Sam Hartman, Notre Dame, Player News

  02/22/23 - QB Sam HartmanrSr/2024, Notre Dame, 6-1, 211 (DS#13 QB) + More +

One of Gerad Parker's first orders of business as Notre Dame's newly promoted offensive coordinator has been to communicate his vision for Wake Forest transfer quarterback Sam Hartman and Gator Bowl MVP Tyler Buchner. "Sam and all of them, they're all critical because now you're not building relationships with eight guys in the tight end room," Parker said Monday after his promotion was formally announced at Notre Dame Stadium. "You're building relationships with the entire offensive unit." While Hartman enters as the FBS level's active leader in career passing yards and touchdown passes, Buchner offers dual-threat skills that helped him beat out Drew Pyne for the starting job last offseason.

With Pyne having transferred to Arizona State and four-star freshman Kenny Minchey on site as a midyear enrollee, Parker was asked how he could maximize the skills of Hartman and Buchner. "I think it's our job to know what their skills are and make them better, but not get away from something that maybe is not what fits them," Parker said. "It's going to be our job to tailor this thing around in a pro-style form, as coach Freeman said, but we're going to do what our players can do best and then find ways to enhance it." Hartman ran the Slow Mesh RPO at Wake Forest, so there will be some adjustment for him beyond just getting to know a roomful of new faces. Buchner, who missed 10 games last season after surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder, accounted for five touchdowns in the 45-38 Gator Bowl win over South Carolina. "There's certain differences in the two," Parker said. "It's our job to play off those differences of who it may be with Sam, and the same thing of Tyler just as we did in the bowl game. We want to do what our guys are good at and then get better at doing them." - South Bend Tribune

Sam Hartman is transferring to Notre Dame, giving the Fighting Irish a dynamic quarterback for coach Marcus Freeman's second season. Hartman, a three-year starter at Wake Forest, was widely regarded as the top quarterback in the transfer portal. He announced his decision Thursday by tweeting pictures of himself in a Notre Dame uniform. The 23-year-old Hartman holds the Atlantic Coast Conference record for passing touchdowns with 110. He has one year of eligibility remaining. He completed a career-best 63.1% of his passes this past season for 3,701 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, leading the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 record and a victory in the Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 23.

In 2021, Hartman threw for 4,228 yards and 39 touchdowns as Wake Forest went 11-3, finished 15th in the final AP poll and lost the ACC title game to Pitt. Hartman threw 16 TD passes for the Demon Deacons as a freshman in 2018, but was relegated to a backup role the following year, playing in four games and preserving a year of eligibility. He then got an extra year because of the pandemic. Notre Dame went 9-4 under Freeman, who took over as coach after Brian Kelly departed for LSU. The Fighting Irish began the season ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 but lost their first two games. They moved back into the rankings with a late five-game winning streak and are currently 19th. Notre Dame concluded its season with a 45-38 victory over No. 20 South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. - AP College Football

Sam Hartman completed 23 of 36 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns in what was expected to be his final game with Wake Forest, a 27-17 win over Missouri in the Gasparilla Bowl on Friday night. The redshirt junior now will look at entering the NFL draft or the transfer portal. Hartman threw his 108th career touchdown pass to set an Atlantic Coast Conference record on a 5-yard strike to Taylor Morin that made it 7-0 in the first quarter. He had been tied with Clemson’s Tajh Boyd (2010-13), and ended up with 110 overall. Hartman came up 33 yards short of joining North Carolina State’s Philip Rivers (13,484 from 2000-03) as the only quarterbacks in ACC history to reach 13,000 passing yards. A.T. Perry had 11 receptions for 116 yards for Wake Forest (8-5).

