Devin Leary, Kentucky, Player News

New Kentucky football quarterback Devin Leary was a full participant in the first day of spring practice Monday as he works his way back from a torn pectoral muscle that ended his 2022 season after six games at N.C. State. "I know he was on a pitch count ," Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said. "But the way we rotate quarterbacks and have depth, it didn't affect the way I saw practice." Leary's availability for spring practice is a significant boost for a Wildcat offense that has to replace likely top-10 NFL Draft pick Will Levis at quarterback and bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season. When last fully healthy in 2021, Leary threw 35 touchdowns and just five interceptions to earn a spot as one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which goes to college football's top quarterback. Leary was ranked as the top available quarterback in the transfer portal when he committed to Kentucky in December. Now, Leary can work on building chemistry with a group of talented but still young receivers led by sophomores Barion Brown and Dane Key. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who returned to Lexington after one year as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, will have his projected starting quarterback available as he wor ks to teach his scheme to those young playmakers this spring. "Devin is just waiting to lead," Stoops said. "What I mean by waiting is he's earning it and he's doing it respectfully. He can take over a room in five minutes, but he knows that it's about g oing out and proving it day in and day out and not forcing that...I think it's very important to just be authentic, be who you are but also lead and find your voice in the right time and the right moment." - Herald Leader

Robert Hinson knows both sides of Devin Leary's personality. One is the polite gentleman with a constant smile on his face. The one who will sign a thousand autographs. The one who won't turn down a photo request from an admiring fan. The one who once wa s the face of North Carolina State's football program - and, in due time, will assume that same role at Kentucky. Then there's the other side. Not mean. Just motivated. "Folks better not ever take (those things) as him not being a competitor," Hinson, Le ary's coach at Timber Creek High School in New Jersey, told The Courier Journal over the phone last month, "because that smile will turn into a growl in a minute. He is a fierce competitor, and he loves to prove people wrong." An avid college football fo llower might wonder: How many doubters could Leary, the ACC's preseason player of the year last season as N.C. State's quarterback, possibly possess?Enough that Hinson becomes animated at the thought of it. "Us guys who coach, and even his family, we look at all the media prognosticators who say, 'This guy is going to be a great NFL guy' or 'This guy is going to translate great to the NFL game,'" Hinson said. "... Or they're eventually going to be something. But Devin already has shown he has tho se abilities. I think he's still flying under the radar." The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Leary will have the opportunity to showcase his quarterbacking talent to those not already aware - to Hinson's delight - when the Wildcats begin their 2023 campaign. Transf erring from N.C. State in December, Leary will suit up for his sixth, and final, college season this fall at Kentucky. It's a scenario few could have envisioned last summer. Blame a season-ending injury last year with the Wolfpack, his second in three ye ars, for that. As Leary continues to recover from his latest injury, he's embarking on a new challenge: stepping into the void left by former UK quarterback Will Levis. - Courier Journal

Former North Carolina State quarterback Devin Leary and former Northern Illinois left tackle Marques Cox, both projected to start for the Wildcats in the fall, expressed optimism about the status of their rehabilitation from injuries that ended their 202 2 seasons early in interviews with reporters Wednesday but stopped short of placing a specific timetable for their return to the field. UK Coach Mark Stoops previously said he expected both players to be available for at least part of spring practice but said he was unsure if either would be limited. "Absolutely on schedule," Leary said Wednesday. "I feel really good. Really just taking it day by day and making sure I'm following the doctors' protocols and listening to the trainers in the training room. The strength and conditioning staff just keeping me on pace. But right now I'm in a really good spot."Leary entered the 2022 season as the preseason ACC Player of the Year and a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate, but his season ended after just six games when he tore the pectoral muscle on his right side in an Oct. 8 game against Florida State. The injury required surgery just more than a month later. The torn pectoral muscle was the second major injury for Leary, who also saw his 2020 season end early due to a fractured fibula. "Honestly, it was just two freak accidents," Leary said. "It can be frustrating, but that's the game we sign up to play. It's a violent sport. At the end of the day, I'm still grateful to be here. Still grateful to be around awesome doctors, awesome trainers to where I'm standing here in front of you today getting ready to play this season. Obviously in the moment it's very unfortunate, but at the same time, I'm a guy that lives by everything happens for a reason. I know I'll bounce back and play better than I ever have before." - Herald Leader

