After a foot injury kept him out of spring practice, senior linebacker Dallas Gant has been back on the field for Ohio State in preseason training camp. Gant said he has been participating in team workouts since earlier this summer. But he added that he is still recovering from the setback and not quite at 100%. "I'm getting there," he said. "Slowly but surely. I'll be ready for the season, I promise you." As the Buckeyes replace an entire linebacker corps this offseason, Gant is among the leading candi dates for a larger role. He spent the previous seasons as Tuf Borland's backup at middle linebacker. His absence in the spring marked a difficult start to his offseason. He missed out on reps, though he found other ways to remain involved with the linebackers group. "I did my best to be there for the other guys," Gant said. "They kind of needed somebody that could help show them the way. We had a lot of young people playing, and springtime is really the time to develop those young players. "So I j ust tried to be there, watch film with them, try to go to office meetings and stuff like that, to kind of help them through that. It's frustrating not being able to play and get better, but I kind of just put that aside and said I'll be back soon." - Col umbus Dispatch

Dallas Gant opened his Zoom conference with reporters Thursday by revealing he is not playing this spring due to what he called a "foot issue." He did not want to go into specifics about the injury's origin or nature. He did say he expects to be back to full participation this summer. "Obviously it's hard," Gant said of the injury. "Spring is a time to develop skill sets. I have to find a different way, focusing on things I can focus on." Gant is one-third of a group of senior linebackers blocked in rec ent seasons by the four seniors who completed their careers in 2020. Last season he backed up Tuf Borland at Mike linebacker and is the presumptive starter there for this fall. Gant collected 17 tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in 2020. - Clev eland Plain Dealer