Brady Cook threw for 215 yards on 29-of-48 passing for Missouri (6-7). He also rushed for 38 yards on 14 tries. Missouri took its first lead, 17-14, when Cody Schrader scored from 4 yards out with 5:45 remaining in the third quarter. He finished with 54 yards on 13 carries. Wake Forest went ahead 20-17 just 1:16 later when Hartman hooked up with Jahmal Banks for a 48-yard touchdown. Matthew Dennis missed the extra point, which ended the Demon Deacons' streak of 269 consecutive successful tries, dating to Nov. 18, 2017. Hartman and Morin hooked up for a 16-yard touchdown with 2 1/2 minutes to play. Justice Ellison put the Demon Deacons ahead 14-3 on a 1-yard TD run five minutes into the second quarter. He had 64 yards on 21 attempts. After Jaylon Carlies picked off a pass by Hartman in the end zone, Cook connected on a 1-yard touchdown pass to Demariyon Houston to get Missouri within 14-10 2 1/2 minutes before halftime. Harrison Mevis made a 35-yard field goal to cut the Missouri deficit to 7-3 late in the first quarter. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

The record-setting passer could very well be playing his final game for Wake Forest. He hasn't entered the NCAA transfer portal or announced plans to enter the NFL draft, but there's been so much chatter about Hartman moving on, Clawson has addressed the possibility that Hartman is making his final appearance Friday. "Whatever decisions Sam makes, we support him," Clawson said earlier this month. "When the bowl game is over, if there's some incredible offer for him to go to another school and get life-changing money, how can we fault him for that?" The senior comes into Friday's game with 107 career passing touchdowns, tied for the most in ACC history with former Clemson QB Tajh Boyd. Consider the legends behind him on that list: Phillip Rivers, Trevor Lawrence, Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Chris Weinke, Russell Wilson. This season, Hartman's thrown for 35 touchdowns and 3,421 yards in 11 games with a passer rating of 160.2, best in the ACC and seventh among all Power Five quarterbacks. - Post-Dispatch

2022 BRIAN PICCOLO AWARD WINNER: Wake Forest redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman has been named the recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference's 2022 Brian Piccolo Award, the league announced on Monday. The Piccolo Award has been given annually since 1970 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the "most courageous" football player in the ACC. As a standout running back at Wake Forest, Piccolo was the ACC Athlete of the Year in 1965 and played for the Chicago Bears before his career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer. His courageous fight against the disease was an inspiration to the Bears and the entire football community.

Hartman had serious doubts in early August that he would ever play football again, let alone be allowed to take the field for the 2022 season. Diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome (effort thrombosis) - a rare blood clot in the subclavian vein - the Charlotte, North Carolina native was immediately restricted from football-related activities. He underwent a procedure to remove the blood clot and subsequent surgery to eliminate the pressure on the affected vein. With a rehab effort led by Dr. Julie A. Freischlag, a renowned vascular surgeon and one of the world's leading experts in Paget-Schroetter syndrome, Hartman defied all odds by returning to the practice field in less than a month. Freischlag, the CEO/Chief Academic Officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, teamed with Dr. Matthew Goldman, Niles Fleet and the entire Wake medical sports and performance staff to enhance Hartman's remarkable recovery. - ACC Football

Sam Hartman threw four touchdown passes in the final home game of a record-setting career in Wake Forest's 45-35 win over Syracuse on Saturday night. Three of those scoring strikes went to A.T. Perry and the Demon Deacons snapped a three-game losing streak. After trailing 21-10, the Demon Deacons (7-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) rattled off the next 35 points. The scoring spree was punctuated by Brendon Harris' 36-yard interception return for a touchdown. Hartman was 30-for-43 for 331 yards. With 104 career touchdown throws, he's three away from former Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd's ACC record of 107. Syracuse (6-5, 3-4) has lost five games in a row since a torrid start that put the Orange in the national rankings. Sean Tucker ran for two touchdowns and 106 yards on 16 carries and LeQuint Allen threw for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. Garrett Shrader was 17 of 31 for 324 yards, a touchdown and an interception, Hartman connected with Perry for three first-half touchdown plays, including a 10-yarder to take the lead 12 seconds before the break.