The incoming quarterback transfer from North Carolina State might not boast the over-the-top physical tools that have made Will Levis a darling of NFL Draft projectors. But Devin Leary is a far more polished and accomplished college QB than Levis was whe n he came to UK from Penn State in 2021. Over his four seasons (2019-2022) with the Wolfpack, Leary threw for 6,807 yards while completing 60.2 percent of his throws with 62 touchdowns vs. 16 interceptions. "This guy can throw the football as good as any body in the country," Coen said. Where the 6-foot-1, 212-pound Leary has been vulnerable is to injury. In 2020, Leary's season ended after four games due to a broken fibula. Last year, Leary was sidelined after six games due to a torn pectoral muscle. - Herald Leader

Kentucky offensive coordinator, fresh from coaching the Los Angeles Rams, took a look at his new players, starting with quarterback Devin Leary, who transferred from NC State."I do believe that this guy can throw the football as good as anybody in the co untry. He wanted to come to Kentucky to obviously win football games and have an opportunity to win an SEC championship but also to be developed into a future NFL quarterback. He knows that he needs to jump under center a little bit and do some of the th ings that he hasn't done in his career up to this point in order to have some more comfort going into play at the highest level of football. "A lot out of this is going to be about Devin and what he's comfortable with. It's his last year of football, and I'd be crazy to walk in there and say, 'This is what you're doing. This is how you're doing it,' when maybe he's completely uncomfortable doing some of those things. It's going to be a collaboration - some of the things that he was successful with in hi s past, but also some of the things that we know we need to do in order to operate in the SEC." - Courier Journal

Potential No. 1 draft pick Will Levis left Kentucky at the end of the season to begin preparing for his pro career, but the transfer portal just might produce a ready replacement. Kentucky won't have Levis or running back Chris Rodriguez in the Music City Bowl on New Year's Eve, serving in a coaching role instead.Leary threw for 3,433 yards with 35 touchdowns and just five interceptions in 2021 but played only six games in 2022. Devin Leary threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns - including a 75-yarder on the first play from scrimmage - and No. 12 North Carolina State routed UConn 41-10 on Saturday night. Leary completed 32 of 44 passes for the Wolfpack (4-0), while throwing to uchdowns to four different receivers, including one to sophomore Porter Rooks for the first score of his career. Victor Rosa scored the lone touchdown for UConn (1-4) on an 11-yard run late in the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack, tuning up for a showd own with No. 5 Clemson next week, wasted no time in putting points on the board as Leary connected with Thayer Thomas on the very first play from scrimmage. It was the longest play from scrimmage of the season for N.C. State, and it was also the first ti me the team has scored on its first offensive play of a game since 1991. N.C. State scored on its first five possessions and led 31-0 before UConn got on the board. After Camryn Edwards intercepted Leary, Noe Ruelas kicked a 28-yard field goal for the Hu skies as time expired in the second quarter. Devin Leary tied a program record by accounting for six touchdowns and No. 18 North Carolina State's defense surrendered 150 total yards as the Wolfpack beat Charleston Southern 55-3 in Saturday's home debut. Leary threw four TD passes, including a perfe ct 24-yard wheel route to Jordan Houston down the left side and then a 40-yard strike over the middle to Anthony Smith after he shrugged blitzer Nick Perry off his back. Leary's two rushing scores included a 12-yard keeper in the first quarter, when the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year bounced off three hard hits before hitting the end zone for the game's first TD. Celebrating his 23rd birthday, Leary wrapped up his day by hitting Chris Toudle for a 27-yard TD down the middle and a 45-0 lead with 12:48 left in the third. The game offered N.C. State (2-0) a chance to regroup from last week's 21-20 win at East Carolina, with the Wolfpack carrying a No. 13 ranking in the AP Top 25 to Greenville and taking the victory when the P irates missed two critical late kicks. That game was full of problems after halftime, including coming up scoreless on two drives with a combined six goal-line snaps as well as sputtering to 25 fourth-quarter yards. That made recent days, along with kick off against the Buccaneers (0-2) of the Championship Subdivision, a chance to clean up mistakes. Charleston Southern's top highlight was a 48-yard field goal from Sam Babbush midway through the third quarter to break up the Wolfpack's shutout bid. Ross M almgren threw for 111 yards but found himself under repeated pressure. Charleston Southern managed 36 yards rushing on 15 carries to remain winless all-time against Bowl Subdivision teams. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

