpack out of the end zone. Ben Finley, one of four different starting quarterbacks for North Carolina State this season, completed 22 of 48 passes for 269 yards with two interception s and couldn't find the end zone. All of N.C. State's points came off the leg of All-American kicker Christopher Dunn, who converted field goals of 38, 19, 38 and 26 yards.Redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr., who had only thrown 45 passes all seas on for Maryland, got the start at quarterback for Maryland over Tagovailoa. But he only lasted one series before giving way to the Terrapins' regular-season starter. Maryland took a 10-9 lead in the second quarter when Tagovailoa found Smith in the back left corner of the end zone for the game's only touchdown. North Carolina State (8-5) certainly had its chances, penetrating the Maryland 25-yard line four times, but was forced to settle for field goals each time. The biggest opportunity to seize moment um came in the fourth quarter when Rakeim Ashford intercepted Tagovailoa at the N.C. State 35. But the Terrapins defense answered with a third-down stop and forced a field goal. N.C. Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 342 yards and a touchdown, Roman Hemby ran for three TDs, and the Maryland defense allowed just two first downs through the first 2 1/2 quarters of a 37-0 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Jeshaun Jones had nine catches for 15 2 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who snapped a three-game losing streak and completed their first seven-win regular season since 2014. Rutgers (4-8, 1-8 Big Ten) finished its season on a five-game skid. Tagovailoa, who has dealt with knee probl ems this year, missed a few plays during this one, but Maryland (7-5, 4-5) could have won this game even without a big offensive performance.The Terps lost two fumbles in Rutgers territory in the first quarter, but after stopping the Scarlet Knigh ts on fourth down near midfield, Maryland drove for the game's first touchdown, a 1-yard run by Hemby on the first play of the second. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa aggravated a previous knee problem last weekend, and coach Michael Locksley expressed relief that the injury wasn't more serious. Locksley said Tagovailoa would be a game time decision this Saturday against Northwes tern after the standout quarterback was carted off during his team's win at Indiana. Tagovailoa, whose brother Tua has missed time in the NFL recently following a head injury, left Saturday's game against the Hoosiers early in the fourth quarter. Locksle y said Tuesday he initially sprained an MCL in a loss at Michigan last month and then aggravated that against Indiana. Tagovailoa had an MRI after the Michigan game and another one Sunday, and Locksley said the more recent one showed no further structura l damage. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa had a lot on his mind this week. That was only natural after his brother Tua was stretchered off with a head injury while playing for the Miami Dolphins. "They're really, really close," Terrapins coach Michael Locks ley said. "I think the one thing that was able to settle him down, was he was finally able to get a FaceTime with Tua, and Tua basically said, "Hey, I'm fine man. Go play." Taulia Tagovailoa threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Corey Dyches with 7:30 remaining, and Maryland held on for a 34-27 victory over SMU on Saturday night. Roman Hemby ran for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who overcame 15 penalties to win th is matchup of flawed-but-unbeaten teams. The Mustangs (2-1) had three of the game's five turnovers, and they lost the ball on downs at the Maryland 9 when Tanner Mordecai's fourth-down pass to the end zone sailed high with 2:31 remaining. SMU got the bal l back one more time but turned it over on downs again near midfield with 46 seconds left. Maryland trailed 20-17 at halftime, and the Terrapins (3-0) wasted an opportunity early in the third quarter after driving to the SMU 6. Taulia Tagovailoa wasn't happy with himself after failing to throw a touchdown pass in Maryland's season opener. He made up for it in Week 2 - and then some. Tagovailoa threw for 391 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, and the high-powered Maryland Terrapins defeated the Charlotte 49ers 56-21 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 for the third time in four seasons under head coach Michael Locksley. Tagovailoa connected on TD passes of 39 and 45 yards to Jacob Copeland and 14 and 16 yards to Jeshaun Jones i n the first half as the Terrapins scored touchdowns on their first five possessions to build a 35-14 lead. Tagovailoa had one of the best seasons by a quarterback in Maryland history in 2021. He set the single-season record in passing yards (3,860) and completions (328) while tying former quarterback Scott Milanovich for the most passing touchdowns (26). But more importantly, Tagovailoa, the brother of former Alabama star and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, provided much-needed stability at the position, becoming the first quarterback since C.J. Brown in 2014 to start every game.But the Ala bama transfer wasn't flawless last season. His decision-making was an issue at times, as he often threw the ball into tight coverage. In the Terps' 51-14 home loss to then-No. 5 Iowa, he threw five of his 11 interceptions. The spring game will be nowhere close to the competition level Tagovailoa will face during the regular season. However, it will be interesting to see if the third-year starter shows improvement as a decision-maker while strengthening his connections with the receivers. If Maryland wan ts to build off its first winning season in seven years, the Terps will need Tagovailoa to continue to make strides as a signal-caller. - Baltimore Sun

Maryland earned its first bowl berth since 2016 as record-setting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdowns and ran for another in a 40-16 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Halfback Tayon Fleet-Davis also had a big-day with a bowl-bid on the l ine, rushing for a career-best 152 yards and two touchdowns as the Terps (6-6, 3-6 Big Ten) rolled up 575 yards in total offense. Fleet-Davis scored on runs of 13 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter. Tagovailoa had touchdown passes of 25 and 11 yards to Co rey Dyches and 38 yards to Brian Cobbs in getting the Terps bowl eligible. He also tallied on a 10-yard run as Maryland opened a 20-2 halftime lead and never looked back.Rutgers (5-7, 2-7) was seeking its first bowl berth since 2014. Tagovailoa fi nished 21 of 30 for 312 yards. The yardage gave him 3,595 yards, breaking the Terps’ single-season record of 3,499 set by Scott Milanovich in 1993. The University of Maryland announced Monday that junior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was named to the 85th annual Maxwell Award watch list. The award is given to the top player in the FBS regardless of position. Tagovailoa is the first Terp since former running back Anthony McFarland in 2019and first Maryland quarterback since Danny O'Brien in 2011 to make the Maxwell Award watch list. Tagovailoa appeared in four games for the Terps during the 2020 season, throwing for 1,011 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Maryland (2-2) quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa actually didn't look rusty early, pushing multiple Maryland drives deep into IU territory to start. Indiana's defense did enough to stop him, grabbing a pair of interceptions before the intermission. But Tagov ailoa still had 162 yards passing at half, though he'd completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes. The Hoosiers' game plan on that side of the ball developed slowly, soft coverage on the outside shifting as the game wore on. Pressure started to bother him in the second quarter and really ratcheted up in the third. At the same time, that soft coverage became tighter, forcing Tagovailoa to hold the ball longer than he should have. His third pick came after a sack made by good coverage got the Maryland sophomore jumpy enough to force a bad pass over the middle right to a waiting Micah McFadden. The Maryland football team arrived back in College Park around 4 a.m. Sunday after a disappointing defeat at Northwestern. The loss already had marinated for a few hours on the bus and plane as the team traveled home. Taulia Tagovailoa has been granted an NCAA waiver to play this fall for Maryland, a source confirmed to AL.com. Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphin QB Tua Tagovailoa, left the Alabama program in May. It's an announcement - a massive piece of news for Locksley and Maryland - that came as a surprise to many in the college football world.