Perry, who caught 10 balls for 119 yards, became the all-time Wake Forest leader for touchdown receptions with 27. The sequence late in the first half marked a rapid turnaround. Two sacks pushed Syracuse from inside the 10-yard line and resulted in a long field goal attempt falling short. Wake Forest responded for the go-ahead touchdown and never trailed again. Tucker had a 9-yard scoring run for the game's first points and added a go-ahead 2-yard run in the second quarter. Hartman's 12-yard pass to Perry in the back corner of the end zone gave Wake Forest its first touchdown. Syracuse used a trick play when Allen, a running back threw a 33-yard pass to Devaughn Cooper as the Orange built a 21-10 lead. Tucker eclipsed the 3,000-yard rushing mark for his career. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

It's been more than a decade since a Football Bowl Subdivision team turned over the ball as many times in a 15-minute span as Wake Forest did against Louisville. The Demon Deacons' six turnovers in the third quarter of its 48-21 loss Saturday were the most in a quarter since Oklahoma State committed six in the fourth in a 21-7 Cotton Bowl loss to Mississippi on Jan. 3, 2010. Sam Hartman was responsible for all six of Wake Forest's third-quarter turnovers, fumbling three times and throwing three interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Before Saturday, no player had turned over the ball more than four times in a quarter since at least 2015, according to Sportradar. Hartman was the second player this season to commit six turnovers in a game. Utah State's Logan Bonner did it against UNLV on Sept. 24. The Deacons finished the game with eight turnovers, tying the national season high Miami set the week before against Duke. - AP College Football

Sam Hartman threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead No. 13 Wake Forest past Boston College 43-15 on Saturday. The Demon Deacons (6-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) looked crisp in their third consecutive victory. All of Hartman's touchdown throws - including two to both Taylor Morin and Jahmal Banks - were to receivers already in the end zone. He completed 25 of 40 passes for 313 yards. Hartman's 2-yard run gave Wake Forest its fifth touchdown and he added a two-point conversion pass in the final minute of the third quarter. Phil Jurkovec threw for a touchdown and ran for another for Boston College (2-5, 1-4), which hasn't defeated a Top 25 opponent since 2018. The Eagles fell to No. 5 Clemson two weeks ago.

Boston College's Zay Flowers caught 10 passes for 135 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown catch. Jurkovec was 20-for-38 passing for 221 yards. Hartman threw scoring passes of 12 yards to Banks in the first quarter and 12 yards to Morin and 13 yards to A.T. Perry in the second quarter. Morin caught a 4-yard toss in the third quarter and Banks clutched a 16-yard pass despite pass interference in the fourth quarter. Hartman and Jurkovec head had 174 yards passing in the first half.   Sam Hartman threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns, Justice Ellison ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and No. 22 Wake Forest beat No. 23 Florida State 31-21 on Saturday. Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) ran for 171 yards and bounced back from its double-overtime loss to No. 5 Clemson. Hartman connected with eight receivers, with A.T. Perry leading the way with eight receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Demon Deacons also converted 7 of 11 third downs and 2 of 2 fourth downs as they took a 21-7 lead at the half.

Jordan Travis connected with Mycah Pittman on touchdown receptions of 18 and six yards as the Seminoles opened both halves with TD drives. Travis completed 23 of 35 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. The Seminoles (4-1, 2-1) got within 28-21 with a 58-yard drive in the fourth quarter, which culminated in Travis’ 4-yard TD throw to Johnny Wilson and a two-point pass. But the Demon Deacons responded again with a long drive, ending in Matthew Dennis' 27-yard field goal to give them a 31-21 lead with 2:55 left. An Oregon transfer, Pittman had career bests with five receptions and 90 yards. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Liberty scored with about a minute left but No. 19 Wake Forest stopped CJ Yarbrough's two-point conversion attempt several yards short of the goal line for a tight 37-36 home win Saturday. The Demon Deacons' ground game was ineffective - 21 yards on 26 attempts - so they turned to defense and a passing game, with quarterback Sam Hartman throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Wake Forest remains unbeaten at 3-0. Liberty (2-1) had pulled within a single point on that late 18-yard, fourth-down touchdown grab by Demario Douglas, who jumped high and took the ball away from two Wake defenders in the end zone.