No. 13 North Carolina State topped East Carolina 21-20 on Saturday after Pirates kicker Owen Daffer missed an extra point with 2:58 left and a 41-yard field goal with 5 seconds to go. The Pirates (0-1) were in position to hand the Wolfpack a surprising l oss when they got the ball back late down 21-20, not to mention offer Daffer a shot at redemption after he pulled the tying PAT wide left after Rahjai Harris' short touchdown run. Holton Ahlers' keeper set Daffer up with a makeable field goal in the fina l seconds, but he missed this one wide right to stun a once-rowdy crowd and leave many fans putting their hands on their heads in disbelief. The Wolfpack (1-0) celebrated the miss, with Shyheim Battle emphatically waving that the kick was no good w hile coach Dave Doeren pumped his right fist. Still, the moment appeared to be more about relief than jubilation for a team that had a long list of troubles in its latest bumpy trip to Greenville. This time, at least, it all came in a win. Devin Leary, t he preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, but he had a costly interception with about 5 minutes left that set up East Carolina's late touchdown drive. The Wolfpack also came up empty on six goal-line plays in the fourth quarter, first with a goal-line fumble by Jordan Houston and then with talented youngster Demie Sumo-Karngbaye getting stuffed four straight times to end another drive. In fact, the difference in this game - Duffer's misses aside - ca me on a blocked punt by Jasiah Provillon deep in ECU's end that Sean Brown recovered in the end zone late in the first quarter. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Devin Leary on trying to improve: "My biggest emphasis this offseason comes with the defensive identification - whether there is a certain pressure or a certain look that is bad with the specific play that we have, getting us out of those looks. That was my biggest thing this spring that Coach [Tim] Beck [the offensive coordinator] kind of took the leash off me - 'Hey, if you see something that you feel as if this play isn't going to work, just get out [of it] and check it." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Devin Leary is coming off a record-breaking season during which he threw for 35 touchdowns, a single-season school record, passing Philip Rivers. Leary has thrown for 51 career touchdowns at N.C. State, good enough for sixth all-time. In two seasons as t he starting quarterback for the Pack, Leary has posted a 12-3 record. After suffering a broken leg in 2020, Leary started all 12 games a year ago. Entering his third year under offensive coordinator Tim Beck, Leary is expected to lead N.C. State to new h eights. "I have a really good grasp of the system, and guys that we need to step up, kind of teaching them and making sure they understand what they need to do, and just in general having the whole offense understand from my perspective," Leary said at A CC Kickoff. "Just being in the system for a good amount of time and just keep collaborating with Coach Beck." Leary threw just five interceptions last season while passing for 3,433 yards. He was clutch when it mattered for the Pack, throwing 11 to uchdowns in the fourth quarter or overtime. Leary was the only quarterback in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with 10 or more touchdowns and one or no interceptions in the fourth quarter. He was just the third ACC quarterback in the playoff era to ac complish that feat. "He's one of the top quarterbacks in the country," N.C. State linebacker Isaiah Moore told The News & Observer. Studying quarterbacks and breaking down film comes naturally to N.C. State linebacker Drake Thomas. Being in front of the camera, sans helmet and shoulder pads, is admittedly outside of his comfort zone. But it was hard to tell when he and quarterback De vin Leary were on screen recently, appearing in a series of commercials for Bobbitt Construction in Raleigh. "It takes a little time to get adjusted," Thomas said. "I'd say the first time it was awkward. I'm not an actor obviously, but we went back to do some more videos and I was definitely a lot more comfortable. It was more natural."In three seasons, Thomas has made 192 tackles and was a first-team all-ACC performer in 2021. Last season Leary broke N.C. State's single-season record for passing touchdowns (35), while throwing just five interceptions. Their success on the field thrust them into the spotlight, and when Bobbitt Construction reached out to them about appearing on camera, they were ready. "We've never shot a video or acted before, so it's new to us," Leary said. "But it's funny to see Drake hop into a skit, like, this dude is our starting linebacker and he's doing a construction video." - Raleigh News Observer

The ACC revealed its new football scheduling model for the 2023-2026 seasons on Tuesday, featuring three primary opponents a school faces every year and rotating five additional teams every two years. The 3-5-5 approach will eliminate the conference's sp lit into Atlantic and Coastal divisions and thus end the long gaps that came from playing cross division foes. "It was clear this model is in the best interest of our student-athletes, programs and fans, at this time," ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in an official statement. "The future ACC football scheduling model provides significant enhancements for our schools and conference," Phillips said. "With the most important being our student-athletes having the opportunity to play every school both hom e and away over a four-year period."North Carolina's three primary opponents are teams it already faced every year in Duke, N.C. State and Virginia. The Blue Devils and Cavaliers are both Coastal foes and N.C. State was its permanent Atlantic game . The UNC-UVA game is the oldest football rivalry in the South dating back to 1892. N.C. State's primary opponents include Duke and Clemson. The Wolfpack had played Wake Forest annually every season since 1910 in a series that dates back to 1895. But by adding the Tigers as a primary partner, that run will come to an end in 2025. - Herald Sun

