 Jalen Knox, Mississippi, Player News

  07/01/21 - WR Jalen KnoxrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-0, 209 (DS#86 WR) + More +

Jalen Knox is leaving Missouri to board the Lane Train. The former starting wide receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal last month and has resurfaced at Ole Miss, appearing on the Rebels' roster Wednesday. Knox caught a career-high 31 passes for 305 yards last year and added 95 rushing yards as Eli Drinkwitz's starting slot receiver, moving inside after playing on the outside his first two years in the program.

Ole Miss Spirit, the 247Sports.com affiliate that covers the Rebels, reported that Knox won't be eligible in 2021 and must "overcome some academic hurdles" before he can play in Oxford. The site reported that Knox will enroll as a walk-on. A former Texas high school quarterback, Knox caught 77 passes for 1,031 yards and four touchdowns in three years at Mizzou - more catches than any returning player on MU's roster. - Post-Dispatch

Another former starter has left the Missouri football team and could enter the NCAA transfer portal. Wide receiver Jalen Knox, who had a career renaissance at a new position early last season, is no longer with the team, MU confirmed. Reached Tuesday by the Post-Dispatch, Knox declined to elaborate on his plans only saying that he hasn't made any decisions about his future. Knox saw his role expand last year when he moved to the slot position and finished with a career-best 31 catches for 305 yards, plus another 95 rushing yards on 12 attempts. He missed the final game of the season with a leg injury and didn't take part in spring practices while recovering from offseason surgery. In three years at Mizzou, Knox caught 77 passes for 1,031 yards and four scores. His 77 career receptions are more than any returning player on the current roster. - Post-Dispatch

  09/29/20 - WR Jalen KnoxrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-0, 209 (DS#86 WR) + More +

One bright spot for Missouri was junior wide receiver Jalen Knox. The 6-foot slot receiver, who finished with five catches for 63 yards, proved to be a safety blanket for starting quarterback Shawn Robinson - and Bazelak for one drive - in the first half. Knox had a small role in the offense last year under Dooley. He was sixth in receptions with 19 catches for 307 yards last season. Badie, out of the backfield, led the team in receptions last year with 32 catches. Knox may be the Missouri wideout to watch despite preseason buzz surrounding graduate transfers Hazelton and Chism. Hazelton led the team with nine targets. Chism had only one target in the first half and finished with two catches for 12 yards. "I thought (Knox) played well," Drinkwitz said. "We moved him all over the field. We moved him to the slot receiver. We had him out as a perimeter receiver. When we got the two grad transfer guys, that's what we knew we were going to do was move him inside and give us a little more flexibility in our offense to create some space." Knox said that he is "fast and more comfortable" in the slot instead of on the outside. He compared his constant motion to the role he had in high school. "That part of the game was easy," Knox said. "Getting to move around and be eye-candy to defenses and help other people get open...I love it." - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri's new wide receivers have attracted all the attention this offseason, but a returning wideout might be the most pivotal piece in the Tigers' new passing game. You can describe him as a newcomer, too. Jalen Knox, back for his third year in the program, is not the player he's been the last two seasons. That's by design. "I feel like J-Knox is going to blow back up this year," wideout Maurice Massey said after a recent practice. "With the offense we have now it puts everyone in the place they need to be and uses them the right way." If you interpreted that as a knock on the former offensive staff, your instincts were probably right.

"Wherever you put him he's gonna make plays," wideout Dominic Gicinto added. "He's just really dynamic. He's got speed. He can get in and out of cuts. He can catch the ball. He's going to be everywhere this year." With practices closed to reporters, Drinkwitz has been careful not to disclose too much about his offense through the first week of preseason camp. But he's not keeping his plans for Knox completely undercover. "He's got incredible speed, good hands (and) he really wants to be good," Drinkwitz said after Tuesday's practice. "We've got to do a better job offensively of getting him the ball in space. We're gonna have to be creative in finding ways for him to touch it." Earlier this summer Drinkwitz even suggested Knox might return to his days as an option quarterback in certain packages. "I definitely could," Knox said, "if I needed to." - Post-Dispatch