The second half turned out to be a shootout, pitting Hartman against elusive Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter, a former Tennessee recruit. But Matthew Dennis made the extra point after a 1-yard touchdown run from Justice Ellison with 3:39 left. The Deacons made three first-half interceptions en route to a 20-8 halftime lead, despite gaining only one yard on offense and yielding a safety on a blocked punt. The Flames took their first lead on a 43-yard run Dae Dae Hunter, who escaped the grasp of one defender and raced down the middle of the field. A two-point pass put Liberty in front 23-20 less than five minutes into the second half. Salter ran for 77 yards and one TD and passed for 192 with two TDs, often scrambling to wait for open receivers. - Liberty/AP College Football

Sam Hartman passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 23 Wake Forest beat Vanderbilt 45-25 on Saturday. Hartman connected on 18 of 27 passes after he missed Wake Forest's opener against VMI because of a blood clot. The fifth-year quarterback directed the Demon Deacons to 11 wins and a trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game last season. Hartman's 68-yard touchdown pass to A.T.

Perry lifted Wake Forest (2-0) to a 14-3 lead with 36 seconds left in the first quarter. He found Christian Turner for a 2-yarder early in the second quarter, and then threw second-half touchdown passes to Taylor Morin and Cameron Hite. A.J. Swann passed for two touchdowns for Vanderbilt in relief of Mike Wright. Swann also ran for a 2-point conversion. Re'Mahn Davis had 18 carries for 87 yards for the Commodores (2-1), including a 2-yarder with 11:06 left in the first half that trimmed Wake Forest's lead to 21-10. The Demon Deacons went ahead to stay when Wright threw a pass to the left under pressure that was intercepted by Coby Davis and returned 31 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has been medically cleared to play in the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons' trip to Vanderbilt this weekend after receiving treatment for a blood clot. The school announced Hartman's return Tuesday, roughly a month since announcing he would be out indefinitely due to what it described at the time only as a non-football medical issue. Tuesday's statement included details on Hartman's condition, treatment and recovery.

Hartman, now in his fifth year, was ranked as one of the nation's top quarterbacks last season for a team that reached the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. “There will be time for me to tell my complete story," Hartman said in a statement, "but right now I am just really excited to get back on the field with my teammates and compete each day to help our team get ready for Vanderbilt this Saturday in Nashville." In a statement, Julie A. Freischlag, the dean of the Wake Forest's medical school and a vascular surgeon, said Hartman developed the clot in the subclavian vein, located near the collarbone. It's known as Paget-Schroetter syndrome, or "effort thrombosis," and Freischlag said doctors believe it was caused by a previous infection that eventually led to inflammation. Hartman had a procedure Aug. 9 to remove the clot, as well as surgery to eliminate pressure in the vein and dilate it. - AP College Football

"Definitely somber last night, but seeing him out here today, out of surgery and everything, that's reassuring," tight end Blake Whiteheart, a Mount Tabor alumnus, said after practice Wednesday. "We got after it today. Whenever we see him, he motivates us. Even without him, we've got to keep pushing expectations. They haven't changed at all. He's a big part of our team, but he's going to be here on the sidelines cheering us on." Offensive lineman Sean Maginn also found relief in seeing Hartman at practice. "It was exciting seeing him," Maginn said. "Obviously, we didn't get much information last night. It's human instinct to worry about him, and just to see him out here, smiling, talking to us, and he just reassured everyone that he's going to be OK. His safety is No. 1. He seems in good spirits. We're going to be around him, love on him and just lift him up and remind him that we're here for him."