N.C. State launched a promotional campaign for quarterback Devin Leary on Monday, but don't call it a Heisman campaign for the returning junior. Not yet, at least. Leary is coming off a record-breaking year, during which he set a new N.C. State single-se ason mark for touchdown passes (35). He also threw for 3,433 yards, sixth all-time in Wolfpack history, and he was the ACC leader in touchdown passes against league competition with 27. He's one of the top returning quarterbacks in the ACC, and N.C. Stat e head coach Dave Doeren has gone on record saying he's the best quarterback in the country.Monday, the Wolfpack took steps to make sure everyone else had a chance to see what Leary has to offer, as well, launching the "D Leary Delivers" campaign, complete with website, social media presence and a highlight video. The site rolls out a list of accomplishments and highlights from Leary's career - so far - in Raleigh. But, don't say the 'H' word. "We expect his play this season will turn it into a H eisman campaign," N.C. State spokesperson Annabelle Myers said in a text to The News & Observer. "But for right now, (the site) is to promote a great player who we feel hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves." - Raleigh News Observer

Too often for No. 24 N.C. State, rival North Carolina has proven to be the thorn in its side - crashing the party in otherwise successful seasons or, more recently, outright embarrassing the Wolfpack in blowouts. Friday night was shaping up to be more of the same, with North Carolina up 30-21 late and playing spoiler as N.C. State looked to keep hopes of an ACC Atlantic Division title alive. Two touchdowns in 26 seconds kept those hopes alive a little longer. Devin Leary threw those two touchdown passes in that short span, with North Carolina State recovering an onside kick in between, to stun North Carolina 34-30.Leary found Emeka Emezie on a busted coverage for a 64-yard touchdown strike with 1:33 left. The Wolfpack recovered the onside kick, then Leary threw a 24-yard sideline pass to Emezie with 1:09 remaining. "What a football game," Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said. "What a game. That's why you play until the last second's off the clock." N.C. State (9-3, 6-2) beat North Carolina (6-6, 3-5 ) for the first time since 2018 to remain in contention for a trip to the conference championship game. It also officially eliminated six-time reigning league champion Clemson from the Atlantic Division race. The Wolfpack would reach the title game if No . 21 Wake Forest loses at Boston College on Saturday, creating a three-way tie atop the division that would favor N.C. State by virtue of its division record and head-to-head win over Clemson. Leary finished with 247 passing yards and four touchdowns. - N.C. State/AP College Football

Devin Leary threw for two touchdowns, Zonovan Knight returned a kickoff for a touchdown and No. 25 North Carolina State beat Syracuse 41-17 on Saturday to keep its hopes alive for an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. After neither team scored in th e first 22 minutes, the Wolfpack scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in a matter of less than 3 1/2 minutes. It was all part of N.C. State's 28-point burst in the last 6:14 of the first half.By the time the game began, N.C. Sta te (8-3, 5-2, No. 20 CFP) had retained a shot at reaching the ACC championship game because Atlantic Division-leading Wake Forest lost at Clemson. In order to go to Charlotte for the league title game Dec. 4, the Wolfpack must defeat North Carolina on Fr iday followed by a Wake Forest loss the next day at Boston College. Syracuse (5-6, 2-5), which was blown out a week earlier at Louisville, needs to beat Pittsburgh next week at home to secure bowl eligibility. Freshman running back Sean Tucker became Syr acuse's single-season rushing leader, passing Joe Morris with a second-quarter carry. Morris set the mark with 1,372 yards in 1979. Tucker, who entered the week second nationally in rushing, has 1,471 yards this year after posting 109 yards on 14 carries Saturday. Leary threw for 303 yards by completing 17 of 24 passes. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Dave Doeren can smile with pride, enjoying a season in which North Carolina State defeated Clemson and Florida State for the first time since he arrived in Raleigh, N.C., in 2013. Devin Leary threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns as the Wolfpack jumped ahead of Florida State early for a 28-14 win on Saturday. "I don't know how many times NC State has beaten Clemson and Florida State in the same year as a program," Doeren said. "But that happened this year and I think that's pretty good. When you look at those two programs, what they spend on football, their budgets, what they spend on their staffs, what we just did. I think it says a lot about what we're doing." Doeren's Wolfpack knocked off two of their biggest Atlantic Division rivals for the first time since 2002, before some of the current freshmen were born. N.C. State used the big play in the passing game against a Florida State team that was shorthanded due to flu-like symptoms.Leary connected with Trent Pennix, C.J. Riley, Christopher Toudle and Ricky Person on touchdowns - one in each quarter - for the Wolfpack (7-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Three of the touchdowns were big plays, with connections of 62 yards to Riley, 45 yards to Pennix and 43 yards to Person. "I feel like i t's a really special day," Pennix said. "We have a really special team. I had all the faith in my guys that we were going to pull out this win. We just went out and finished like we always do." McKenzie Milton filled in as Florida State's starting quarte rback with Jordan Travis not dressed out. Milton completed 22 of 44 passes for 233 yards and scrambled to complete an 8-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Helton, but the Seminoles (3-6, 2-4) were also plagued by drops from the start. - North Carolina State /AP College Football