Hartman received a medical evaluation Tuesday at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. What the condition is or how long Hartman could be out are not clear. "We expect him to be back," Clawson said after practice Wednesday. "It's too early to tell what that timeline is...We expect him to be back, and as it goes along we'll get a better idea. Completely un-football-related..."He's out here today, and he's good...He just wanted those guys to see him and know that he was OK." Hartman's absence elevates Mitch Griffis, a redshirt freshman but one who is entering his third season, to the No. 1 role, with Michael Kern behind him. The Demon Deacons, ranked 19th nationally in the American Football Coaches Association preseason poll, will open their season at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1 against VMI at Truist Field. "We have a lot of confidence in all of our quarterbacks," Clawson said. "They're ready to play, and they're ready to win." Hartman's message to his team, Clawson said, was "'Keep going.' He'll be back; he doesn't know when." - Winston Salem Journal

Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman will miss "an extended period of time" for treatment of what the school described Wednesday as medical condition unrelated to football. In a statement, the school said Hartman sought medical attention Tuesday following a workout. He will miss team activities indefinitely and it's unclear when he might be able to return to competition. The school cited privacy laws in not revealing specifics of Hartman's condition.

The fifth-year junior was one of the top passers in the Bowl Subdivision ranks last year and helped the Demon Deacons reach the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game while tying a program record with 11 wins. In a statement, Hartman called Tuesday "a frustrating day." "I look forward to attacking this rehabilitation process and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates and coaches," he said. Hartman ranked 11th in the FBS ranks in passing yardage (302.0 per game) and tied for fifth with 39 touchdowns last season at the helm of the nation's No. 4 scoring attack (41.0). That helped Wake Forest crack the top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll last season and win the ACC's Atlantic Division title. - AP College Football

Redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman, one of the nation's top returning players, is out indefinitely following a medical evaluation that took place on Tuesday afternoon at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Statement from Wake Forest Athletics: "Following a workout on Tuesday, Aug. 9, redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman sought medical attention for a non-football related condition. The results of those tests and subsequent treatment will remove Sam from team activities indefinitely. The timeline for his return to competition is uncertain. In respect for Sam's privacy and in compliance with HIPAA, no additional details will be shared at this time. Wake Forest Athletics medical and athletics training staff are providing Sam and his family with constant support. More updates will be shared when appropriate." - Wake Forest Football

Wake Forest, coming of its best season under Coach Dave Clawson when it went 11-3, was predicted to finish third in the ACC's Atlantic Division in a preseason media poll. The poll was conducted by 164 journalists at the ACC kickoff last week in Charlotte. The Demon Deacons, who won the Atlantic Division but lost to Pittsburgh in the ACC championship game, are predicted to finish behind Clemson and N.C. State in the division.

Clemson, which was picked to win the conference for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, had 111 first-place votes with N.C. State 44 and Wake Forest managed six first-place votes. The Tigers recorded their 11th consecutive double-digit win season with a 10-3 finish in 2021. Miami was picked to finish atop the Coastal Division following a 7-5 season that included wins in five of its final six games. The defending ACC champion Panthers were picked second followed by North Carolina in third. - Winston Salem Journal

"Hartman for The Heisman." It's got a nice ring to it, as quarterback Sam Hartman enters what will likely be his final season at Wake Forest. As the summer heats up, the preseason predictions are starting to come out. One recent publication had Hartman's odds for winning the coveted award; he was listed by DraftKings Sportsbook in the top 15 for favorites to win the award. Also, SouthernPickskin.com is touting Hartman as a candidate. The top five picks to win the Heisman, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, are quarterback C.J. Stroud (Ohio State), quarterback Bryce Young (Alabama), quarterback Caleb Williams (Southern Cal), running back Bijan Robinson (Texas) and quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson).

The Demon Deacons and the Tigers play on Sept. 24 in a key ACC game at Truist Field. Last season, Hartman accounted for 50 touchdowns (39 passing and 11 rushing) as the Deacons went 11-3 and won the ACC's Atlantic Division. He passed for just over 4,000 yards and had one of the best seasons by a quarterback in school history. His 50 total touchdowns were one less than Lamar Jackson of Louisville had in 2016 when Jackson won the Heisman. Jackson's 51 total touchdowns are the best in a season in ACC history. - Winston Salem Journal