Devin Leary threw three of his four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as North Carolina State's offense finally got untracked in a 28-13 win over Louisville on Saturday night. Leary hit Trent Pennix on a 29-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to push the Wolfpack into the lead. Leary connected with Devin Carter with 5:53 remaining as N.C. State stretched its edge to 21-13. The clinching points came on 10-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Riley with 2:21 to go. "Love the way we fi nished the game," N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said. "To be able to pad our lead was awesome down the stretch." N.C. State (6-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which finished with 44 yards on the ground, had only 189 yards of total offense through three quarters. "Credit to our defense, they played their tails off the entire game," Leary said. "We kind of rallied off that." Leary ended up 25-for-36 passing for 317 yards. "He's just playing smart," Doeren said of his quarterback. "There are times where he's trying to be a little too perfect, but he's gutsy." So it was largely defense that allowed the Wolfpack to bounce back from a one-point loss a week earlier at Miami. The outcome leaves N.C. State as the closest pursuer to undefeated Wake Forest in t he ACC's Atlantic Division. "It says a lot about our maturity," Wolfpack linebacker Drake Thomas said. "It takes a real strong, mature team to do what we just did." The Cardinals managed 55 yards on three fourth-quarter possessions. - North Carolina Stat e/AP College Football

Beating Clemson was tough enough for North Carolina State. Getting refocused for a nonconference game a week later was another challenge. "That was a monumental task," coach Dave Doeren said. "More than people probably understand." The No. 23 Wolfpack di d it just well enough. Devin Leary threw for two touchdowns and N.C. State held off Louisiana Tech 34-27 on Saturday night.Louisiana Tech picked up five first downs on its last possession, reaching the N.C. State 22-yard line before Jakeen Harris' interception in the end zone on the game's final play. "We did enough to win," Doeren said. "It's great, I guess, to not play great and to win a football game." N.C. State built on the upset of Clemson and improved to 4-1 for the second year in a row. " You could tell our energy wasn't there at the beginning of the game," running back Ricky Person Jr. said. "As it went on, we started to come together as a whole unit and push forward." Leary was 22 for 36 for 251 yards. Person (90 yards) and running back Zonovan Knight (85) each ran for a touchdown. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Clemson's final pass had barely hit the ground when North Carolina State's sideline began charging toward the field to celebrate, followed closely by red-clad Wolfpack fans pouring in to join them from all directions. The Wolfpack's long run of frustrati on in these marquee games is over. And the ninth-ranked Tigers' shot of returning to the College Football Playoff could be, too. N.C. State forced D.J. Uiagalelei into a fourth-down incompletion to seal a 27-21 win against the Tigers on Saturday. It's an outcome that shakes up the Atlantic Coast Conference race while also dealing a huge blow to the Tigers' playoff hopes in the long term behind yet another woeful offensive performance to start the year.N.C. State (3-1, 1-0 ACC) had lost eight stra ight and 15 of 16 meetings to the Tigers, which included at least one painfully close loss that fueled a bit of Murphy's Law-level pessimism - locals know it by an expletive-featuring nickname - among Wolfpack fans. No more, at least not for ninth-year c oach Dave Doeren after his first win against a top-10 team. "The curse is broken, N.C. State fans, finally," Doeren chuckled. "I've been here nine years and seen a lot of crazy stuff. And people have talked about it and didn't believe it. But I've got to tell you: I think it was real, and it's not there anymore. So we can move on now and be happy about that." Devin Leary threw for four touchdowns, including the winning 22-yard pass to Devin Carter - who made a twisting adjustment to the back-shoulder th row and got both knees down inside the back right corner of the end zone for the lead to start the second OT. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Devin Leary threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as North Carolina State geared up for a key Atlantic Coast Conference clash by beating Furman 45-7 on Saturday night. Zonovan Knight ran for 104 yards and a touchdown on 11 first-half carries for the Wolfpack (2-1), which braces for a visit from Clemson to open its league schedule next week. Leary completed 23 of 29 passes for 259 yards, all in the first half as the Wolfpack opened a 38-0 lead by halftime. "The rhythm was better," N.C. State coa ch Dave Doeren said. "There was a lot more plays where you could see 11 guys doing what they were supposed to do...It's good to get a rhythm. It's good to fix things we need to fix." It was a strong bounce-back performance for NC State after dropping a r oad decision to Mississippi State a week earlier. "I thought we responded well and that's what I was looking for," Doeren said. Knight scored on a 1-yard run to open the scoring, churning out 56 rushing yards of the 69 yards on the eight-play drive. Lear y's touchdown passes went to Dylan Parham for 4 yards, Anthony Smith for 42 yards and Thayer Thomas for 12 yards – all in the Wolfpack's 28-point second quarter. He also ran for a 7-yard scoring during the quarter. "It got away from us there in the sec ond quarter," Furman coach Clay Hendrix said. Devin Leary got North Carolina State off to a fast start with two first-quarter touchdown passes and the Wolfpack's defense forced four turnovers and blocked a punt in a 38-21 victory against Virginia on Saturday. Zonovan Knight ran for 101 yards and two scores, leading a balanced offense that picked up 179 yards on the ground and 184 through the air. Alim McNeill returned one of the interceptions 18 yards for a touchdown. Leary was 11 for 25 for 184 yards and one interception. Leary wasn't just throwing lasers, but he was getting rid of the ball quickly, spreading it around, keeping Pittsburgh at bay. It was the kind of command that Wolfpack fans expect at that position, alongside the likes of Phillip Rivers, Russell Wilson, M ike Glennon, Ryan Finley and Jacoby Brissett, all former N.C. State quarterbacks on NFL rosters. "He's always had it," Emezie said about Leary. It is the arm talent, but it's also the mental part of the game. Take the game-winning score for example. Emez ie said that wasn't even the play drawn up, but Leary saw something in the defense he liked, told the coaches and they went with it. "Coach having faith in him, him having faith in me," Emezie said. "That was just a blessing right there. He's so confiden t in himself, he's just a confident player." - Raleigh News Observer

N.C. state football coach Dave Doeren had to cut spring practice short last month when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down spring sports. Since then, he has spent most of his days on Zoom, meeting with coaches and players, checking up on their progress away from the Murphy Center as best he can. The lost practice time has been a blow for a Wolfpack team that went 4-8 last season and has welcomed five new assistant coaches this spring. N.C. State cycled through three quarterbacks in 2019 before settling on D evin Leary at the end of the season and without a spring camp to show otherwise, Doeren said the job is his to lose whenever fall begins. "Devin will be our starter," Doeren said. "I know he's excited about the opportunity to grow from where he was." Lea ry played in eight games last season, passing for 1, 219 yards and eight touchdowns. Bailey Hockman (546 yards, 1 TD) also saw action in seven games. Ben Finley, younger brother of former N.C. State quarterback Ryan Finley, enrolled early. "I was excited about the progress (Bailey) was making," Doeren said. "Then you have two young guys, Ben and Ty (Evans) who are just trying to learn the offense. Really, you have two guys who have played significant reps that we are counting on, and two young guys we w ant to see get better. I like where we're at, we just need the opportunity to coach them now." - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina State has hired Tim Beck as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, completing a revamp of Dave Doeren's coaching staff after a four-win season. Beck had spent the past three seasons as offensive coordinator at Texas, though he was d emoted from coordinator as part of a staff shakeup there after the regular-season finale and before the Longhorns' Alamo Bowl victory over Utah. He was quarterbacks coach for that game. Beck and Doeren coached together at Kansas in 2005, with Doeren sayi ng in a statement that he has known Beck for more than two decades. "He will take our offense and build it around the strengths of our personnel," Doeren said. "It will be versatile, aggressive, and player-friendly." Beck had also worked at Ohio State an d Nebraska in the past decade. Athletics spokesman Fred Demarest said Beck is set to make $700,000 annually for two years with the Wolfpack. - AP College Football