Wake Forest is coming off its best season (11-3) since 2006, with the Demon Deacons claiming their second divisional crown and a spot in the ACC Championship. It was a stunning turnaround for a program one year removed from a 4-5 season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of the offseason attention in the ACC is sure to focus on Clemson, Miami and N.C. State, it's hard to ignore a Wake team that returns 17 starters from last season, led by quarterback Sam Hartman, who enters the 2022 campaign just 497 yards shy of becoming the program's all-time passing leader. The defense returns a plethora of experience up front, including defensive lineman Rondell Bothroyd (8 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss). Another divisional crown could be in the mix again. - Orlando Sentinel

Sam Hartman's big day capped Wake Forest's best season in 15 years. Hartman tossed three touchdown passes, two of them to tight end Brandon Chapman, and the No. 17 Demon Deacons beat Rutgers 38-10 in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Friday to reach 11 wins for the second time in program history. Hartman completed 23 of 39 passes for 304 yards. He added 21 more yards rushing and pushed his touchdown total to 50 this season -- 39 passing and 11 rushing. He was named the winning team's most valuable player. "It's everything," Hartman said. "I'm just enjoying the moment." The Demon Deacons (11-3) controlled the game from the start, scoring on their first three drives and opening a double-digit lead just before halftime. It played out about as expected given Rutgers (5-8) was a late replacement for No. 25 Texas A&M. The Aggies pulled out because of a lack of available players due to injuries, opt-outs, transfers and COVID-19 issues. The NCAA gave Rutgers the first shot at filling the void because it had the highest Academic Progress Rate score of all the eligible 5-7 teams. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

No. 21 Wake Forest earned a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game, getting three passing touchdowns and one more on the ground from Sam Hartman to beat Boston College 41-10 on Saturday. The Demon Deacons (10-2, 7-1 ACC) will attempt to claim their first league title since 2006 when they face No. 20 Pittsburgh on Dec. 4. Hartman ran it in from 7 yards out midway through the first quarter and made it 14-0 on a 33-yard pass to A.T. Perry. It was 17-10 late in the second when Brandon Sebastian intercepted Hartman in the end zone, but BC went three-and out and then Wake Forest scored on Hartman's 7-yard pass to Perry just before halftime.

BC (6-6, 2-6) ran off three straight three-and-outs - along with an interception - to start the third quarter, while Wake Forest extended its lead with a field goal and a 3-yard run by Christian Turner that made it 34-10. Hartman completed 20 of 32 passes for 236 yards and ran 11 times for 51 yards. Perry caught four passes for 81 yards and two scores. Phil Jurkovec was 3 for 11 passing for 19 yards for one touchdown and two interceptions, but he also led the Eagles with 66 yards rushing. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

The off-target throws, drops and mistakes kept coming for No. 13 Wake Forest. So did the injuries - all on a night when the Demon Deacons were trying to take a huge step toward winning their Atlantic Coast Conference division. All that trouble merely ended up as the perfect setup for another memorable moment in a special season. Sam Hartman accounted for four touchdowns while Justice Ellison ran for a short score with 1:47 left to help Wake Forest beat No. 21 North Carolina State 45-42 on Saturday night, moving within a victory of wrapping up the league's Atlantic Division race. "It's fun to play in games like this," Clawson said. "It's even more fun to win them." The next step for the Demon Deacons (9-1, 6-0 ACC) is to finish off the division race and supplant Clemson, which had won the Atlantic on the way to winning the past six league championships. To do so, Wake Forest must win one of their last two games to secure the division winner's ticket to the ACC championship game.

Fittingly, in a matchup of the division's top two teams, the Demon Deacons had to grind to the final minute to hold off the Wolfpack (7-3, 4-2) and quarterback Devin Leary. The night ended with Wake Forest fans joining the team on the field after the home finale in a celebration that lingered so long that the public-address announcer had to twice instruct the Demon Deacons players to head to the locker room. Ellison's 4-yard score pushed Wake Forest to a 45-35 lead, though N.C. State responded with a clutch drive that ended with Leary's 8-yard touchdown pass to Devin Carter with 45 seconds left. The Wolfpack nearly recovered the onside kick, with Ricky Person Jr. grabbing the bouncing ball about a yard shy of the 10-yard requirement to secure the possession. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Wake Forest's offense has spent the past two weeks moving briskly up and down the field. The good news is the defense came along for the ride with a strong performance of its own after a rough few weeks. And that has carried these 13th-ranked Demon Deacons to the best start in program history. Sam Hartman continued his recent tear by accounting for five touchdowns to help Wake Forest beat Duke 45-7 on Saturday, keeping them and in the mix for bigger goals - think an Atlantic Coast Conference championship and being in the College Football Playoff race - than have typically been seen around these parts. "It's just guys play for each other, not playing for themselves," Hartman said. "That's going to be the biggest challenge. You get the accolades, you get the awards ... and it's: can we keep playing for each other and not play for ourselves? "It's enjoyable though. The success, we've earned this success. But nothing's going to be given for the rest of the year and we're going to have to keep showing up and keep being consistent." Hartman threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns, including a 38-yarder to Jaquarii Roberson on the first possession. He also ran for 61 yards and two scores for the Demon Deacons (8-0, 5-0).

It came a week after Hartman threw for five touchdowns and ran for a sixth score in a 70-56 victory over Army. That tied this year's team for the best start in program history set in 1944, nine years before the formation of the ACC. Now Dave Clawson's bunch owns a new milestone in what is becoming a special season for the league-leading Demon Deacons - a group using the motto of going from "good to great." Christian Beal-Smith, Ke'Shawn Williams and Taylor Morin also had touchdowns for Wake Forest, which finished with 677 total yards. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

When it was over, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson used one word to describe it: "Wow!" Sam Hartman threw for a career-high 458 yards and five touchdowns in a big-play display and ran for another score, and No. 16 Wake Forest defeated Army 70-56 on Saturday to remain unbeaten in front of a sellout crowd at Michie Stadium. "It felt like whoever had the ball last was going to win," Clawson said. "That was about as clean a performance as I've ever seen. Every time we had to make a play we made a play. We found a way to win." Army (4-3), which lost its third straight and had its 13-game winning streak at Michie Stadium snapped, had not defeated a ranked opponent since a 17-14 victory over Air Force in 1972. Still, the Black Knights made Wake Forest (7-0) earn this one, matching them on the scoreboard until a costly turnover.

Hartman was unstoppable and rarely pressured, completing 23 of 29 passes and hitting touchdown passes of 41, 54 and two of 75 yards as he matched the Michie Stadium record for scoring passes. Jaquarii Roberson had eight catches for 157 yards and three touchdowns and A.T. Perry had six catches for 146 yards and one score. Army never led, and a costly interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter gave the Demon Deacons the breathing room they needed. "Guys made plays and you make the throws and it works like that," Hartman said. "That's how this offense is supposed to do." - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Nick Sciba kicked a 29-yard field goal with 22 seconds left and No. 24 Wake Forest beat Louisville 37-34 on Saturday to remain unbeaten. Sam Hartman threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense for the Demon Deacons (5-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who got a huge boost late from Justice Ellison with several patient and chain-moving runs on the go-ahead drive.

Louisville (3-2, 1-1) got a final drive with a chance to tie and no timeouts, but the Cardinals' desperate, lateral-filled play never got across midfield before Wake Forest's Rondell Bothroyd recovered the loose ball to end this one after time had expired. Malik Cunningham had a big day for the Cardinals, throwing for two scores while running for two additional TDs. His biggest throw of the day came when he hit Tyler Harrell over the middle in a frenetic final few minutes, and Harrell pulled away down the left sideline from four black jerseys in pursuit for a 75-yard touchdown that tied the game at 34 with 3:01 left. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Sam Hartman threw three touchdown passes and Wake Forest scored on its first seven possessions in a 37-17 victory against Virginia on Friday night. The Demon Deacons (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their fifth in a row against the Cavaliers as Hartman connected on scoring throws of 39 yards to Taylor Morin and 12 yards each to Blake Whiteheart and A.T. Perry. The Cavaliers (2-2, 0-2) nearly failed for the second week in a row to force a punt, following a 59-39 loss to No. 21 North Carolina in which they allowed 699 yards by allowing 473 to the Demon Deacons, many coming on big plays. Wake Forest finally kicked the ball away with a 37-17 lead and 8:36 to go. The Demon Deacons drove 75 yards in the opening 2:41 with Hartman finding Morin all by himself for a 39-yard touchdown. Virginia drove to the Demon Deacons' 4 yard-line with a first-and-goal, but Brennan Armstrong lost two yards, Mike Hollins gained a yard and Armstrong threw incomplete on third and fourth down. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Sam Hartman threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and A.T. Perry grabbed seven passes for 155 yards and a TD as Wake Forest cruised past mistake-plagued Florida State 35-14 Saturday afternoon. Wake Forest (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) rolled up 484 yards - 332 in the first half - of total offense, including 225 on the ground. Florida State (0-3, 0-1), which juggled McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis at quarterback, committed six turnovers, but stayed within striking range in the first half thanks to a 65-yard deep strike from Travis to a wide-open Ontaria Wilson. "The offensive line did an incredible job," Hartman said. Hartman hit Perry in stride with a deep strike down the right side for a 49-yard TD to start the onslaught.

The Deacons scored their next two touchdowns after roughing-the-kicker and unnecessary-roughness penalties extended drives. "No way did we ever give ourselves a chance to play winning football," Florida State coach Mike Norvell said. "We continue to see the mistakes that cost us in the previous weeks." Leading by 21 points late in the third quarter, Wake Forest wiped out any realistic Florida State hopes by stopping Milton short of a first down on a fourth-and-2 run from the Deacons' 11. Early in the scoreless fourth quarter, Milton fumbled the ball into the Wake Forest end zone while stretching for the goal line. The ball slipped in and out of the hands of players on both teams before it was recovered by Deacons defensive end Luiji Vilain for a touchback. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Sam Hartman passed for 244 yards and a touchdown, Christian Turner rushed for two scores and Wake Forest beat Norfolk State 41-16 on Saturday. Wake Forest scored 20 straight points, spanning halftime, to take control. Coach Dave Clawson had talked earlier this week about wanting to see better offensive execution after an "uneven" performance in the season-opening win against Old Dominion. He largely got what he was looking for Saturday, as the Demon Deacons ran for 161 yards and had 413 total yards while dipping into their depth chart against the Championship Subdivision opponent. "When you play these games and you have a physical advantage, you want to be efficient and you want to make explosive plays," Clawson said. "It's really hard to find any fault with what we did on offense other than when you put the 2s and the 3s in, you don't want it to drop off as much as it did." Jaquarii Roberson had four catches for 97 yards for the Demon Deacons (2-0), including when he ran past the defense for Hartman's deep ball for a 64-yard score on the first play of the second half. That marked his sixth straight game with a touchdown reception. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Quarterback Sam Hartman is replacing Newman and is a player the Tigers are familiar with. The Charlotte native started nine games as a true freshman in 2018, including against Clemson. Hartman has played in 13 games so far in his career. He has completed 56 percent of his passes for 2,814 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. - The State

The spring was going to be the time for Sam Hartman to show how much more of a leader he's become since starting nine games as a true freshman in 2018. Wake Forest's quarterback is still doing that - just with some obviously different circumstances because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We've been pushing with a lot of the guys, we've got a lot of group chats, we do Zoom calls, we just do a lot of checking on each other," Hartman said. "I've really just been telling the guys that no matter what's happening, you've gotta keep in mind that the season is still on and there's going to be a game played at some point, even though we don't know when. "So there's always that goal in mind, so we just keep working and you're not just training just to train." Wake Forest completed five spring practices in February and early March before spring break. While the Deacons were away that week, the domino of postponements and cancelations because of the outbreak eventually meant spring football wouldn't be resumed. So the Deacons' one-third of a spring practice slate became all of the work they'd be able to do together until further notice. In those two weeks, though, Coach Dave Clawson liked what he saw from Hartman - in more aspects than one. - Winston Salem Journal
